Bad Quality Raw Dog Food & Terrible Customer Service
I have been using Durham Animal Feeds (DAF) for raw dog food for 2 years and although there were some differences in the quality of the batches I would receive, I never had any major issues until my last delivery. I received one lot of food that was basically just blood and smelt foul, and another lot that was really high in bone content and nearly caused my dog a prolapsed colon.
I bought 3 boxes (14x 454g in each) in 3 different flavours. The Meaty Mince smelt absolutely foul and looked like soup - it was all blood and just mush, my dog wouldn't eat it when previously he has lapped up this flavour. The Duck & Pumpkin looked extremely dry and had such high bone content it nearly gave my dog a prolapsed colon, he was yelping in pain trying to pass the stool for 5-10 minutes and his colon was extended out of his body by around 2 inches. Eventually when he managed to pass the stool, it was rock hard - and I am not exaggerating. His bottom was extremely bloody afterwards.
I reached out DAF and explained about the issues and provided photos. I have never made any sort of complaint to them before. They weren't willing to give me a refund or discount on a future order, and instead insisting all they could do was collect 2 samples of the food to be checked over; but I would have to wait a week for them to collect it and then they wouldn't give a timeframe on how long it would take them to assess the samples or how likely it would be I would get any sort of refund (it was clear there were issues with the food from the photos I provided). I said I needed the freezer space to buy alternative food for my dog so could they take all of it back, but they wouldn't take it all and it seemed highly unlikely they were going to refund me anything at all.
I am really disappointed in their customer service after being a customer for 2 years. The quality of this delivery was appalling and I really would recommend dog owners avoid using them.
Do not use, life threatening bone content
My own fault for using a cheap brand as its all I could afford, my dog was severely constipated for 15 days, vets tried other methods before the emergency enema, compacted bone had blocked her intestine, A further five days and she passed the last of it herself. £2500 later, luckily i had insurance but cheap dosent pay .You should be ashamed of yourselves , selling this to naive customers. She could have died, and i bet some poor dogs have died.. never again
Bought from this company for years
Bought from this company for years. Sadly there beef mince is full of sharp shards of bone, seems a common thing with DAF. Sadly when you mail them about it you get, basically, piss off we don't care type of attitude. Come on DAF all feedback about bones can't be wrong, and I would be nice if you're replys were nice and polite for a change. But I guess it's the state of the country nowerdays nobody gives a F--K.
Ridiculous customer service
After using DAF for sone time, they sent a DELIVERED text for a large ish order (50+) yet nothing was delivered. When we queried it, they refused to send a photo, refused to refund the £50odd and offered a discount on next order.
Needless to say, we never used them ever again.
To be fair, it's pretty low grade dog food anyway. We're very happy with our new dog food service so probably did us a favour. Worth £50 to never deal with them again.
Our dog ill within 1 week of use.
WARNING DO NOT USE, we were on a raw food diet using another brand meet and due to financial struggles we decided to change to Durham to save a few pounds. What a bad mistake, within a few days our poor dog was constantly struggling to poo and his wee had turned almost brown. Dehydrated, constipated and over all a completely unhappy dog who when he managed to go to the loo struggled and clearly felt pain. The meat is very dry and full of bone. Compared to the other brand we used it is obviously poor quality. I have now chucked a bulk buy of Durham in the bin knowing if it is in our bin it cant harm another. Out of pocket but happy to see my boy back to normal by just changing his food back to the other brand. DO NOT BUY WARNING this company needs to be shut down to protect our family pets.
Durham Animal Feeds made my dog violently sick! Avoid at all costs!
Durham Animal Feeds made my dog violently sick 3 times â excessive bone, vomiting, avoid DAF raw food
at all costs.
Durham Animal Feeds (DAF) has made my raw-fed dog violently sick THREE times in 18 months â projectile vomiting bone fragments, shaking, unable to keep water down for 24+ hours.
Product: Durham Animal Feeds Chicken & Tripe / Beef & Tripe (batch numbers already given to DAF).
Every single time the mince was 60â70% coarse bone and sharp shards despite Durham Animal Feeds claiming only â10% boneâ on their website.
Called Durham Animal Feeds customer service â they only asked for batch number, no apology, no follow-up. Once the phone was put down on me.
Avoid Durham Animal Feeds (DAF raw dog food) at all costs unless you want your dog to play Russian roulette with violent vomiting and potential blockages.
Hundreds of identical Durham Animal Feeds bad reviews in 2024â2025 for the exact same reason.
Crime Reference Supplied But Still No Refund
Ordered over £70 worth of food. No communication as to time slot of delivery. Food was left in pouring rain on a public road leading to a park before 7am. Only discovered it had been left when I checked an email to say delivered. When when to collect it, it had gone. Crime reference number supplied but still no idea when I am being refunded. Customer service non existent, just made to feel it was my mistake as I didn't read the email I never got and they feel its quite acceptable to leave in a public place. If I have not heard anything by end of week (promised a phone call today which never happened) I WILL be going to small claims court
Contains large and sharp bone fragments
Away from home and couldn't get our regular food. Pet shop recommended this saying they sold literally tons of it weekly. It's great value and meat content looks good but very large bone fragments in Beef based variety.
Our large dog no stranger to bones but clearly unhappy after a meal and soon after vomited whole lot up.
Opened another packet and checked carefully to find many large and some very sharp pointed bone fragments. Noted similar but old reviews so wanted to update with my recent experience.
May be different with other varieties but I feel the bone is not sufficiently broken/ground down in the beef and tripe mince.
Have taken a picture but can't upload.
Gone downhill
I used DAF years ago, never had any issues back then.
They recently opened up a premises in my town, so I thought I'd get a few minces from them, to see if they were still decent.
My dog ended up getting quite ill. Bear in mind, this is a 9 year old dog that has never been ill in her life and has eaten raw, of many brands and types, since she was a puppy.
She was vomiting brown stuff, and foam/bile or bits of bone several times a day, and her poo all turned black and tarry, or else bloody. She was lethargic. I ended up taking her to the overnight vet because I was so worried about her. He said she 'probably' just had a gastro bug. At the time, I thought this too. You don't immediately assume its the food when its a company you've previously used without issue.
I fed her bland home made meals for a couple of days and she picked up.
When put back on DAF mince? She went right downhill again. This was when I started wondering if it was the food, as it was the only thing I'd changed.
I was honestly open to it being just a bug, and a coincidence - correlation doesn't equal causation - but when I came here and read *so many reviews* of other people's dogs being ill on this mince, all having the same experience as me......I have to say its hard to not believe my dog was another victim of this. Its happening too often for it to not point to a real problem here.
Since going back to my usual raw supplier, my dog is 100% again, playing like a puppy. Its really making me realise how bad this food was making her feel for the time she was on it.
The minces were poor quality too. Even if they don't make your dog sick, I wouldn't recommend them; they're SO watery, the consistency of reddy brek! And they leaked so much stuff, something my good quality minces do minimally, if at all. Some of them didn't smell the freshest upon defrosting, either.
I've known people who work for this company tell horror stories of how past-its-best meat is re-frozen then sent back out to other customers. I can quite believe it, now. No way am I taking that risk on my dog's health again; she deserves the best.
Go elsewhere. There are other raw companies now, and DAF shouldn't be anyone's first choice these days. Your dog is worth better than this.
Total let down of a company and dodgyâŠ
Total let down of a company and dodgy suspect meat
My 3 dogs have been eating this garbage for almost a year and looking back they have suffered many digestive issues....One of my darling dogs even passed away in June this year which is now making me wonder if Durham meat was the cause... sadly I'll never know now.
Was initially buying it through a local stockist (duck mince 'meat only' as my girls can't handle high volumes of bone)
The local stockist I was buying from was no longer supplying the 'meat only' duck and couldn't find it local elswhere so ended up on Durhams website to buy it direct from them...for which they charge £9.99 delivery for under £30 order...even if you buy double the amount they make sure it comes to under £50 so they can still extract a tenner delivery cost from you (its only free over £50)...whilst proudly boasting they're 'affordable'
Placed my order then recieved an email a few days later saying they can't deliver on the Tuesday and it would now be the Wednesday.
Then recieve a phone call a few days later saying it will now be delivered the FOLLOWING WEEK as they have 'delivery driver issues'...ask me if I still want it and I say yes
Then the day before the ORIGINAL delivery date I recieve yet another email telling me my 'original order' is now on its way and will be delivered 'tomorrow' ... tracking provided shows my order is being 'processed' and that it will be with me between 09.37-11.37 am
So the following day I'm sat there from 9am and by 12.30pm nothing has turned up so I call them for an explanation.
The lady says its a mistake, that my details must have been left on the delivery drivers' electronic system in error and that my order will be still delivered the following week as per the re-arrangement
Recieve a phone call yet again TODAY (4 days before my delivery is due) ...now telling me they cannot get this 'meat only' duck AT ALL and don't know when they will get it next... I'm told to choose something else or have a refund.
I wasn't even given the chance to go online and find an alternative from their website and was being pressured into making a decision there and then over the phone as the '12.00 pm deadline' was approaching for orders to my area (this converstation was at 12.37pm by the way)
I asked for just a bit of time to at least look on their website to choose but she refused so I had to opt for a refund instead
9 hours later and I still haven't even had an email confirming the order is cancelled and due for a refund
Frustrated at the way I've been treated I came onto trustpilot to see if others were having the same issues only to be met with shocking reviews about their meat.
like I said one of my girls died in June
Last month I was at the vet with one of my remaining 2 babies who was very poorly with a bad stomach
All last week my other girl had diarrhoea & vomiting
This is the only food they've been eating and lately its either smelt of absolutely nothing or smelt of the plastic packaging it comes in which upon reading some of these other reviews about actual plastic being found in the meat is now making me sick that I may have been slowly poisoning my beloved dogs...some of the meat has also been very watery and I havent detected that gamey duck smell on it in a long while...over time my dogs have also experienced stomach cramps, vomiting and constipation.
I'll never deal with Durham Animal feeds again and I'm sorry I ever fed this rubbish to my beautiful dogs
To all pet lovers...please find an alternative for your beloved animals
DO NOT FEED YOUR ANIMALS THIS FOOD.
DO NOT FEED YOUR ANIMALS THIS FOOD.
I took Sebastian to the vets after a sudden swelling on his face appeared. He was booked in to go under anaesthetic with suspecting some form of abscess. However what they found was disgusting.
Bones within the food are that sharp that they had penetrated through his top gum line and gone into his face. The bones were removed and put in a test tube which I still have. He also had X-rays to confirm the bones were not from his own body.
I called durhams to which CS said â Iâll stop you right there we donât do thatâ when I told them I wanted vet bill reimbursement.
I emailed an official complaint as well as a follow up giving them 5 working days before taking legal action.
They have ignored both emails. Therefore the next step will be to get back the cost of the feed via the bank and go to court.
I have also already reported to their governing body and will also be chasing that up as well.
If you look at the reviews I am not the only one whose animal has suffered due to their negligence. The fact they are aware and choosing not to do anything / ignore customers should tell you all you need to know.
Keep away from this company.
I note that they sell their products within other stores so Iâll also be contacting the other stores to warn them about this product and that they should remove from their shelves.
Absolutely horrendous company DO NOTâŠ
Absolutely horrendous company DO NOT BUY FROM THEM!!! First time ordering, spent £80 on frozen meat for my dogs and it was delivered in 32 degrees heat in an impossible location to find with no information of where it had been left, no delivery note, no picture of where it had been left, nothing!! Apparently, we as loyal customers are expected to go on a wild goose chase knocking on neighbours doors and looking in between parked cars to find our parcels. Let's just say the customer service has been nothing far from SHOCKING and Durham Animal Feeds have refused any responsibility. Now I am left with a despicable job of disposing of rotten meat as a result of the delivery driver's careless choices to leave it in the sun not to mention the company's ridiculous policy of not offering delivery notes. Appalling treatment.
Awful Awful Awful
Had used DAF for my raw food for quite a while but lately it has been so bad I have had to switch to another company - the packets are often not the correct weight so short changed and the food has become a lot more sloppy so obviously they are now putting more water in to make for cash, and the amount of big pieces of bone in them are really dangerous for my small dogs and one of them was actually choking on a piece. On two occasions I have even found bits of plastic in my dogs food. Several times my dogs have been sick after eating so decided not to give it to them anymore and buy from Naruto instead. I see many reviews where dogs have had to have operations so I will never use them again and suggest you also shop elsewhere for your pets safety
POOR QUALITY
POOR QUALITY. The portions is never to weight and once you've drained the excess water that's been pumped in you end up with roughly 400g and not what is stipulated on the packaging.
Also keep an eye on the bone content
Never again
Never again, possibly the rudest woman I have ever spoken with at the Weston Super Mare branch.
I have been feeding Durham animal feedsâŠ
I have been feeding Durham animal feeds raw dinners with fruit and veg for quite a while now and my whippet does very well on it. He will not touch other brands of raw food now, even the more expensive brands have him turning his nose up.
Found purple plastic shard in theâŠ
Found purple plastic shard in the complete mince. Glad the food hadn't fully defrosted and I was breaking up the block otherwise I might not have noticed and fed it to my dogs!
On reading reviews this seems like a common occurrence!
Great as a base which to add extras and toppers
Iâm surprised at the other reviews on this thread as I have had no issues whatsoever with excess bone or sloppy food. Yes itâs a lot cheaper than pro dog raw for example but I am more than happy with it and so are my dogs. I have a chihuahua, lhasapoo and a cocker and all 3 of them lick the bowl clean. I would like to add that I also add veg, duck feet, liver, hearts etc myself but it makes a great base to add all of these things. My experience has been all positive
Bad quality
Have used DAF for a number of years but this month's food was awful. The beef and blueberry was mostly huge lumps of bone and I found lead balls (likely buckshot) in the dogs bowl after feeding them game, I have also found bits of blue plastic in the meat. I emailed with pictures a week ago and have had nothing back. Now got a freezer full of meat I can't use and have had to do another order from a different company.
Really disappointed as they have previously been very good.
Honest and real raw food
Honest and real raw food. Possibly not for the faint of heart as you can see what youâre getting, instead of it being pulverised and turned into paste.
My dogs love it and there is a great range of different meats.
