Deeper Africa first took the time to get to know our family and our interests/goals for the safari, both to help build our safari and pair us with a guide that matched our interests. Our guide, Albert, was phenomenal. Beyond the classic safari sights (big 5), our family loves birds, and Albert is a bird expert. He spotted and identified 84 species with us! Albert was also very open and knoweldgable about culture and other aspects of Tanzania. We also had a customized anthropology experience at Oldupai. We would definitely use Deeper Africa for another safari.

everything about our trip was phenomenal. the food, staff, and experiences everywhere we stayed was top notch. truly once in a lifetime.

Deeper Africa was a full service provider and handled all the details. Meaning, they we able to handle any needs or desires we presented to them. They were proactive and followed through on all commitments. Staff were knowledgeable and responsive. And, there were added value benefits like gifts and even a personalized lunch meeting to prepare us for the trip.

Deeper Africa was definitely a great choice! They really took the time to help us plan our trip based on our goals for seeing animals and then they placed us in amazing camps with fantastic guides. Honestly this was the greatest trip of my life and I'll use them again when we go back. Tanzania's got my heart!!

The parks, guides, animal viewing were spectacular. The accommodations were wonderful. The food was delicious. And most importantly, all the logistics worked well.

The entire experience was fantastic. I'm still on cloud nine. Everything from the communications in advance with details on packing, safety, tipping, photography guidelines, culture, reading materials, etc to the well planned air travel schedule, camp/safari experience, to wonderful/knowledgable/kind/caring guides. As a solo female traveler, I fellt very safe and well cared for by everyone. I'm very grateful for this magical experience.

Traveling with a private guide in both Uganda and Zimbabwe which was arranged through Deeper Africa.
Getting their personal history within the history of the country as they and their families have grown up and lived under historically repressive regimes ( Idi Amin in Uganda and Mugabe in Zimbabwe ) was the highlight of the trip for my brother and I. Of course , the wildlife viewing was everything we imagined it would be.
In particular, I would recommend our guide Lewis Managua in Zimbabwe. He was with us throughout our time in Zimbabwe. His knowledge of the flora, fauna and history of the country was outstanding. If I was to travel back to Africa, I would without a second thought engage Lewis as our private guide not only for Zimbabwe, but for virtually any country in eastern or southern Africa. He has guided throughout the continent.

From the planning to the return home we had the utmost confidence in Deeper Africa (DA) and great appreciation for our two patient African guides, the accommodations, the food, service, transfers, and assists through airfields/airports. The owners, Karen and Will, as do their employees, know where they are sending you. Their in-depth knowledge comes from their personal visits to each accommodation, recommended restaurants, side trips, etc. They have worked devotedly for twenty years to develop solid relationships with African business communities and have made efforts to build the economy by encouraging responsible tourism and we the tourist gain the benefits of these relationships. These folks are not simply a tour company, they are invested in the betterment of Africa, in their business associates there, the local tribes and communities, and in their efforts to empower women. I respect this ethic.
The focus of the DA entire team from Boulder CO to Kenya and Uganda, served to make the trip worry free so that we could focus on African wildlife, fantastic scenery, and culture. Christy even helped us to procure our visas in likely a fraction of the time it would have taken for us to do.
Having a Kenyan, then Ugandan personal guide known to DA was ideal for our family. We did not have to hire a guide and car at the camps where we stayed and where we’d be grouped with strangers. We had the freedom to freely move about our guide’s personal Land Cruiser (LC) to find our best vantage point for viewing and photography. We were respectful of the LC and removed our shoes before stepping on the seats. He takes care so we did too,

Our guides David Siloma (Kenya) and Abbiaz Rwamwiri (Uganda) were committed to accommodating us. Before and during our game drives, David stayed in touch with guides and rangers to know where the animals were, especially the more elusive cats, so that he could drive us to see them. He pointed out a rare and endangered striped hyena, with his eagle eyes. His excellent photography skills aided us to take better photos than we amateurs might have and he parked his LC for the best camera lighting. His driving was safe, routes were efficient, and he was clearly hard at work during our long days. He kept his vehicle clean and comfortable. He made sure we didn’t miss a thing, including the wildebeest and zebra river crossing, prides of lions, and even a lone pregnant cheetah.
David set up many meals in the wild and could not have done more to help us to us feel safe when outside the LC, to keep us well nourished and hydrated, and ultimately quite pampered.
His knowledge of the animals, including his ability to anticipate the potential for certain behaviors was impressive. He knows Kenya deeply and you’d be blessed to have him as our guide. We certainly were for ten days.

Abbiaz, our Uganda guide, was equally brilliant in his depth of knowledge of the country, history, and animal behavior. He too graciously met our needs rather than his. His jovial upbeat spirit served to ease us among the gorillas.
We discussed the political history of Uganda, learned he is fluent in multiple languages, has a history in working for the US State Department, and we could see that he is held in high regard wherever he is known. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of Uganda. His knowledge enriched our overall tour.
Abbiaz made sure that our two gorilla treks were exceptional experiences that were moving, humbling, and unforgettable. Words do not do these gorilla visits justice though the word “awe” was created for such events.
He helped physically situate us for great views and photos as he anticipated the gorilla movements. His familiarity with the rangers, guides, and porters served us well on these adventures.
We hired porters on the recommendation of DA and were glad of that. Not only does such hire support the local community but some of the treks require helping hands over the sometimes slick and steep terrain. The downhill on the more rigorous terrain can test and stress knees. Consider taping knees if you do a level two or three trek. Even on the easiest trek we needed porters to carry us over a river because a bridge was washed out.
When we were concerned with making our flight home because of the surprisingly long security lines for cars at the Entebbe airport, Abbiaz was calming and secured for us a VIP airport escort so we had time to spare and wait. He was another gift on our Deeper Africa safari.
Africa has so much to offer and my respect for nature was deepened by this adventure. Deeper Africa excelled in delivering an outstanding safari.

We had an amazing trip to Kenya and Uganda thanks to Karen Zulauf and the staff at Deeper Africa! Their attention to detail and personal touch made our experience the best, ever. For example, they setup the safaris according to our interests and budget; followed up and did all the leg work to get us there and back safely like filling out the Visas and providing all transportation arrangements; and finally, provided ONE guide in each country! Guides can make or break your trip and we had the best! Thanks Bernard and Richard! Our accommodations were also excellent and the food was delicious. We can’t wait to book another safari with Deeper Africa! They are the best tour company we have ever used!

From the deeply knowledgeable guides to the beautiful accommodations Deeper Africa was outstanding. My family had dietary restrictions and allergy (with laundry) issues and all was managed seamlessly!

During our Safari, our guide Bernard in Kenya and Richard in Uganda were very knowledgeable and personal. They were able to answer all of our questions with professionalism! We saw every animal that we were hoping to see and more!

This is the only company to use for your Safari experience! We are already discussing going back to a couple other countries for another Safari experience in the next few years.

Deeper Africa allowed Africa to truly come to life. The experiences with the animal kingdom has killed any future zoo experience and has given me experiences that will last a lifetime. However, even greater (in my experience) than the animals were the staff. These guides were an unexpected revelation! They literally knew everything there was to know about each animal, insect, GRASS, I mean if you saw it and asked, they had beautiful and TRUE things to say about it! They knew each creature by its name - even when they changed names. Their knowledge was genuine too, they didnt just study up on these animals and knew information...they had experiences from their past and from growing up locally in Zimbabwe with these animals. They made the beauty of Africa transparent and shine - special shout out to Lewis Mangaba - the man, they myth, the absolute LEGEND of a guide!

We had a great experience with Deeper Africa! Everything was planned to perfection and we didn't have to think about a thing while we were there. Highly recommend!

We had a very complicated itinerary with 5 couples arriving from different places at different times. It all came together flawlessly. Additionally, their expertise in helping to choose the perfect camps made the trip beyond perfect.

Deeper Africa created a custom Safari for me (41/F) and my Grandmother (84/F) that far exceeded our high expectations! They were very communicative and provided extremely helpful suggestions and solutions throughout the entire planning process. During the Safari, the Deeper Africa guides (especially Ombeni) were knowledgeable, professional, kind, and pleasant. Ombeni was a wonderful travel companion and made the trip extra special. The accommodations that Deeper Africa booked for us were beautiful, comfortable, safe, unique, and provided incredible food; the were even able to accommodate my very challenging dietary restrictions. We highly recommend working with the team at Deeper Africa and we look forward to working with them again!

Deeper Africa did an excellent job communicating with us during the entire experience. The camps had great accommodations, food, and guides. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

From start to finish, Deeper Africa provided superior services. This was the second trip we made with them and they continue to shine. Albert Nanyaro and Abiaz Rwamwiri were amazing guides, making sure that we were well taken care of and that we saw all that there was to see. Their knowledge of the birds and animals made the trip amazing. And Abiaz is one of the most knowledgeable people about the gorillas and made our four days of gorilla trekking one of the most memorable experiences ever. Kudos to all of the Deeper Africa team. You are the best.

We (husband/wife/25-YO daughter) provided Deeper Africa our intended dates of travel and what areas/animals were of interest to us, in Tanzania. We did that roughly 10 months in advance of the trip. After an initial call to get a sense of us, Karen provided a suggested itinerary for an 8-day safari (Tarangire; crater; eastern Serengeti), and connected us with her preferred travel agency for flight logistics. The agency's hotline was instrumental in rebooking us when our departing flight from Boston was cancelled the morning of our international flight. Karen suggested we stay at Lamala properties (Mpingo Ridge; Nanyukie; Hamerkop), except for the crater (Serena on rim). She also suggested that we use a guide from Deeper Africa (Mr. Ombeni Sampson), rather than the resorts' guides. Okay, that's the background to our trip. Here's the feedback: (1) Deeper Africa planned the trip thoughtfully, and there isn't a single decision that we would we have made differently, even in hindsight; (2) planning is important, but the guide is responsible for executing the itinerary, and our guide (Ombeni) did it flawlessly; (3) let me repeat, you are in a truck 8 hours a day for 8 days straight with your guide--- he or she can elevate your trip beyond expectations (in our case) or crush your trip with inexperienced decisions (Ombeni was frequently giving game advice to guides from other outfits or offering mechanical tips on broken-down trucks); (4) Karen prepared us well for the trip, with multiple checklists (clothes; tips; medicines); (5) the Lemala properties are outstanding, with five-star amenities (I refuse to say "glamping," since thankfully I never felt like we were even remotely close to camping), extremely gracious and friendly staff (cannot be overstated; they are wonderful people), commanding views (Mpingo Ridge cannot be adequately described in words); and (6) the food at the Lemala properties is excellent (and unexpectedly on the gourmet side), and you will not be disappointed with the 3-course menus. Last word--- invest some time in researching your guide's experience; Karen nailed it for us as Ombeni made our trip so much more informative, comfortable and fun.

The team at Deeper Africa was great. They planned a great safari adventure for us and were very helpful with preparing and packing for our trip. Our safari guide, Sultan, was exceptional. He was extremely knowledgeable about Tanzania's national parks and wildlife, was a highly skilled driver across sometimes challenging terrain, and was excellent company during our many hours of game drives and travel.
