Dillenger began in 2007 when the founders of a small Aussie-based engineering firm were looking to build a custom bike frame made from an intricate arrangement of stainless steel rods. This seemly ârun-of-the-millâ hobby project led to the intriguing thought â âshould we motorize this thing?â Being engineers, the temptation to motorize anything was just too much to bear. This prototype vintage space frame chassis electric bike proved to be a bit of a hit and the company was asked to produce a few models locally for existing clients. One thing led to another and before long, this engineering firm was obsessed with everything electric bike related. Later in 2007, Dillenger Pty Ltd was registered as a company in Queensland, Australia. The following years led to steady, conservative growth, selling limited models locally in Queensland, Australia. Sales often took a back seat to the development of new, better-engineered models. This strategy limited Dillengerâs growth early on, but also meant that production models developed quickly and became the most reliable in a market of otherwise notoriously unreliable products. New technology in batteries, brushless motors and intelligent motor controllers led to huge improvements in the quality and reliability of electric bikes from 2008 to 2010. Even more recently, the reduction in the cost of basic electric bike components has led to the explosion the e-bike market around the world. With the reduction in cost and increase in the size of the market, there has been a flood of startups importing cheap knock-offs. Already, many businesses seem to come and go, leaving customers in a lurch with no after sales support. Dillenger marks the 7th year of production with the sale of the 10,000th unit since 2007. Dillengerâs market in the last 3 years has exploded. Products are now sold online 24/7, all around the world.

I phoned on the bank holiday Friday and got a reply call on the Monday sorted out what I required ordered the spares and they were delivered within a week really good service
Thanks Robin Dow
Had to wait 5 and a half months for the bike and they still isn't right, missing the electric charger.emailed them and still waiting.been 3 days now and they still ain't been in touch.not happy when you spend £1500 on an item they said will be 6 weeks, not 6 months.brought for the summer, now it's Autumn.
I have ordered a Bafang BBS-HD mid drive ebike kit from Dillenger. Needed the customer service quite a bit! Seems that the customer service is located outside UK, so opening times are very different. That means I had to wait till the next morning for a reply on any question. This made conversations very slow. All questions did get answered in the end though.
Instructions in manuals were not all correct/ up-to-date for the product I received.
And worst of all: my motor stopped working after about 180km of use. Communication with customer service about the warranty was ok, but it took much longer than necessary for the problem to be solved. After 2 weeks and some troubles with import duties that needed to be paid I received replacement controller (part of the motor). I had to install this myself. Without clear instructions. A job that was way more technical than installing the motor itself. I'm happy that in the end I was able to pull it off, but took a lot of time and I had to glue a broken part together... which I don't trust much.
I'm VAT-registered in Belgium and asked for a VAT-free invoice like always for an intracommunal delivery in the EU. I was mislead to believe that this was not possible but that I could reclaim the VAT easily. This was not the case as Dillenger is not VAT registered in the EU!! The online shop seems to be in the UK, but the company is not registered there! And therefore they don't need to follow EU rules for online shopping like the right to return items within 2 weeks if you change your mind.
All in all I was happy because they offered a good choice of products (I ordered a Lekkie bling ring and grin Satiator charger) at a good price. But if I had known that they were not VAT registered in EU and didn't follow the EU rules I would have ordered somewhere else.
This is a review of my experiences buying the Dillenger Street Legal Electric Bike Kit - Samsung Power. After extensive research (mostly online) I bought this kit as the ideal match for electrifying my upgraded Dahon folding bike. What particularly appealed were the e-brake sensors allowing the use of my existing STI brakes, the removable PAS sensor, the built in controller on the battery cage and the neat wiring loom/plug connections. My only reservation was whether the PAS system would be compatible with the Hollowtech II bottom bracket and Shimano crankset fitted to the bike. I checked with Dillenger before purchase and they said that this should not be a problem. On this strength of this I placed my order on 30/06/2016 and received the kit on 08/07/2016 not very long really BUT the slightly worrying thing about the service is that after the order acknowledgement all goes silent until the item is shipped - a worrying week of no information, not even 'we are working on it' or 'we expect to ship in 7 days time'. Worrying when you have shelled out £500 to people you have never met. Once shipped, email notification is sent and the package arrived next day - wonderful.
The kit itself is brilliant - well thought out and very well put together. The instructions (download) are clear and easy to follow. With the help of some 'sugru' almost any positioning for sensors can easily be achieved. The wiring is neat and everything works brilliantly - except for one!
The PAS sensor DOES NOT work with the Hollowtech II Bottom bracket and crankset system. The length of the integrated Hollowtech crankshaft and the method of securing the left crank arm do not allow the PAS disk to be fitted without the left crank arm being fitted so insecurely as to fall off when strong pedalling pressure is applied. Sadly I only found this out after having already trimmed the PAS sensor to fit the Hollowtech shaft. As a consequence I have had to replace the Hollowtech bottom bracket and crankset with a tapered spline bottom bracket and crankset as well as ordering another replacement PAS disk.
Another point of which to be aware is that if the throttle is to be mounted, it does require a 22mm bar - nothing else will fit. If you have either 26mm or 31.8 bars, a separate 22mm handlebar mounting extender is needed.
On the road performance is excellent - just what I hoped for. Everything works excellently, especially the PAS - just love it.
Overall I'm very impressed with the product but the service (customer communication and in-house technical knowledge) could be improved.
I was sold a dud bike. The summer is nearly over and I still don't have a replacement back wheel. We have spent hours filming and taping the problem, calling and emailing. I cannot recommend this company.

Bike arrived by courier in record time, well packaged and complete. It was easily assembled and looks great. I have found it heavier than expected. In fact, not being very strong myself, I am unable to lift it onto the roof cycle rack on the car. Will have to get a boot-lid rack.
Just returned from a caravan holiday (carried the bike in the 'van) and did a bit of riding on country lanes and forest trails. I found the bike handled well and motor very responsive.
I like the black matt finish and my grandson thought it very 'cool'. So not only, it seems, I shall have street-cred but also enjoy much happy cycling.
I had a few doubts as to the ease of fitting a couple of the components. However after exchanging a few e-mails with extremely helpful and efficient Dillenger staff, the advice given made me feel confident the kit would fit.
I ordered on the Monday and it arrived two days later.
Fitting the components was straightforward.
I downloaded the instruction manual from the Dillenger website, but felt it would also have been a good idea to supply a paper copy.
Only criticism is that I found the instructions for setting the display could have been clearer.
Overall an excellent buy.

I found it difficult to ascertain the required size of fuse needed for my particular bike.

My step over arrived with two scratches on orange/red cross bar but was going off on holiday straight away and had no time to contact Dillinger. No tools were included as per instructions. Thankfully I had what was required.
Instructions on how to use the computer would be helpful. I had to use Google to download details.
We are on the west coast of Ireland at present and really enjoying the freedom with these bikes. I'm 71 next month and thought that my cycling days were over but Dillinger has changed all that.
By the way their UK staff were excellent when seeking advice and making the purchase and also getting the bikes to us in time for our trip.
Many thanks.

I purchased a Dillinger 250W E-Bike - 8Ah Battery kit with 1 year warranty. It ran well for 13 months of light use and the battery was re-charged exactly as per the manual. After that time, the motor started to cut out at about 25% of its normal range and would not climb hills any more.
I returned the battery to Dillenger at my expense and they wrote back that it had âfailedâ their test. They offered a new one at an ungenerous 10% discount. My battery had been recharged less than 100 times, but their specifications claim 1000 charge cycles.
I complained to the government consumer office and still Dillenger refused to do anything.
So I took legal action. Under Australian consumer law, suppliers have to honour their claims. Dillenger confirmed that 1000 charge cycles is the specification. Dillenger admitted that they reduced their two year warranty to one year after 2014 because they are using a lower quality product. Yet they continue to falsely claim that their warranty is âindustry leadingâ and that their batteries are good for 1000 recharges.
The Tribunal decided that 2 years was a reasonable battery life for a warranty and ordered Dillenger to pay compensation.
I am very disappointed they would not be prepared to back up their claims when something goes wrong with one of their products. Pursuing them in court was a lot of effort and not everyone â particularly purchasers outside Australia - would be able to litigate. I am hoping that it might improve their approach to warranties.
I live in Sweden ordered from Britain, ordered on a Tuesday and got it home delivered to my door on Friday.
i got a scott mtb with disc brakes. The installation went ok.
Becase my scott bike had some other type of brake disk I had to go to the bike shop to buy standard brake disc. To fit the brake disc, I used a extra washer. The pedal assist sensor was a bit tricky to install because it was crowded in that spot. I liket that it came with ebrake sensors.
I have cycled about 55 km.
In assistance level 5 I feel no resistance when I cycle in straight paths.
I have emailed support and asked technical questions but I got the answers at night swedish time so I suppose that all questions are answered from Australia and not uk.
I do have a car, i do ride the bike to the store and sometimes work too. it's fun and you get fresh air and its refreshing.
This is the end of my review and remember this is only my opininion, not facts.

As previous reviewers have mentioned a lot of points I would have included in my review I recommend you wholeheartedly read all the reviews and heed the advice, when I first got my kit I was limited to just a few basic reviews â all amazing reviews thanks guys.
Kit purchased June 2016 still going strong and in perfect working condition.
Please ensure you research as much as you can with regards to buying and installing a kit and I know itâs annoying but â
SAFETY FIRST YOU WILL BE TRAVELLING FAST ON A SMALL DOWN HILL GRADIENT WHEN SET TO FULL SPEED.
With that in mind the kit must be fitted securely, correctly and ensure you know your braking distances and braking limits.
My build was a basic NEW off the shelf cheap MTB, ridged steel 20 inch frame, 18 speed and V brakes. I replaced the tyres to 26 inch x 2 inch puncture resistant at a cost of £50.00, I installed a torque arm however I did not buy it from Dillinger with hindsight I should have, they look better quality but that is just from what I have seen NOT tested, I purchased two torque arms and had to mash them together to make it work, I believe if I had not tried to keep ever increasing costs down I should of just purchased one from Dillinger (IMO). I installed the torque arm for extra safety and security. With a few minor worries concerning the battery rack not lining up to the bottle holder screw fittings and having to use one screw and some zip ties/hose clamp (not recommended by Dillinger) it has so far stayed in place and secure, the only note I would make here is normal bottle holder screw will not have enough tensile strength to hold the rack and/or the battery I found some high tensile strength screws that fitted perfectly and were cheap.
Tidying the cables was easier than I thought it would be because of the cable design of this kit, the reason I purchased this kit was the LCD to controller cable design and the stealth controller meaning minimal cabling and no extra bag needed for lots of cables or a square controller box. The whole kit is amazing and highly advanced in design and technology, the motor is quiet and stylish with some nice decal compared to others I viewed.
Slight concerns â the battery charging port rubber bung does not and still does not fit and the USB cover is extremely tight and hard to remove. The product description states PAS level 5-9, this does not make sense as PAS levels start at 1 and go up to 5 and even with the advance manual this cannot be changed. PAS 1 puts between 50-60 watts of power to the motor â PAS2 80-100W â PAS3 150-200W â PAS4 up to 250W then PAS5 jumps to 500W, it would can be cool to change these ratioâs but even the advanced level 2 manual gets complicated, it may be possible to do this however I have not ventured as of yet. PAS5 is super quick. :)
Disappointments â The only major down side I found was the wheel needed âtruingâ (ie the spokes need tightening) by my local bike shop at a cost of £8.00 and a two day wait to test out my new kit.
All in all this product is worth every penny, I have used my bike every day the battery lasts, at PAS4 I have had a max of 32 miles total distance before the battery died that does include hills and a lot of steady pedalling. If using it for speed hence not riding economically and doing long steep hills I have max out at 22 miles on a fully charged battery. Most important of all I now ride a lot further than I ever would of and anyone who tells you that you will not get any exercise from an e-bike has never ridden one or if they have its just using the throttle to pop to the shops and back, you will get out more and if you can pedal with PAS 1 or 2 all the time you will go further and get plenty of fresh(ish) air and exercise. â Phil Type 1 diabetic (22 months and counting).
A quick edit - August 2016 - I had to contact customer support over a technical problem and Dilleneger went above my expectations, responding immediately to my problem via email and finding the best solution for my situation within 8 days - amazing customer service another feather in Dillenegers cap!
