I rented a car trough Rentalcars uk, and paid a full insurance to Rentalcars,so Directrent charged me a deposit of €2600! I choose a Skoda Kamiq!Me and my family were picked up from the airport with a Skoda Octavia and when I asked the driver if this is the car we get,he said no,this car is bigger than what I choose! After they failed to convince me to pay a full insurance to them ,they suddenly decide to give the Skoda Octavia,the we've been picked up with! When we did the preinspection,the employee rushed me ,after I discovered more scratches,dents and stone chips,than it was recorded by them,refusing to take record of them and saying that I should take pictures ,that is my responsibility! When I returned the car,two employees came for inspection and went straight to scratches and dents they knew about,some of them I had photos, but some didn't! I am 100% sure I didn't do those! So they charged €1250 for 2 stone chips and a scratch! Absolutely destroyed our end of holiday and create a lot of stress! Stay away of this scamers!

This company is a scam. Do not use them. Buried on the terms and conditions the company has a rule that says your credit card has to be “embossed” (they seem to have missed the fact we are in 2025 and very few cards still have that useless physical feature that does not increase security in any way shape or form). Their agents are convinced cards that are not embossed cannot be used to block the deposit amount! However, they are happy to immediately propose a solution that involves paying a made up amount for “insurance” (in our case it was €200 for 4 days). Trying to argue with them is equally useless as they believe it is the booking site that writes the t&c, not them. Avoid like the plague and go for an actual serious company.

Terrible experience with Direct Rent – avoid at all costs!

We arrived at “Bucharest” (Otopeni) Airport and were met with chaos from the start. Direct Rent showed up to collect us in a small personal car, despite us being a group of five. We told them it was too small, and they eventually came back with another small car — barely enough for us and our luggage.

When we finally got to their office, the situation got worse. They claimed our credit card suddenly didn’t work, even though we had used it earlier the same day without any issue. Instead of helping us find a solution, they pressured us into paying more money and insisted we purchase an extra insurance we didn’t want.

The staff were rude, pushy, and extremely unprofessional. We were left feeling frustrated, scammed, and completely disrespected. This was by far the worst rental experience we’ve ever had.

Avoid Direct Rent – they’re dishonest, disorganized, and treat customers terribly. You’re better off renting from a reputable company, even if it costs a bit more. Don’t risk ruining the start of your trip like we did.

Terrible experience. Pickup was disorganized, the car reeked of smoke, and the rep had clearly just smoked in it. He tried to use the car to collect someone else before reluctantly giving it to us. They required a €2,600 deposit but wouldn’t accept Amex or allow splitting between Mastercards. I was pressured into paying €180 for insurance late at night. The car was unsafe—driver’s seat was broken, the guy said what do you want me to do i am not a mechanic. I was told it was diesel when it was actually petrol, probably to try and get us to pay damages as the car later happened to have issues. On the last day, warning lights came on and I reported it, only to be falsely accused of causing damage. Staff pointed at a tire cut I didn’t cause and warned me about police involvement. Completely unacceptable and intimidating. I’ve asked for a full refund and will escalate if necessary. Avoid at all costs.

Absolutely disappointed with the service. Upon arrival, they tried to impose an additional payment, allegedly because of an “inappropriate” bank card, although I have rented cars in other countries with the same card without any problems. The employee quickly disappeared, leaving us on the street to inspect the car on our own, unaccompanied. And when we returned the car, the new agent began to attribute micro-scratches to us that had been there before us, despite the video evidence. Complete irresponsibility and attempts to rip off the excess. I do not recommend them to anyone.

I had a terrible experience with Direct Car and feel it’s important to warn other travelers.

When I returned the vehicle, they accused me of causing damage that was clearly already there when I picked up the car. There was no proper inspection at pick-up, and they rushed through the process, making it hard to document anything. Upon return, they pointed out scratches that looked old and then charged me over €1,000 without any clear proof that I caused them.

This felt like a scam, and I later discovered that other customers had similar experiences with Direct Car! Renting a car should not end in stress, financial loss, and mistrust. Avoid Direct Car!!

If i can give them less then one star i would! From start to finish they are scammers! They find old scraches and take your maoney for that! Avoid them

AVOID! This business is set up to scam customers and exploit insurance companies from the outset. They made €500 in just four days of hire by charging for an existing windscreen stone chip and a minor scratch behind the door handle.

Tip: If you, like me, only read reviews after making a reservation – DO NOT sign the car condition document in the office before inspecting the car. Once signed, they will not amend it. Apparently, it is your responsibility to take photos and videos of the car's condition.

RYANAIR, you should be ashamed of selling car hire from this company. I will NOT rent through you again!

Pessimo rental car. La persona che ti riceve è un maleducato totale e un cafone della peggior specie oltre che un truffatore. Ci ha rubato 300 euro per un graffio sulla plastica del faretto antinebbia tra l altro non fatto nemmeno da noi dato che auto è rimasta x 2 giorni nel garage dell hotel. Absolute nightmare experience! AVOID at all costs. This company operates a systematic scam targeting families and vulnerable travelers. Here's what happened to me:

1. Forced to pay extra deposit fee of 182.02€ (more than verbally agreed 175€) despite having valid credit cards and full insurance, processed in undisclosed local currency against contract terms.

2. Promised VW Passat switched to worn-out Skoda Kodiaq (81,400km) with undisclosed damages (exposed screws on steering wheel, multiple stone chips).

3. Return process was pure extortion:
- Falsely claimed fuel level discrepancy (disproven with photos)
- Fabricated non-existent damages demanding 850€
- Employee Alex Barbu became aggressive and threatening
- Refused airport transfer to force payment
- Verbally harassed us in front of crying children
- Total scammed amount: over 1,227€

Their employee openly stated they "can say anything they want and will always be right." This matches numerous other reviews describing identical scam tactics.

Despite having full documentation, photos, and witnesses, they forced payment under duress, threatening to make us miss our flight.

Don't be fooled by their artificial 7.1 rating on RentalCars - check their true 1-star Google reviews, Trustpilot and TripAdvisor. This is an organized scam operation that should be shut down immediately.

STAY AWAY to protect yourself and your family from this traumatic experience. Reporting to authorities and consumer protection.

Beware! Dishonest and Predatory Practices – Avoid This Company

I had a terrible experience with Direct Rent a their employee Alex Barbu and strongly advise others to avoid renting from them. They take advantage of customers by charging for damages that never happened, using the situation to squeeze extra money out of you.

When I returned the car, they suddenly “discovered” a scratch that was never there when I picked it up. Despite having taken photos at the beginning of the rental, they refused to acknowledge them and insisted I pay an outrageous fee. It was clear that they were looking for any excuse to charge me more.

The staff was unhelpful and dismissive, and the whole process felt like a well-rehearsed scam. After reading other reviews, I realized that I was not the only one who had fallen victim to their shady tactics.

Future customers, be extremely cautious if you decide to rent from them—document everything with photos and videos, and don’t trust their so-called “inspection process.” Better yet, save yourself the stress and rent from a more reputable company. I will never use their services again!

This rental company operates a deceptive scheme where they advertise extremely low prices but pressure customers into purchasing additional insurance upon arrival. If you refuse to pay an extra £30-£40/day, they will find any excuse to deny you a vehicle. I strongly condemn these practices, as they put customers—especially non-locals—in a difficult position. It’s best to avoid this company and opt for an international rental provider instead. While their rates may be higher, they save you from unnecessary hassle and unexpected costs.

When we took the car, they were in a rush, we did took video and pics.At the return point they have tried to put on us minor bits wich can easily be missed...luckily we had the video and it showed it was there. Anoied they couldn't find anything, they blamed us for a tiny stain on the back seat, we never seen it before they point it.

Dit is een grote oplichtingsbende! Auto was niet op te halen volgens de omschrijving , hierdoor hebben wij de auto pas 1.5 uur later gekregen dan was afgesproken.
Bij het inleveren van de auto bleven ze maar zoeken. Allemaal dingen benoemen die ze zagen, gelukkig hadden wij een filmpje gemaakt waarop die schade al zichtbaar was. Ze bleven maar zoeken tot ze uiteindelijk een krasje aan de binnenkant van de deur hadden gevonden

Deze oplichters bleven zoeken tot ze wat vonden. Ga nooit met deze mensen in zee!!! EEN GROTE OPLICHTERSBENDE!!!

Onbetrouwbaar bij inleveren van auto. Opeens was er schade maar nadat we het filmpje dat wij bij oplevering hadden gemaakt lieten zien, hoefde we niets te betalen. Maar toen vonden ze iets in de auto zodat er toch schade van € 400 moest worden betaald. Schandalig

een grote oplichtings bende bij eerst komen ze al 1,5 uur te laat en bij het terug brengen van de auto werd er een krasje aan de binnenkant van de deur gevonden want ze bleven zoeken om iets te vinden en vanwege de creditcardborg waren we verplicht dit te betalen EEN GROTE OPLICHTINGS BENDE

Similair to other reviewers, my credit card wasnt accepted as it wasnt embossed. I offered another amex card that was embossed but conveniently for them they dont accept Amex. This is a clear strategy for them to charge higher insurance premiums..more than 10 times the cost of the car rental in my case.I had already purchased third party insurance but this was not acceptable by them.
When i challenged all this the rep was texting the "boss" to offer me discounts, to which i still declined.A clear way to try get more money from people.

They also tried downgrade the model of car i booked.

I took the decision to take the hit on the cost of the rental and cancel there and then as i felt the return process would be just as bad, to which other reviewers confirmed.

SCAM - AVOID - ZERO STARS
Extremely Disappointing Experience - Not Recommended

I recently rented a car through an airline and, despite seeing previous negative reviews, I decided to proceed, taking out additional insurance from a separate provider as a precaution. Unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing.

1st Issue: Upon arrival, the agent attempted to charge an additional 300 euros, claiming it was due to my credit card not being embossed. After I insisted that I would not pay any extra and requested a cancellation, the agent decided to proceed with the rental, despite stating it was against their rules. For context, embossed cards are no longer a common requirement, and I have rented cars across Europe using my UK credit card without any issues.

2nd Issue: After paying the initial deposit, the agent left abruptly, stating he had to pick up another customer from the airport. This left my wife and me in the rain to inspect the car ourselves. He instructed us to "take a good look around, the car status is your responsibility from now on, and you need to return it in the same state." There was no attempt to conduct a proper vehicle check with us, which is standard practice elsewhere.

3rd Issue: Upon returning the car, we were directed to a different location, where we encountered another agent who was extremely unprofessional. He claimed there were scratches on the car that I had not identified, despite being barely visible even with close inspection. I provided video evidence showing that a minor scratch was already present when I picked up the car, but this was disregarded. When I collected the vehicle, the initial agent had assured me that such tiny scratches, likely from luggage, would not be considered damage. However, this second agent insisted that I would need to deal with the office to resolve the matter, implying additional charges would be assessed.

I have numerous videos and photos to support my claims, though I am currently unable to publish them here due to legal restrictions

Wish I had read all these reviews. Same happened with us. Charges 700 euro for what is obviously thin paint on the mirror from the factory and a broken headlight. The headlight (stone chip) was not even visible to the naked eye. I had to run my fingernail across it to even feel it. Yes, I had insurance, but still, this is ridiculous. I have photos I will be sending to the insurance company and reporting insurance fraud.
