I am extremely disappointed with the service I received from Gatehouse — the entire process was frustrating, unnecessarily delayed, and handled with a complete lack of urgency or care.

From the outset, I made it clear that we were on a tight timeline and needed things to move quickly. Despite this, I had to wait a week and a half just for the initial call with Suzette — a call that could have easily been replaced by a simple online form. This delay was the first of many, and things only got worse from there.

Following that call, we had to wait another two weeks for an “application call,” which required a long list of documents. I did my part and provided every single document within the same day it was requested. Still, the process dragged on.

If you are using a gifted deposit, be warned: their process around this is completely excessive and overbearing. Our donor received their funds via inheritance, and yet we were asked to provide will documents and more — totally unnecessary and intrusive. Throughout this process, I emailed and called Suzette multiple times with no response. The lack of communication was appalling.

Then came the final insult: after paying the application fee, we were declined within two days with no explanation whatsoever. We later discovered on our own that the issue was tied to incorrect credit report information, where my husband’s twin brother’s name had mistakenly appeared on his report. If the underwriters had taken the time to properly review the report, they would have seen this clearly and given us the opportunity to resolve it. Instead, they didn’t bother — they simply dismissed it without a second thought.

Gatehouse knew from day one that we were only interested in halal mortgages, and this limited our options significantly. To be treated with such indifference and lack of care in spite of that is absolutely unacceptable.

To be clear: this company wasted our time, took our money, and failed to show any sense of responsibility or urgency throughout the entire process. I would absolutely not recommend Suzette — or Gatehouse — to anyone seeking a smooth, efficient, or respectful service.

She was exceptionally quick, responsive, and helpful in guiding us through the finance application. Her professionalism, made a real difference. It’s rare to find a bank in the UK offering Shariah-compliant finance, and we consider it a great opportunity. Ms. Rana’s dedication truly stood out and gave us confidence every step of the way. Only one recommendation, please make the conveyance panel a bit wider, as experienced not all conveyance company is in your panel, but I think it’s a supply and demand issue. Hopefully you as a bank will do everything possible to reach out broader consumer. Many people are skeptic about Islamic finance, but I can tell them, you are less complicated and no nonsense.

This is the first time to use GH bank and Shaz has been fantastic with us, explained everything and helping through out the process.

I am using Gatehouse Bank for the purchase of my first home and am incredibly pleased with the process thus far. Undoubtedly, this is due to the excellent service provided by Shaz. I did feel like this would be a daunting experience, but her efficiency and clarity have made this an enjoyably smooth experience to date and I look forward to the next steps!

I initially did not have that much of a good experience with my first adviser which I don't want to mention her name as a lot of people have said enough about the bad experience they had with her as well, I felt belittled and disrespected after my interaction with her.
I requested to change my adviser and Susan has been superb, she listens and explain things in detail and encourages questions to make sure I understand what am getting myself into.

This is our second time applying for a mortgage with GH bank (mortgage offer received first time on a different property which was a long process mainly from administrative perspective). We are now in the second week following application awaiting an offer. Both times our advisor has been Rana Faza who has been supportive and helpful in liasing with her colleagues to facilitate next steps. Great experience making a mortgage application with Suzette Brivet. She squeezed us in last minute so we could make the application as soon as possible. This is our second mortgage with gatehouse and third mortgage application.

Review as at 05 May 2025: To a customer, a bank is as good as the employees that deals with the customer. I have been fortunate enough to be dealing with bank colleague Shazia Essa as my primary contact. She understood the urgency of my application and while the bank process, annual leaves and holidays, can’t be avoided, in high and sight, my application took 3 working days to be processed. That means, apply, send to underwriter, receive queries from underwriter, answer them satisfactorily with follow-ups and instruct valuation. These all were done from Wednesday morning of previous week and Monday morning next week.

I was fortunate to get a valuation date quickly, but from the date the valuation took place, it took another 2 days to issue the offer. So, 5 working days from application to Mortgage Offer. Once the offer is signed, then the solicitors are instructed.

I did not have the most straight forward circumstances so I was totally wowed by the speed. Specially, when I didn’t get such a turn-around even when employing a Mortgage Broker in the past for conventional mortgage. Tell you what, you really don’t need a Mortgage Adviser if Shazia is fortunately assigned to deal with your application. Save yourself a grand or 2 avoiding a Mortgage Broker for Gatehouse.

My main contention to go with Gatehouse Bank was the speed of the process as per reviews. I was almost in 2 minds and considered Stride-up for the speed as their speed was really good when I contacted them. However, the cost difference didn’t justify the change in mind so I stuck to Gatehouse and it was a good decision. The Bank must have significantly updated their systems, put more resources and equipped competent colleagues like Shazia to do their job efficiently as my application was a quick responded one.

Yes, the bank does ask for a lot of information and it has frustrated me. This is not to be confused with that these questions are coming from the Bank colleagues (in my case Shazia). Shazia explained me well that she is asking all these indepth questions because a) the application form requires and b) the underwriter otherwise will raise queries on these matters and this will delay the process.

While it may feel waste of time, I really found the pre-application process of submitting documents for vetting, very useful. This bit takes place after Decision in Principle but before paying for application. There was no charge for this pre-assessment that but the sheer amount of work Shaz and her colleagues did at this stage before the application without me having to pay yet, was truly helpful. It is almost as if they were setting me up for success. Nevertheless, I did voice my frustration to the colleagues during the process about the amount of info requested and it was being requested in drip by drip.

I truly understand why customers like me choose Gatehouse or Stride-up. I am impressed with the motivation of such customers who left competitive mortgage interest rates of high-street due to riba and opted for Gatehouse and Stride-up for alternative finance. One must have such courage to spend almost 20 – 30% more for buying a property with alternative finance. There is an application fee, valuation fee, product fee, Early Redemption Charge plus a fee of £400 at the point of redemption. This is coupled with high solicitor’s fee as you have to instruct a solicitor that has Gatehouse in their panel. Alternative finance whether with Gatehouse or Stride-up is no where near competitive.

Gatehouse is an option in market and it is a choice you are unlikely to regret. Certainly, I know I didn’t regret. If avoiding interest based mortgage is essential, certainly give Gatehouse a try. I certainly found very speedy response for my application.

We applied our BTL mortgage from Gatehouse and Suzette Brivett did an amazing job through out the process. Recommended Gatehouse to all from the 5 star experience we had. Thanks Suzette for all of your support.
