Title: Concerning citizenship and birthplace screening
I applied for a Remote Sales Development Representative position through HireLATAM. During the application process, I was specifically asked whether I hold a U.S. passport and whether I was born in Colombia and currently reside there.
I found these questions concerning because citizenship and place of birth are different from a candidate’s current residence, qualifications, and ability to perform the job. I have extensive experience living and working in Latin America and believe candidates should be evaluated based on their professional qualifications and legitimate work-location requirements—not where they were born or which passport they hold.
After receiving a generic rejection, I contacted HireLATAM and requested written clarification regarding whether my U.S. citizenship affected the decision and what legal, contractual, or compliance requirement justified the screening question. As of the date of this review, I have not received a substantive explanation.
I am sharing my experience so other applicants are aware of these screening questions and can request clarification themselves. I will update this review if HireLATAM provides a clear explanation or resolves my concern.
