I am writing about my interaction with Dr Vidya psychologist. An interaction that helped me change my thoughts about what is best for my daughter . Like any other parents - I am concerned about the well-being of my daughter - Khushi .
Being a doctor I was watching ted talk of famous Doctor - Dr Atul Gawande - who has written few books like checklist , complications etc . He was talking of COACHING and its importance in life . We all know that in sports there is a coach who teaches the best players - Even Sachin Tendulkar - the best bats man in the world has a coach for him . He talked about how he requested a Rtd surgeon to coach him during his surgery .
Normally after completing our course in medical practise - doctors never ever go for coaching - we go for training in college or workshop - but is never under the eyes of a coach who observes us.
I was having issues with my daughter’s academics and her social behaviour. so I thought to reconnect with Srivadya again. She did her aptitude assessment two years back which helped me choose subject of her interest. My intention was to review Khushi and guide her and me on how to move forward am I on right track or need to review my decision .
In the initial interaction with her I requested Ms Srividya (psychologist) to review Khushi and guide how can she open up and be more acceptable to the society and improve in academics and in life. To me it looks she is going back to cacoon and avoiding meeting or making friends as now she was all alone in her room with no friends to talk to. My daughter who was first yr student of an esteemed university in south - was facing issues .
She started talking to Khushi at weekly interval had interactions with her where she tried to understand Khushi and give her ideas to interact with other students.
My worry about her studies were also there - liberal arts was a new subject and coping with it and living all alone in hostel was not at all easy for her. I knew very well that the study she is pursuing - even though difficult has not much industry backing - it’s more on academics and needs very hard work . Liberal arts is a very good subject with people who has passion for it .but Khushi it was like just another subject where she was unaware why is she reading it. In times to come she opted for sociology - I wished if she would have opted for media studies - as it has industry backup . -but she was not comfortable with media studies - was not enjoying it and does not want to pursue as major in it.
I Got the opportunity to visit Delhi and took this opportunity to have face to face interaction so .i requested for a appointment with Sri vidya Ma’am - the psychologist who has taken Khushi’s psychological assessment- I requested for an appointment from her and got the appointment.I wished to know how can I help Khushi do better in life.
We had an interaction with her - myself and mywife both of us were there in her office - we spend around 90 mins with her. When we started reviewing my daughters strength and weakness - came to know that she is more sensitive , judging organiser and can work with people in pleasant working area and is less futuristic - means it will be difficult for her to study subjects like- logic and argument in addition to maths. Sociology is a subject which essentially require skills to calculate for future and do research - to do study of man and society - and probably it was not meant for her .
So decided to take a call - and move from high pressure academic college to a place where she can enjoy her self and has an industry backup . Where after completing course even average student can have more job openings or can opt for entrepreneurship.
If she changes her stream and do good in life or at least better .
I would like to thank Srividya Ma’am for helping us take a decision - which hope will make difference in my daughters life . I would like to end by famous line from Robert Frost -“I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference”.
