Doesn't care about EU customers!
Owlcrate does not care about their EU customers. This is incredibly clear by the fact that even after repeated issues for EU customers getting charged VAT on delivery in spite of paying at checkout, Owlcrate refuses to take responsibility for the mistakes they are making which cause this and have done nothing to prevent it from happening again.
I had several purchases from them which all made it through customs without issue, so I hoped that the problems they are known for with this were in the past. Until January, when one of my orders got stuck in customs. I first spoke to the postal service and showed them my receipt from Owlcrate which showed I paid VAT at purchase. They replied and said with the IOSS system, it is the sender (Owlcrate)'s responsibility to submit the electronic file with the correct information. I then wrote to Owlcrate support, and ELEVEN days later, support replied and shared an invoice with their IOSS number on it. I tried sending this to my postal service, who then replied and let me know Owlcrate/their shipping partner had put the IOSS in the wrong field and it was not able to be fixed after the fact. This is pretty clearly a mistake made by Owlcrate/their shipping partner.
After multiple WEEKS of back and forth with 5-7 day delays between responses, Owlcrate refuses to even refund the VAT amount I paid twice (which is around €2 in total excluding the processing fees, so objectively a small amount) and even worse, insists they always file their customs forms accurately and do not have any issues on their end. This is objectively false - I order from multiple non-EU special edition book boxes, and I get shipments from all of them regularly. Not a single one of them, except for Owlcrate, has a reputation of mismanaged IOSS submissions. Not a single one of them, except for Owlcrate, has led me to have to pay for customs on arrival. Not a single one of them, except for Owlcrate, has the postal service explicitly stated the shipper submitted the customs form wrong.
The absolute lack of accountability is abhorrent. The 5+ day wait time between responses is abhorrent. The insistence that they have made no mistakes, to the point they have added a page to their FAQ about this (which again indicates how frequently this occurs), is abhorrent. This does not happen with other book boxes! I have gotten more orders total from The Broken Binding, Fairyloot, and Illumicrate, yet not once have I ever incurred a request for customs from anyone but Owlcrate. Check Reddit and social media and the first thing you'll see if people are talking about Owlcrate is how they mismanage their customs reporting, leading to EU buyers getting double VAT charges.
Owlcrate does not care about their EU customers. If they did, they would be doing more to rectify this problem by, for starters, ACKNOWLEDGING it is a problem. Until that time, I heavily recommend against purchasing from Owlcrate if you are not based in the US.

I’m super impressed with their customer service and their commitment to the quality of their books!

Useless Advent Calendar
I ordered an advent calendar in October, as a present for my daughter. I didn't get the advent calendar until December 20th and then of course it was a useless gift. It took so long to arrive, I had even forgotten I ordered it and had gotten her a different calendar. Owl Crate refused the return, despite it being their fault for it taking ten weeks to be delivered on a time sedative item.
Stellar Customer Service
I wanted to shout out the customer service team, and specifically Tara. Tara was very prompt in getting back to me and always wrote in a kind and professional manner while helping me replace a book that had been a bit banged up on arrival. She went above and beyond the call of duty, and I really cannot thank her or the Owlcrate team enough. Also, the quality of support I received really was incredible especially considering this all was going down on the busiest time of year. Thank you Tara!
Good replacement policy for damages~
Ordered from OwlCrate for the first time recently during their $10 book sale.
Shipping was quite expensive, but I appreciate that they include taxes when you pay, so there are no courier service fees on top of the taxes when the package gets processed through customs.
I do think the packaging could have been better, though. Some combination of the books being too heavy, there being too much empty space in the box, and the journey from the states to me in Canada resulted in my order arriving in a partially crushed box.
So there were more imperfections to the books than I'd typically be happy with. But being a leftovers sale, I'm more inclined to forgive dents and minor damages. Still, there were a couple books that had more extensive issues, and when I contacted customer service, they offered me the option of a replacement or 200 points ($10 store credit).
I definitely would've been happier to get the books in better condition to begin with, but I am satisfied with their service and would order from them again.
Charged but Never Shipped- never head back from them
I placed an order on September 10, 2025, and my card was charged the next day. It was supposed to ship around the 20th, but it has never been fulfilled. Despite reaching out 4–5 times, I’ve received no response at all. To make matters worse, they are now trying to charge my card for the next month’s box even though I never received the first one. This feels very fraudulent. Until they fix their fulfillment and communication, I strongly recommend avoiding this subscription.

Bullied and Banned
OwlCrate has an app that book lovers can join. It’s a place to share reviews, make recommendations, and build friendships. I joined the app, at the urging of some of my fellow Booktokers, and I was greeted warmly by Moderators. I was added to their Discord server, where I was greeted warmly. Then, just after 24 hours of joining the app, I was banned. I reached out to Support to find out why I was banned. I was told that membership is at the discretion of the moderators. These are the same moderators who welcomed me, invited me to a live author discussion, and added me to Discord. These moderators banned me without explanation. I did not violate their rules. I didn’t say anything against any members. I am being bullied!
Company Got Greedy.
I've been subscribed to Owlcrate for several years, and it's started to severely go downhill. They hiked up the prices for it claiming shipping and production costs, dropped the quality of their products (like a tote bag whose strap was attached via a plastic keychain clip that wasn't meant to ever hold weight), and removed the spoiler / info cards and replaced them with QR codes on the boxes that only work half the time, are up for less than a month, and then the info is gone. When myself and other customers voiced our concerns about the removal of the cards, we were told they would NEVER come back due to Owlcrate attempting to 'cut back on paper waste' - and yet, they pack their boxes with shredded paper. Books are bound with several printing errors all the time, customer service is iffy, and this box just is not worth the price anymore. The company has gotten very, very greedy, and no longer cares about its subscribers.
Lastly, they held a giveaway for store credit for people who left them 5 star reviews awhile back, so their ratings are incredibly skewed.

Nunca tive estresse com a Owlcrate mesmo morando no Brasil. Meus pedidos foram basicamente livros e boxes limitadas então não posso comentar sobre o que acho da inscrição mensal, mas posso dizer com certeza que a Owlcrate é uma das poucas lojas literárias de fora na qual eu realmente confio em comprar.
Teve uma vez que não respondi os correios à tempo e houve a devolução do pedido à Owlcrate (eu quase tive um infarto, sinceramente) mas o atendimento ao cliente deles é incrível e tomaram um tempo para efetuar o reenvio e me ajudar com todos os problemas referentes às entregas.

Inappropriate for YA
We have had a subscription to OwlCrate for over 3 years but will no longer be a customer. We have overlooked the late deliveries and sometimes disappointing boxes because overall our daughter loved getting the subscription. However, September's book was incredibly inappropriate for young readers. We reached out to OwlCrate for a solution and were told if we didn't like, we could donate the book. We will not be donating a book whose audience is YA but discusses inappropriate subject matter for young readers. Our subscription will also not be renewed.

Won't be trusting this company again.
I brought the six of crows with goodies from them based on other goodies they've produced from the same book series and I was incredible disappointed, I got a small plastic bag of coffee with a sticker and a cheap candle and I can't have coffee due to my bodies reaction and I have a heart condition, and I struggle with scents so a candle was unusable for me. Owlcrate's choice was a copy and pasted message they've then other (I've spoken to others who have brought the same goodies). For a while they tried hiding the bad reviews from their website only letting in 5 star reviews but after a few days they've decided to let the review through. When producing the goodies, they chose low quality products and stuff that didn't have much reference to the fandom. All they've said is that in the future they'll do better, they don't care for us their current consumers and haven't made any efforts to apologise, just come up with excuses to due restrictions, even though they managed to make a lovely shadow and bone box. All they have in insincere copy and pasted fake apologies that doesn't actually really apologise for their actions just how we feel. And it cost £40 on shipping and £31 on goodies, as well as the books, I regret spending that and would not have spent it if I knew what I was going to get and how owlcrate was going to react.
Every box a delightful surprise
Every box a delightful surprise! The books are gorgeous and I have found new authors with many of the boxes, tempting me to read names I've never heard of and tropes that I normally would avoid. On top of this, the goodies inside are always fun and, even if I can't use them, I know other people who would adore them... And thus let me draw them into the Owl Nest fold!

I recently purchased a large order from OwlCrate which was also my first ever purchase from the site! I absolutely loved it!! I got two past boxes and four separate books. One of the books is a pre-order and I had some confusion about the shipping receipt. I reached out to the support team and within a day they responded back and gave me a detailed answer and reassured me that my book would still arrive as scheduled! I took a large gamble ordering so many things for the first time (I generally order something small from a site for the first time to make sure quality is good and I can trust it with a large order) and my gamble paid off! The books were absolutely STUNNING and the items in the boxes were so thought out and intentional that everything fit so well! I placed another order and I’m so excited for it to come in! I definitely recommend OwlCrate, not just for the products but also for the customer service I received from them! 10/10!

I love OwlCrate, I love the items in the boxes. The books are wonderful. I would love to see stenciled edges (although) the sprayed edges are pretty too. I look forward to getting my box every month.

One for the book community! That is how feel about Owlcrate. Actively engaging in customer service and support, they offer in time response and quality! But let us talk about the books also: Owlcrate delivers exquisite book choices with beautiful aesthetics. The size of the book is just perfect for any hand size, with perfect sprayed edges and amazing dust jackets.

My favorite book box subscription and the one I started with way back in the day and wish I could have kept. But I'm glad to be back! All the picks so far have been great, the goodies included in the YA box are always fun, and the CS team have always been quick to reply with an issue. <3 Love OC.
Something for everyone!
I’ve been a subscriber since Dec 2023 and have yet to be disappointed! Books are always unique and beautifully designed. Author engagement on the nest is always fun and exciting. And on the rare occasion that something isn’t right, customer service is responsive and helpful. I firmly believe the variety here means there’s a little something for everyone! (Also the copper foil on Foul Days???? STUNNING and im obsessed)
