Got a Librem 5 Linux phone from them, and later also a Librem 14 laptop around a year ago. Good experience overall - they shipped the phone after 2 weeks, and the laptop within a month.

The Librem 5 is an awesome phone if you truly value freedom and privacy - you have complete control just like a computer (which it is). I came from a degoogled / F-Droid / FOSS-only ecosystem (no closed-source apps) so I don't really need to run Android apps using Waydroid, but I did test it out of of curiosity. As the phosh UI on PureOS Byzantium is quite old, I flashed PureOS Crimson (Alpha) last year, and then moved to postmarketOS stable (phosh) recently. Distrohopping on phone, yes!

Purism is apparently doing the modem firmware upgrade before shipping orders, as I already had latest firmware with VoLTE enabled. It's working with Vodafone Australia after the 3G shutdown - not sure about Telstra or others.

To be completely honest, there are some challenges daily driving the Librem 5 compared to even degoogled Android, but pretty easy for even a genuine N00B like me to overcome:

- Limited battery life: I have chargers in the house and in the car, plus I carry a small power bank.
- Heat: The CPU (not battery) makes the device warm like any laptop , but auto-suspend helps with cooling. In may car, I mount it over the AC/fan vent during summer.
- No data notifications (e.g. email, Signal, Matrix) in suspend mode (like any computer even Windows or Apple), so I use auto-suspend only when I don't absolutely need Signal calls and messages.
- Camera quality: Like a phone from 10 years ago - doesn't matter to me but I know it's a big deal for others. It also saves the RAW images so you can later get high quality images by post-processing them on a computer. Tried with Darktable, but then swtiched to Shotwell as it's much simpler.
- GPS works OK with PureMaps but sometimes it's not reliable. I keep my old degoogled Pixel with Organic Maps from F-Droid as a backup which can be used offline without a SIM.
- The 3rd-party postmarketOS (even the stable branch) can feel a bit buggy sometimes compared to the default PureOS, so I don't usually jump on major upgrades as soon as they're released.

The Librem 14 laptop is powerful enough for everyday tasks: web browsing, email, LibreOffice, chatting on Signal, web apps using Brave Browser - I'm even able to do some video editing using OpenShot from Flathub even though it does not have dedicated graphics. PureOS (like Debian) has old software in its repos, but Purism provides instructions to add Flathub FOSS for up-to-date apps. Currently, I have occasionally battery detection issue that Support said was fixed in a firmware update, but I haven't gotten around to doing that yet.

Also, it looks like they take on average 1-2 weeks to reply to emails! May be it depends on the type of request or they are getting too many support emails, understaffed, etc...?

GNU/Linux desktop is 100% ready for widespread adoption by normal users, and Linux vendors like Purism make this easy with no need for ISO burning on USB and all that hassle. Linux phone on the other hand could become ready for mainstream with a more optimization of the software and upgraded hardware perhaps when the Librem 5 version 2 FIR comes out.

I hope to also get their newer Librem 16 laptop once it's out as long as Intel management engine is disabled. The main thing they could do to improve the Librem series is to add a GPU option with Open Source drivers.

I only wish I could give purism a no star review. I ordered the Lebrem 5 in July 2021 and have still not received it late 2025.
This company has no shame, they routinely Email me to invest every 6 months or so knowing it stolen the money I paid for a 2021 phone that even if shipped 4 years later. Would be years behind today's bottom of the barrel phones?
If you search anywhere online or YouTube, you will only find dissatisfied customers. Unless their the paid influencers, misleading the public for financial gain. Stay clear of this company, maybe buy a PinePhone for far less cost of the Lebrem 5 but you will actually receive it.
I only wish I would of did my research before handing over my money.

Great tech support and fast. Librem Mini is the best desktop on the market. I will be buying another one this spring. Some complain about back orders, I suggest buy what they have in stock or can build, or call them to check inventory before ordering. Thanks

I placed an order with Purism back in September 2020. It's now been four years of waiting with no product, only delays, and empty promises. I've repeatedly reached out to their customer service, but they either don’t respond or give misleading updates that go nowhere.

Not only did they fail to deliver, but I’ve since moved, and they still haven’t provided any realistic information on the shipment or a refund. Trusting this company was a huge mistake, and I feel my money has been stolen. They took my payment and vanished—don’t waste your money or time on this company.

Stay away if you value your hard-earned money.

Ordered a phone in March 2021, and they did not deliver the phone. That's it - basically, you give them money, and they ignore you.

And yeah, trustpilot, the experience is still ongoing...

Ordered my phone in 2021, have been strung along for 3 years and now Purism wont even respond to my emails. I have paid in full, have evidence of that, have emails back and forth saying they are going to ship the phone and nothing. Now I dont even get a response back to my request to either refund my money or ship the phone. DO NOT BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE THEY ARE LEGIT.

Two Years of waiting, no contact, no return of the $1400.00 owed. All items return with receipt for proof. This started in Aug. of 2022. this will continue till Purism refunds all owed, I would be happy to say Purism conducted business fairly. But this is where we are. As you search for your electronic, save time and money by conducting with business with highly rated company's. One star needed to post.

Got my Librem 5 about a year ago. Awesome phone just getting better as time goes with new updates as promised.
Only negative thing for me is that battery life is a little bit short, but it maybe get better with new updates.

Bought a Librem 15 version 4.
- Battery life was never longer than 5min.
- Couldn't get part numbers, or replacement parts from Purism.
- Multiple hardware failures in the first two years.
- Impossible to repair due to lack of replacement parts.
- Lack of knowledge about the laptop despite having apparently designed the hardware.

After one year the battery went down. I contacted purism support to solve the issues. We tried, but the result was that we needed to change the battery. The problem is that Purism does not sell batteries outside of US, so I can't buy a battery to make my 1500 euros laptop work.
I find it very unfair that Purism sells laptops outside of US without selling parts that can breaks. Like the battery in my specific case.

I ordered a Librem 5 5 year ago. I have not received the phone. They refuse to refund the money. They do not respond to mail or text. May they ingest excrement and expire.

Hands off Purism! I ordered a Purism Phone in April 2021. Every year I asked where it was. As Purism had still not delivered the Librem 5 by March 2024, I asked for a refund of the purchase price. The company refuses to give me a refund and keeps making empty promises.

Bought and paid for the Laptop and Phone at the end of 2018...I received the laptop in 2020, absolute rubbish, keyboard was faulty and within a month it would not switch on.... I received the phone at the end of 2022 and it won't charge or turn on... Rubbish scam company with rubbish staff... when you can't comment on their videos you know something is very wrong... when you see that the "Team" section in the Purism website has been removed, you know something is very wrong.... AVOID PURISM, save your money and go elsewhere....

Complete Scam

Purism is a complete scam, don't ever order any of their products. I cannot even say if the product is decent or if it even exists.

I received numerous emails promising a refund for a product they never shipped. Unfortunately, I gave them over 2K back in 2020 for a laptop. In 2022 I received an email stating that my refund would be received during the second half of May, 2022. They kept stringing me along and never paid me back. I suspect this company is either out of business or in bad financial condition to treat their customers this way.

My last communication with them was in February of this year. I suspect they would just keep stringing me along and never refund me for the laptop I purchased. I even informed them I would be OK receiving the laptop instead of a refund but still no response.

This is a company to avoid at all costs. There are several other vendors I have turned too for linux laptops including System 76.

They take your money, don't allow you to cancel until the product is shipping, which never happens. I've been waiting 2+ years and still nothing. I think the company is a scam. They recently got back to me and said they couldn't give me money back but can give me credit... which I could only use for other backorder products that will probably also never come. (facepalm)

Order from 2019 refund request:

Sadly, we do not process any refunds at the moment (not just pre-orders), but we do offer two other options. One is to get the phone which you have pre-ordered (we could ship it within several business days). Another is to receive a store credit +20% gratitude on top of the amount paid.
As I do not have any timeline for the refund. All the information I currently have indicates it will not be processed any time soon. I'm very sorry and wish I had a better answer for you.
Still they put me on hold and never wanna pay back my 599 dollars

I bought a mini PC from these people and later I decided to cancel the order, when they had only sent the key. I told them that they could keep the key and the expenses of the anti-interdection, but that they would give me back the mini money. They abruptly broke the communications and stopped answering me. I made a claim with Visa that has not yielded any results despite the fact that, supposedly, they guarantee the security of the purchase. Now, three months later, I don't have the mini, nor the key, nor have they returned my money. 1,317$. So that you keep it in mind before buying

I ordered and received a BENQ monitor and had an excellent experience. It's been the best value and quality I've had to date over HP, Dell and LG.

Doesn't care about contracts, but just does what they want. Changes terms one-sidedly.
Refuses to refund my money although that option has been in their own policy at the time of my order.

I purchased a Purism Liberty phone on 9/7/23.

I paid $2407.94 for the phone including the shipping.

I received the phone some time after 9/20/24.

I contacted Straight Talk - reseller of A T & T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. After purchasing a sim card for Verizon, I was told by their tech support that this phone was NOT compatible with anyone of the major carriers mentioned.

I then observed reviews of others expressing that they could NOT obtain phone service on a practical level utilizing the Purism phone.

I then took the Purism Liberty phone to A T & T, where an experienced customer service technician installed an A T & T sim card and ran a test to see if the Purism Liberty phone would operate in conjunction with the A T & T network to provide reasonable phone service.

The experienced technician clarified that the Purism Liberty phone would not provide functional phone service with the A T & T network particularly with the recent 5 G updates.

I sent e-mails to Purism tech support requesting an RMA denoting the fact that the phone did not provide the opportunity for phone service through the major carriers like A T & T and Verizon in my area, and that they did not alert me to such concerns prior to purchase. They acknowledged the disparity and injustice, but, I was told they could not provide a refund at this time, which was within the 30 days of the purchase date.

I filed a dispute with my bank. Purism's bank took the money back claiming they have a policy of NO RETURNS.

Purism took $2407.94 of my money and sent me a phone that does NOT provide reasonable phone service with any of the major telecommunications carriers such as Verizon or A T & T in my area.

I learned the hard way that you have to thoroughly check the reviews before you purchase through anyone.

It is a sad reality that there are those out there who will take your hard earned money and give you nothing of value in return.

We must always be wary that there are those out there who are poised to take advantage of well meaning trusting people.

It is very sad and tragic that Purism has taken advantage of me the way they have. Let this be a lesson to all.
