Accuracy. Timeliness. Platform numbers in advance of changing trains. Ease of booking. Easy to find e-ticket. Good reminders and each journey segment was added neatly and precisely to my diary.

Tickets too!

It came as a surprise to me that I could buy tickets using Railboard, I had previously only used it for planning journeys which it is exceptionally good for. As it happens the train I booked for had a mechanical issue and never showed up. The next train did make it though.

Excellent app which is very well designed

Excellent app which provides all the information about rail travel that you need, and is simple and straightforward to use to purchase tickets. The app has been very thoughtfully developed and has lots of very elegant touches in its implementation. The only thing that would improve it is to be able to easily purchase a specific type of ticket such as an off-peak day return to London terminals, or a Travelcard, without having to specify both the outbound and return trains, but I know this is there to make sure that the ticket type is correct.

And thank you for the feedback too! We’ve made a note of it; how feasible it is to do in practice somewhat depends on the rules we have to follow when selling tickets. But it’s still useful to understand what people want.

Very nice system to use


Railboard is a very nice system to use. It keeps your railcard stored, so you don’t need to re‑enter anything, and the layout is clearer than some other apps, though broadly similar. I tend to use both Railboard and Trainline. Railboard can be cheaper — sometimes even cheaper than the operator’s own app. Railboard is clear and easy to read and use.
Rail fares behave a bit like quantum physics: they’re here, they’re there, they jump up, down, and shake about. But Railboard makes the whole thing human‑friendly.

Crashed while buying a ticket

Crashed while buying a ticket. Bought one at the station instead. Realised a few days later I’d paid for both.

Hi Eliot,

Sorry if there was a technical issue that occurred during the booking process. It's quite possible it was due to a poor network connection, not allowing the app to receive the final confirmation of purchase.

I can see the booking confirmation and e-ticket emails were both sent 2 seconds after the booking was completed, and that we received confirmation they were delivered correctly 2 seconds after that.

So, given that you presumably didn't see those emails come through (or else you wouldn't have bought a ticket at the station), that does somewhat suggest the network connection was poor right around the time of booking.

Also lending credence to that theory is that our crash monitoring tool didn't see any app crashes around the time of your booking (or in the days after). And same for the the monitoring of crashes and unexpected behaviour in the logs for the backend too.

I'm very sorry for the annoyance and extra cost this has caused. But if such a network connectivity issue does occur (assuming that's what this problem was) right at the moment the confirmation of purchase would be sent through, and the customer doesn't or isn't able to re-check the app after or check their emails, then there's not much we can do. Sorry.

Sorry to hear you couldn't make all your connections because of a late train.

As you were likely more than 15 minutes late, we recommend looking into claiming Delay Repay compensation for your journey. If you message our Customer Support team, they'll be able to help you do that.

As for Railboard, we do our best to make the ticket buying and train tracking experiences as good as they can possibly be. But we don't run the actual trains, so that part is outside of our control.

But still, it's always annoying when you have so much disruption to your journey. So we can certainly empathise with your frustration here.

Excellent for tracking and buying

Railboard has always been a first-class train tracking app, and its relatively new ticket purchase experience is just as excellent. Easy to manage bookings with no fees and Apple Wallet integration too

There are engineering works on the Arun


There are engineering works on the Arun Valley line. The app wrongly showed the service as cancelled when in fact one half of the route (which splits) remained open.

Hi Daniel,

So you're right, there is a discrepancy between the actual trains running along the Arun Valley line and what Railboard is showing when you go to buy a ticket. Specifically, some running trains are not showing in the Planner when buying tickets.

What's happening is Network Rail have enacted a speed restriction between Horsham and Barnham, because of the summer heat affecting the track. As a result, Southern have been operating a revised timetable on the Arun Valley line.

The way Southern have implemented this new timetable is by cancelling the previous services and adding replacement services. However, for the most part, both the cancellations and the replacement services are only being entered into National Rail's real-time information system (which Railboard uses for the 'Live trains' tab); they are not being entered into Network Rail's industry train planning system, which is the source of timetable information that licensed ticket retailers are given and accredited against.

The net result: when using the Planner to buy tickets, we cannot show or sell tickets for those replacement services.

So the train you saw as cancelled when buying a ticket was indeed a cancelled timetabled train, but its replacement service was not showing, because Southern only added it to the real-time system that the ‘Live trains’ tab uses, not to the industry train planning system the Planner uses when searching for tickets.

Ultimately, for this issue to be fixed, Southern needs to enter the replacement services into the industry train planning system too, and with enough notice for them to appear in the timetables retailers use when selling tickets.

I'm very sorry for the annoyance and any possible confusion this has caused. Even if it sounds like you personally were savvy enough to realise there were running trains not being shown in the Planner.

When selling tickets, we have to work from the industry timetable data that retailers are given. That leaves us at the mercy of train operating companies following the correct procedures when entering the data into the systems. They nearly always do, so it's usually not an issue. This situation is somewhat of an aberration.

As an elderly person who is not very


As an elderly person who is not very confident using apps i found the booking process very easy via the railboard app.It made the experience so easy when the e ticket popped up for the on the day of travel outward bound and again on my return.
