During a cold and wet scramble along the Lake Districts Helvellyn mountain in 1967, Derek Laxton hit upon inspiration for a technical range of thermal underwear.
With a trained mechanical engineer background and a lust to run his own company, in 1969 Sub Zero Technology was created. From their original Leicester Textile Mill, the Sub Zero Factor 1 range of thermal base layers was born to worldwide acclaim.
In the five decades since, Sub Zero have expanded their range to include heavy weight thermal mid layers through to insulating down jackets. Never a company to stand still, Sub Zero have adopted new manufacturing processes, such as seamless knitting technology and body mapping, to produce garments that are at the pinnacle of performance.
Sub Zero today is still family owned, with the third generation of Laxtons running the company. The factory and offices now reside in rural Leicestershire, with the workforce coming from the local communities. Sub Zeros work ethos is still true today as it was form its interception - to design and manufacture technical outdoor clothing using the finest technical textiles for the words most extreme conditions.

Reliably great
My latest order from Sub Zero arrived promptly, and just as expected. A couple of warm technical thermals for winter (one from their discounted sub-standard stock, not that it has anything noticeably wrong), and a waterproof map-case.
Great service, and superb products (with base layers made in the UK), thoroughly recommended.

Thank you for your review. The Factor 1 top you bought is great in this in-between weather we are currently experiencing. You may want to look at layering it with our Factor 2 mid range range once winter really starts to take hold.
Factor 2 Plus zip tops - UNBEATABLE!
Factor 2 Plus zip top. Very warm and breathable, extremely comfortable with flat seams, long sleeves and close fit. Use mine in preference to my merino tops as the Factor 2 Plus tops are lighter and warmer. Also, my older Factor 2 tops have proved very durable and long lasting compared to merino. Factor 2 Plus and Factor are unbeatable base and mid layers. Mike

Thank you Chris for the fantastic endorsement of our Factor 1 base layers. It's a real shame we are ending this line, but we just cannot get the fabric finished anymore to our high standards. The Factor 1 Plus that replaces them are actually a little bit warmer, so you might want to try these next.

We're happy to help Paul. The Factor 1 Eco base layers do take some time to get used to as the fabric and fit edges more towards a mid layer, but I've been wearing one for a few months now and they work really well.

Thank you so much for the five star review. The Factor 1 Plus base layers you bought are brilliant, but you may want to look at layering a Factor 2 over them if going out in severe cold weather.

I ordered a meraklon "neck tube". Basically like a buff but different material. Meraklon as I understand it is a polyester fabric with very high wicking properties, I have a couple of baselayer tops made from meraklon, great for running in colder weather. What I got was a "thick buff" made from sweatshirt material!
Not what I ordered at all.
Won't be ordering from this company again.

We are very sorry that you do not like our Meraklon neck tube. Meraklon is in fact a polypropylene yarn. We use worsted spun Meraklon as it provides a thicker fabric that we can brush lightly on the inner face to give greater insulation properties. It will be warmer than the fabric used in your base layers, but it will still have the high wicking rate you require. I will email you over a returns form with a postage paid address included so you can send the Meraklon neck tube to us for a full refund.

Would recommend for purchasing wind proof jacket. Certainly value for money.

Made in UK - hurray. Good quality socks. I ordered walking socks and bamboo socks to use as liners. Really pleased with them all. Arrived quickly. Competitive price for good quality walking stuff

It's great to hear you love our socks. We try very hard to source products we cannot make in our own factory from other UK manufacturers. These socks are made just down the road from us.
They are worth the price
Quick postage. Love your seconds area you guys must be picky, I struggle to find anything out of place on any type of clearance stock. We wear your factor 2 thermals for under bike leathers never go cold even in Scottish winter. Plenty long enough in arms and body to allow for loads of movement without the dreaded draft at the base of your back. The first lot we bought 5 years ago are still going strong. Wash and dry really well and as they dry so quick, I've never felt the need to put them in the tumble dryer.
