Ridiculously expensive for what it is


Ridiculously expensive for what it is considering we have never made a claim on the policy and we aren’t in an area that ever gets flooded. We are being penalised because our property is thatched.

We completely understand that the cost of insuring a thatched property can sometimes feel frustrating, particularly if you have never had to make a claim. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon for owners of thatched homes, as insurers assess risk based on construction type rather than individual claims history.
As a broker, we do not set the premiums ourselves. Our role is to search the market and negotiate with insurers to secure the best possible terms for our customers.
Having reviewed your file, I can see that when you first joined us two years ago we successfully negotiated a saving of over £200. At your renewal last year, we were able to offer a solution to secure a further reduction of £180 compared with their initial renewal premium.
Because those negotiated discounts have been maintained each year and there were no competitive alternatives available in the market at the time, there was unfortunately little more we could do to secure an additional reduction this year.
Situations like this are not isolated, and we genuinely sympathise with homeowners facing rising insurance costs. What we can assure you is that we remain committed to negotiating with insurers and reviewing the market at every renewal to ensure our customers continue to receive the most competitive terms available. In fact, over 97% of our customers choose to renew their policies with us each year.

Thank goodness for Thatch Cover

The professional advice given by Holly on the end of a phone to help fill out the extensive paperwork relating to a thatched property gave me confidence that I had not missed anything that could affect the cover. The price was great too.

I'd just bought my first thatched listed house. I knew I needed buildings insurance, but beyond that I was a complete novice, having only bought insurance for more modern homes. I called Thatch Cover and talked to Tom. He spent 45 minutes on the phone, taking me through the intricacies of insuring a thatched property with active chimneys, what information I needed to supply, and what questions to ask the thatcher. Two days later, I had the quote, which was the cheapest I had found from 5 different brokers. The day after that, I had my insurance.

I can't speak highly enough of the whole team's knowledge, patience with a novice like me, and commitment to getting me insured. If you need insurance for a thatched house, start here.

Saved me ££££'s

Lewis at Thatchcover helped me get a quote that saved me around £1400 after my home insurance provider upped our renewal by £800. Lewis was professional and very helpful. I'm so pleased with how easy the process was, as thatch insurance can be quite stressful to renew.
