The communication for resolving a customs problem

I’ve purchased some clothing and some accessories and I am really pleased with them.
Further enquiries about future purchases were handled quickly and professionally by customer services.
Overall a great experience.

Disappointing experience with an international suit purchase and return

We purchased a full suit from Walker Slater for my partner and unfortunately had an extremely disappointing experience, particularly with the product description, international return process, and customer service.

The website states that the trousers are “lined to the knee.” One of the primary reasons this mattered to us is that my partner has very sensitive skin, and we specifically wanted lined trousers because of the wool fabric. When the suit arrived, we discovered that the lining was only on the front portion of the trousers and, on him, extended to approximately mid-thigh. When I contacted Walker Slater about this, they sent photos explaining that the trousers are only lined in the front.

While that may technically be how they construct their trousers, I do not think describing them simply as “lined to the knee” gives an online customer an accurate understanding of what they are purchasing. Had we known the extent of the lining beforehand, we likely would not have ordered the suit. The exposed wool caused immediate skin irritation, making the trousers unsuitable for him despite the fact that we genuinely liked the suit otherwise.

Unfortunately, the return process has been even more frustrating.

For an international purchase, we had already spent nearly $400 in shipping and associated costs to receive the order. Walker Slater would provide a return label if we were exchanging the suit, but because we needed to return it, we were expected to arrange and pay for the international return ourselves. Between shipping and the potential taxes and fees involved, we were looking at spending hundreds more simply to return the suit. At that point, the combined shipping and return expenses were approaching the cost of the suit itself.

We followed their return process and created an RMA for the entire suit, with all items unworn/as-new with tags. Their own international return instructions provide specific guidance regarding customs declarations, including marking parcels as returned goods. Yet when our return subsequently became held in UK customs, the assistance we received was essentially an email telling us to contact Royal Mail ourselves and “arrange for the parcel to be cleared.”

The link they provided for assistance did not even work, and there was no meaningful explanation of what customs required, why the parcel was being held, or what Walker Slater needed from us to facilitate its return. For an international retailer that regularly ships products overseas and has its own international return instructions, I expected considerably more assistance navigating a customs issue involving merchandise being returned directly to them.

What makes this especially disappointing is that we actually liked the suit. This was not a case of simply disliking the clothing. The trousers were unsuitable because of the limited lining, and what should have been a straightforward return has turned into an expensive and unnecessarily difficult process.

Based on this experience, I would not recommend ordering from Walker Slater internationally unless you are completely certain you will be keeping your purchase. International customers should be aware of how expensive and complicated a return can become and how little assistance they may receive if something goes wrong.

I was so pleased with the help provided. I appreciated the help finding my correct size and the matching pants. My only regret was that the suit colors I wanted (all 3) sold out in my size while I was trying to find my size. If there was a sizing guide online wih information about the measurements and US-UK sizing conversions that would have been avoided and I would have had the solar suit that I preferred. However, it was lovely corresponding with Virginia and she was quite helpful.
