Bait and switch on condition of '89 Lafite
Purchased a $650 bottle of '89 Lafite that arrived with a clearly protruding cork; this was never disclosed; contacted them 3 times to seek exchange or credit and absolutely no response; may go to court for Deceptive Trade Practices; have been a collector for 40 years
Average Wine Enthusiast BEWARE
Thanks to winebid.com I have an established (specific) wine collection of my dreams...
EXCEPTIONS!!! Please read
During the last auction, Winebid continually extended an auction where I was the clear winner against an organization that resells their inventory through them instead of allowing me the win and eventual purchase!
Winebid lost me for life after nearly $5000 in purchases....
Great wines at a great value
Winebid has been a wonderful experience for me. I have found many of my favorite producers at prices much lower than retail (including buyers premium & shipping). Added bonus that I get things with 5+ years of age on them, which i very much enjoy!
I see lots of haters here who prob don't understand how auctions work. It's not nearly as complex or intimidating as people make it out to be. Shipping does cost extra, but once you get 6 bottles of more, it's quite reasonable.
Honestly
Honestly, WineBid has been solid for finding older vintages I canât get locally. The site feels a bit dated, and filtering through 10,000+ lots can be tricky, but the inventory is legit. Iâve snagged some great older cabernets that arrived in good condition. Shipping isn't cheap, but the packaging is secure, so Iâve never had a broken bottle. Itâs definitely addictive checking the auctions on Sunday nights, so just watch your budget.
Great for Unique Vintage Wines
WineBid is a great place to go when you are looking for unique vintage wines that won't break the bank (you can buy expensive wines too!) I find really cool wines with age that I can't find elsewhere on WineBid. I recommend to anyone looking for unique, fun wines! Also, a great place to purchase wines when studying for WSET!
Sellers: Seller Beware
Sellers:
I use auctions for wine purchases almost exclusively but selling my wine on consignment with an auction house is new to me. There are about eight auction sites that I use. I approached WineBid about consigning an initial sale of 4 cases of âpedigreeâ wines.
After going through the contract that was sent to me to sign I thought that it would be important and necessary to look at the contracts offered by other auction houses.
The contract was so bad from WineBid that only an idiot would sign such an agreement. Sorry to those that have entered into the agreement - the preceeding sentence was only meant to emphasis how wholly âcompany orientedâ the WineBid contract is and how terribly stacked against the seller.
I will not break down the points of the contract in this communication however, I will say that the contract is unfavorable for the seller and is beneath the industry standards.
I must comment on the low rated reviews; The low reviews are mostly coming from people that did not read the contract and entered into a very lopsided agreement with WineBid. I say this because there were repeated complaints about the 30 Day wait period to receive proceeds from the sale(s). {BTW - The 30 day wait period is very fair and necessary}. The 30 day wait period is some very basic information provided in the âWineBid Sellers Agreementâ. It is not a secret - in fact, nothing is a secret. All the information in the âWineBid Sellers Agreementâ is clear. This is why I DID NOT engage with WineBid as a seller. The contract can become a nightmare for a seller. Obviously I did not read ALL of the reviews but one of the reviews described the need for an attorney to wade through the aftermath of a poor experience with WineBid. Please understand that I am not blowing my own horn when I say that after reading the 'Agreementâ I was able to see how such a scenario could become a real possibility.
I deemed the âAgreementâ to be so bad that I find it impossible to be able to trust WineBid as a consignment source. I mean that just as I have stated; WineBid is not to be trusted as a source for sellers.
READ THE CONTRACT - if you are unable to understand the terms of the contract have a trusted and qualified source review the contract with you.
FYI - I will remain a buyer with WineBid. I like the (buyerâs) format that is WineBid and I have never had any shipping issues with WineBid (I am on the East Coast). The only undrinkable wine I have received is wine that I purchased knowing it was suspect at point of purchase and I was willing to take a chance. It makes for good pasta sauce :). The provenance has been good on the buying side.
Recommendation: 1) Buy from WineBid when you run across wine that you love and it is a bargain or otherwise hard to find. 2) Steer clear as a seller until they modify their âWineBid Sellerâs Agreementâ and become more seller oriented and less greedy. Right now they are preying upon the sellers that do not READ THE CONTRACT. They will be forced to modify the agreement if they cannot attract sellers and retain sales force.
Warning to everyone!!
Warning to everyone!!! Donât do business with Winebid. Use anybody else. They are currently holding my money hostage and have shut down my online account. I canât get access and the company wonât reply to my emails to resolve. Frozen out and I now will need to get a lawyer involved which is just going to cost me money and time. Trust me you donât want to sell your wine here.
If I could give no stars I would
Yikes!!! If I could give no stars I would. Decided to do a trial with this company with two high end bottles - one didnât sell and the other sold with only one bid at a ridiculous low reserve that they set. They then took an 18% commission on the bad sale and then charged me a 10% fee to return the bottle that didnât sell. I also just learned they donât pay you your proceeds for a month. Yes 30 daysâŠthatâs so wrong we all know why old scam to make money on your money. Isnât that illegal? I lost big agreeing to go with Winebid. Wish I never saw there advertising online. At least I can warn others. Also, Horrible customer service. Worst auction house ever. Go anywhere else.
Several of my last few orders eitherâŠ
Several of my last few orders either never arrived or required several phone calls. Fedex does the shipping and they will either say that we tried to deliver but no one was home (always untrue) or we delivered it. When I called winebid to complain they told me it was my responsibility to pick up the wine from fedex myself. They offered no assistance and basically said that they believed fedex, not me. From what i can tell, this has happened to several customers. They used to be reputable. Not any more. I wont use them again and I would not recommend anyone else do. There are more reliable ways to get your wine.
Bought a case of wine from them fewâŠ
Bought a case of wine from them few years ago without any problems so tried them again. Extremely disappointed by customer service -treated me like an idiot, offered no explanation or support for troubleshooting delays to delivery and rudely cut the phone off saying that I was arguing unnecessarily
Bid and bought a Justin IsoscelesâŠ
Bid and bought a Justin Isosceles Reserve from them. They charged me for it but never sent the wine. When asked no response was given. I paid for the wine but never received it. I would never buy wine from this site. Besides you are actually getting gouged. There are much better sites to buy wine from, including older wines.
Best place for old wine, even if not perfect
The markup is more than I think is fair, but they are up front about it. It's always risky buying "used" wine, but it also allows me to buy older stuff. Overall, there's no better place to procure old wines and often at a good value.
Purchased a 2004 Leoville Las cases onâŠ
Purchased a 2004 Leoville Las cases on their site they sent me a completely different bottle of wine and now tell me they never had the correct bottle that was pictured on their website and they offered me the ability to keep the one they sent me for full price or they will send me a shipping label and hold my funds until I return the other one. The customer service rep made me feel like it was my fault somehow and they donât need to take any responsibility for their screw ups. Never again.
Poor customer service
More of a FedEx problem than a Winebid problem however had i known they would be shipping via FedEx I'd have made different arrangements.
For wine deliveries I use a UPS address as I'm rarely at home to accept shipments. I paid to have the wine shipped and upon arriving in Portland FedEx returned it to Winebid in Napa without using the phone number in my FedEx profile to contact me.
I just called Winebid and the CS person that I'll have to pay again to have the wine shipped, offered no other solution
I'll probably just let the wine stay there and be done with it.
edit: I later called the shipping arm of Winebid and they listened to and understood my problem. They also agreed to re-ship the wine at no further expense to me.
Having said all this I cannot recommend buying wine through Winebid. It might look like a bargain but it's not...it's expensive. Plus many reviews speak of having been sold fake wine. Sadly this is a big issue these days.
I know this because I'm in the business of selling fine wine. Buy locally or from a distributor, forget the middle man.
Actually great
Not sure what it is with all the hate. For most of the bottles I buy, it's a great steal. Their customer service is so on point and helpful with everything. I had an issue with a shipment and they fixed it in under an hour. I don't buy crazy expensive bottles but generally find great deals. At least the website is upfront with the premium, most places will just put it into the price and not actually tell you. Only your first bid they have a pre-authorization and the charges were dropped after I won. It is not a big deal. Overall it is a great website, with some awesome deals, and amazing customer service.
Loose loose situation
Loose loose situation. You buy wine from them and pay 17% premium plus tax and high shipping charges. You sell the same wine and again pay 9% commission plus 1% insurance. Wow!! Such a rip off!! Oh!! And they hold the fund for 30 days.ð
Good experience, but way higher then FMV
I've always had good experiences with Winebid with bidding and shipping. For lower priced wines under $300, you will still pay a premium through Winebid. But for higher priced collector wines, sellers set their minimum bid at current fair market value or slightly higher. In other words, sellers are really listing their wine for sale at current (or even higher) fair market value (which already considers the cost of auction fees). Tack on the Winebid 17% buyer fee and you're paying way more than professional auction houses who appropriately set starting bids lower....i.e., so it's an auction, not a sale plus 17%. Anyone who buys at Winebid for investment should seriously reconsider their thought process.
Counterfeit concern
I buy from winebid.com very often, maybe every week and expensive wines.
My concern is the counterfeit wines. I'm not saying that I have noticed anything wrong, but I'm concerned how good and how carefully their specialists are looking at the wines.
How do they make sure that the wine are legit?
Other than this concern,I'm happy with winebid..
I have had only a single (last!)âŠ
I have had only a single (last!) experience with WineBid, buying from a couple of auctions and then arranging "temperature controlled" shipping.
The issue is that the wine came A WEEK EARLIER than they indicated when arranging shipping! Early is good, right? Not when you're out of the country and arranged a shipping date based on when they told me it would arrive.
I emailed them and it took DAYS to get a response while the wine sat in a hot warehouse baking. I asked for a refund and they said no because "the wine arrived when expected" except -- (i) the wine never arrived (it was undelivered and returned to sender), and (ii) it was expected a WEEK LATER.
"Molly" of customer service was neither understanding nor polite.
Some of the wine in the shipment was 50 years old so shipping conditions and timeliness matter. But apparently those things (and customers) don't matter much to Wine Bid.
I have been buying from Winebid.comâŠ
I have been buying from Winebid.com since 1999 and have bought approximately 100 bottles, all for investment. Excellent selection and for the most part good prices. My only suggestion to those who want to bid is to actually check what the average auction prices are to get a true sense of what real pricing is. I also utilize Pricing data © Liv-ex. I love the filters and the pictures and descriptions have been spot on compared to what I receive.
One more thing, when I review all of my past purchases the buy prices are only listed from about 2007 and on. I was told that there was a data migration and that there was a "cutoff" point. I work in IT (software development) and they could have archived the data under a HIST table. Unfortunately I did not track my BUY prices and cannot get a true pic of the % change.
Keep up the good work!!!
