A Better, place to be...
I've been visiting Better, at Highbury Leisure Centre for a couple of months now, having left my previous gym after 15 years.
As a sexagenarian, the subsidised rates for the elderly (??? - lol), are excellent, and certainly promote attendance. Thank you, Better!
Most of the staff appear generally happy to be there (no place of work is perfect, sadly, and we all have off-day’s), but a special shout out to lovely Francis, Alfred, Rahim, and Dimitrios the manager, all of whom make me feel thoroughly welcome every time I visit. Those listed are not just effective Team Members, but they’re also thoroughly nice people too!
The equipment is well maintained and plentiful, so a wait is rarely required to use your preferred means of exertion.
Changing rooms can sometimes feel a little school like in their size/structure, and are often wet, if not sodden as users very often don't dry off properly before leaving the showers. This can make it a bit of a contortion when trying to keep clothes dry, especially socks when you’re changing.
Cleanliness is excellent, with the staff being highly receptive, and indeed reactive when informed of an issue, I.e., blocked toilet/spillage e
My only real criticism as regards Better (the brand), is that entry to the facilities closes 40 minutes before the gym actually closes. Given that paid membership, this no matter how reasonable, effectively constitutes a contract of use in English law, prohibiting me from accessing those paid-for facilities prior to the end of their business day, say for a quick shower 20 minutes before official closure, could be arguable, if not actually contestable as regards legality.
Finally, having been an active member of a 'Place of Pain' for about 35 years now, I have to say the demographic that frequents Highbury Leisure Centre, is truly bewildering, if not actually weird. Some members appear to possess a permanent scowl whilst working-out, prehaps having forgotten that they’re actually paying to be there. I smile, repeatedly, no doubt helped by the dopamine and serotonin released whilst there but then for me, Cardio is King!
Gym etiquette is also generally very poor, with bags often being taken onto the floor even though there are multiple signs instructing members to use lockers for their personal items. The regular incidence of loud animated conversations both in person, and on the telling-bone, is also highly distracting, if not just plain inconsiderate, and rude.
Overall, Better, Highbury Leisure Centre; is a generally nice gym; staffed by generally nice people; often visited by generally nice members, though with some notable exceptions.

There is no many instructors around to…
There is no many instructors around to ask about machines.
There are too many people sitting idle on the machines while just browsing there mobiles; not the most encouraging image!!!!
The gym helps me to increase my mobility following a total knee replacement but don't feel confident enough to use other machines -aside from the ones suggested by physiotherapist at hospital - because of lack of instructors to provide guidence

First day at this centre
First day at this centre. Well, probably not the warmest welcome I’ve ever had, especially after mentioning that it was my first time…
Then the lockers are a bit old-school, as you need a £1 coin (which I didn’t know, and I didn’t have one). I had to go back to reception, where I was told I could buy a token… thanks! In the end, the lady agreed to lend me one after I explained that I wasn’t aware of this system. But honestly, considering the membership price, you’d expect more modern lockers (with a code).
My gym session went well. There wasn’t much waiting for the machines. Everything seems to be in good condition and clean. I had the chance to chat with a staff member in the gym area, and that was very positive.
The changing rooms are decent too. Note that there’s no soap in the showers (again, given the membership price… it could have been included…).
Overall, it was a first day of discovering and getting settled, which in the end went well.
We’ll see how it goes in the future…

Trainers and customers quitting Better due to horrendous fake rip off music
I can't believe that customers were not consulted at all about the decision to stop playing authentic music at all Better gyms from March 2026. As a social enterprise, it is deeply sad that Better has actively chosen to avoid paying royalties to musicians and instead chosen to pay for fake rip offs. At best, this seems misaligned with Better's social values and at worst, immoral. It is having a huge negative impact on the enjoyment of exercise classes and I am aware of several trainers and customers who already have or are planning to quit. There must be better ways to save money. Please reverse this awful decision

We’re aware that there has been some concern and confusion about the changes to music licensing in our fitness classes from this Spring.
In late 2025 we became aware that the cost of our current music license that covers all our 250 leisure centres and gyms across the UK would increase significantly. As a charitable social enterprise focused on community benefit, we carefully reviewed our options to ensure we continue to invest our resources responsibly and sustainably.
Following this review, we asked our fitness instructors to transition to PPL pre-cleared, royalty-free music. This approach allows us to manage rising costs while continuing to deliver the high-quality classes you expect.
In practical terms, all instructors are being provided with free access to Power Music; one of the most widely used fitness music platforms. Power Music enables instructors to create their own playlists using professionally recorded studio tracks (not AI-generated), giving them flexibility while ensuring full compliance with licensing requirements.
We hope this provides reassurance and clarity about why we have made this decision, the care we have taken to engage with and support our instructors and our commitment to maintaining your class experience. As we implement these changes we will continue to monitor feedback and engage with staff and customers.
