Dealt with Kirsty @ Gillingham for a property sale as Power of Attorney. Buyer had no property to sell, we had no property to purchase. Both parties used Martin Tolhurst Solicitors, albeit different offices, as part of an arrangement with Wards Estate Agents. Instructed on 25 July and sale completed on 27 August. An efficient, professional & quick experience which is much appreciated.

Sarah at Martin Tolhurst was always on hand to answer questions during a very difficult time when sorting out my late father's estate. She was particularly patient and understanding when faced with the problems caused by family members who did not always agree. Would definitely recommend!

The purchase of my property was a rather long process, taking over 10 months and as a first time buyer I found my initial contact with the solicitor appointed to me difficult as I tried to understand the process and what I had to do. I didn't always feel supported or listened to. However, as soon as Richard Carter took over my case, I felt in much safer hands. I was communicated with, I understood what I needed to do and I felt able to reach out to Richard if I had any problems. I also found his secretary, Heidi Gray to be very approachable, helpful and efficient even if I asked some silly questions! If I had had Richard looking after my conveyancing from the beginning I would have given five stars, it's only the first few months of dealing with another solicitor within the company and feeling left rather adrift at times which has made my score lower.

If you are looking for a caring, compassionate, and understanding Solicitors, I can’t recommend Martin Tolhurst enough. This is the company I would use everytime.

My partner and I were recommended to this firm by selling agents who have a referral arrangement with MT. We were very impressed with the file opening/client ID process and initial communications but it all went downhill from there. This was a straightforward sale of a rental property to first time buyers with a mortgage offer, no chain and a house without complications. It took 5 months to arrive at completion, which I believe was far too long given that friends have recently completed, in chain transactions, with numerous issues, in 7 weeks. I had to chase for updates and information from start to finish. There were long delays during which our conveyancer (whom I don’t think it’s fair to name) appeared to do little or nothing to press or chase the seller’s solicitors. Had it not been for me and the Purchaser doing as much as we could to move matters along, I think we would have waited longer to complete. There were mistakes in the paperwork, suggesting a lack of attention to detail e.g. advising on redemption of a mortgage when there wasn’t one. Additionally, I was asked to produce documents supplied at the outset, suggesting that what I had sent had not been noted or considered. It may be that the conveyancer had a very heavy workload and struggled to keep up, in which case there was a failure of supervision somewhere. I have bought and sold a number of properties and used to be a solicitor myself so I have a fair idea of what to expect and I’m afraid this experience fell far short.

We were very pleased with the service received, they advised ways on handling a couple of tricky points re our sale.
Communication was seamless - mainly email but by phone when needed, the portal showing progress was useful (and quite exciting!!)
They were very patient with the delays to exchange but still ensured we could complete 3 working days later.
Would highly recommend these solicitors for property transactions.

Hannah has worked with me over the past three and a half years to secure a fair divorce in very challenging circumstances. She has acted diligently and professionally throughout, always seeking the best solution for me and my children, and never once have I doubted that she has had my best interests at heart. Perhaps we don’t tell people enough what their work really achieves, but beyond the legalise, the paperwork, the contracts, there are real people in need of representation, and real consequences that extend well beyond the courtroom. I would wholeheartedly recommend Hannah Stanford – she is patient, straight-talking, knowledgeable, efficient, and she genuinely cares about her clients. What more could anyone ask for?
I would also add that she thoroughly deserves her promotion to partner at Martin Tolhurst, and not simply on the basis of her gender, in the name of positive discrimination, to “foster gender diversity and promote women in leadership positions” but because she is an extremely good solicitor and an asset to the firm.
