I have been a Pro subscriber for a couple of years. I was at Memrise language level 15 in Portuguese. Two weeks ago all my progress was lost and I was reset to the beginning. My previous progress just disappeared. This is across my workstation and mobile app and across different browsers. I did not reset my progress, and I did not instruct anyone to reset my progress. I have sent numerous support emails out but received no response from Memrise. Two year's work - gone. I am so pissed.

Edit : Contacted Memrise customer support, from an email I find on Trustpilot.. They went above and beyond to fix my problem .. Thanks Memrise for thinking outside the box to solve my subscription, appreciate it :)

Abzockerei. Erst kommen ein paar gute Kapitel wo man schnell 200 Wörter lernt,ich sage zum ködern.Dann aber fängt der Hirnfick an.Beispiel Zahlen lernen 1,5,9,3,7,10 etc,kein Mensch kann bei dem absichtlichen Chaos gut lernen.Dann kommen Kapitel mit 30 völlig verschiedenen Wörtern und Bedeutungen,dass das Gehirn streikt und man wird absichtlich so überlastet dass man selbst zuvor gelerntes wieder vergisst und ich denke das ist Absicht. Die ganze App ist darauf ausgelegt endlos zu lernen ohne zu lernen um ein Abo nach dem nächsten zu kaufen. Man könnte denken es ist Unfähigkeit,aber ich denke es ist bewusste Absicht, wenn es einfach logisch strukturiert beginnt und dann umgedreht ist.Dasselbe mit den KI Buddys.Konjungieren von Verben.Hab brasilianisch Portugiesisch gebucht und die KI konjungiert europäisch Portugiesisch, um 1 Wort zu konjugieren muss ich jedesmal 7× nachfragen bis ich endlich die Antwort bekomme, die KI ist in voller Absicht so programmiert, selbst wenn ich die KI von Anfang an bitte in brasilianisch Portugiesisch tut sie es erst nach 7× nachfragen. So verliert man die Lust zu lernen und bekommt nur die Zeit geraubt.Und zuguterletzt ständig neue Brasilianer jeder mit einem anderen Akzent,niemand der zb Deutsch lernt,lernt ein Gemisch aus Bayrisch,Hessisch, Kölsch,Berliner Dialekt etc alles durcheinander, da würde jeder fragen bei welchem Idiot hast du deutsch gelernt. Es fehlt das kontinuierliche offizielle Brasilianisch, dass man sich an 1 Ausprache gewöhnt und nicht ein Mengelmuss aus hundert verschiedenen Dialekten zusammengewürfelt in einen Topf lernt.

I started on Memrise, but other apps are way better. The real problem was when I tried to cancel. The directions they give you to cancel a subscription are not correct. I was charged for an extra year, and it's not cheap. Go with something different

Yet more illegal sales promotion tactics. On June 15th I was given a 60% off offer, expiring June 16th. Today (June 22nd, it is still available, even as it still says expiring on 16th). Obviously this is quite illegal.
Also, a note to anyone thinking of signing up. Note that later scenarios in the courses don't have any videos. So an annual or lifetime subscription do not represent as much value as you would think.

I heard a lot of good things about Memrise and thought I'd give it a try. I'm an intermediate learner but despite choosing that level, the program started giving me words like yes, no and thank you. So I changed the settings to advanced. The content was still mostly elementary - I'm a language teacher, I know what's being taught on different levels of the languages I speak and my target language, as I have been studying it for quite a while, and what was presented here was ridiculous. Then I tried picking my own topics and started with politics. I learned a few words (again, pretty basic stuff) and then the program suggested to make sentences. Of course, it complained about missing language-specific letters (I use an English keyboard and there was no on-screen option to insert those characters). But the worst was the type of sentences I was supposed to make. 'The king is reading a newspaper.' This is supposedly advanced vocabulary in politics. The next sentence was: I am drinking water. What?? Has nothing to do with politics, nor with the reviewed vocabulary, and is the most basic stuff you learn on A1. I don't know what they were thinking. Maybe it is better in some other languages, but for Polish, do yourself a favor and find another app to learn with. Even a plain dictionary would be more useful.

I used Memrise off and on for 5 years and was at the intermediate level. After 5 years, I logged on one day and was at level one. Despite multiple attempts to contact the company and correct the issue, I was unable to the correct lesson. That is a lot of time to put into learning a language then not to be able to continue your progress. I would not suggest using memrise.

After not using memrise for 4 years I noticed a payment on my CC statement. Amex said it had been authorised so I had to pay. I did go into my Memrise account and set my subscription renewal to OFF but when I logged in after receiving an email promo it had been set back to Auto renew. This is the second time this has happened.
Through Amex I have put a merchant block on Memrise and deleted my account.
Be very careful, you should not trust Memrise with your financial details. Good luck.

Bis vor dem letzten Update war Memrise brillant und hätte 5 Sterne verdient gehabt. Jetzt wird man immer wieder rausgeworfen oder das Programm macht nicht bei der nächsten Lektion weiter, sondern bringt einen auf Umwege. Unterwegs ist die app nicht mehr zu gebrauchen, da das Hören der Worte wegen „Verbindung abgebrochen“ entfällt. Das funktionierte bis vor einigen Monaten alles noch und jetzt leider nicht mehr.

Die App funktioniert nicht, wie sie soll. Wenn ich Vokabeln wiederholen möchte, dann ist es oft nicht möglich, die Aussprache zu hören. Mal klappt es, mal klappt es nicht. Der Service sagt, ich soll die App deinstallieren, das Handy neustarten und dann die App wieder installieren. Das hab ich gemacht, es hat sich nichts geändert. Ich habe leider die Version „Auf Lebenszeit“ gekauft. Soetwas werde ich nie wieder tun.

I have been looking for a free alternative to Duolingo as the 5 lives piss me off, and memrise was the answer! I especially love the exercises the bot gives you. So worth it!

Ich versuche seid Tagen mein Memrise Pro Abo zu kündigen, da ich nicht länger Spanisch lernen will und kann.
Es gelingt mir nicht in den Menüpunkten die Stelle zu finden, wo man sein Abo kündigen kann. Die automatischen Mails sind nicht hilfreich, da sie immer wieder die gleichen Hilfen anbieten, aber ich trotzdem nicht kündigen kann. Ich finde das Absurd und nicht seriös. Das Program mag ja zum Sprachenlernen gut zu sein, aber diese Versuche einer Kündigung sind absolut nervig!!!

I love the App!

I have tried a number of apps and sites to learn Spanish. I recently gave Memrise a shot as they had a sale on and I liked the sound of the methods they use. I have to say it really suits me and I am really enjoying the app and feel like I am making progress with a clear path of progress. I am surprised to read so many negative reviews and cannot comment on previous versions. Things I like:

1. Easy to pick up and do a session in 5 minutes or so.
2. Fun choice of different tests.
3. Measures every word you are learning and learned so you can see your words learned list grow.
4. Good selection of AI to test sentence structure, grammar etc.
5. Wide choice of languages including Welsh.
6. Native speakers and video.
7. Just super fun and addictive.
Definitely my favourite language learning app. I find myself using it all the time when I have a spare couple of minutes, sure beats mindless scrolling. Very well designed. I am excited to see this grow as the AI also develops. This is not a paid review and entirely independent in case anyone is wondering. I just really really like this app.

Not as good as it use to be. My son use to access the community courses which was tailored to GCSE’s and with the old learning structure it was easy to learn, repeating words, it was such a good set up. I wanted to start learning as well as he did so I signed up an account for myself. The learning structure has completely changed and it’s become the same learning structure as Dulingo which isn’t as good. So disappointing, not so easy to learn and I can’t access community courses. They’ve completely destroyed what was a good learning platform. I would probably be better off using Seneca now.

Seit der Entfernung der Community Kurse kann ich Memrise nicht mehr empfehlen. Das Verhalten von Memrise gegenüber den zahlenden Abonnenten kann ich ich nur als unseriös empfinden. Die guten Bewertungen in den App Stores beziehen sich größtenteils auf die alte App mit vollem Funktionsumfang, der mittlerweile zum Nachteil der Nutzer reduziert wurde.

The concept is great. The main lessons are great, but the rest just does not work. I feel like I am testing à program for them. AI repetition. Wrong language, crashes, bugs. Worse still I spend half my time correcting membots grammar mistakes. To begin with I found it fun, but paying for something that is not fit for purpose. No. Oh and god forbid you insult AI, you get put in the naughty corner…..so frustrating. It’s has such great potential but they need to fix all the issues before taking customers money.

J’ai commencé l’espagnol avec Babbel, une application que j’avais payée chère , mais je galérais : le système ne me convenait pas. Après avoir exposé mes difficultés à ChatGPT, il m’a conseillé Memrise. J’ai alors payé l’abonnement, et j’en suis ravi ! En seulement cinq semaines, je suis passé au niveau 13. Je connais plus de 500 mots et je maîtrise la conjugaison de tous les verbes utiles à l’indicatif présent.

Je m’entraîne aussi avec un outil d’intelligence artificielle que me propose Memrise, il donne des thèmes pour rédiger des dialogues. Bien sûr, je fais encore des fautes d’orthographe et de syntaxe, mais mes textes restent compréhensibles — un peu comme ce qui faisait le charme de Jane Birkin pour les plus anciens . Cependant, je regrette que l’IA se contente de corriger mes erreurs sans m’offrir un réel suivi de progression, aucun feed back!

Fort de cet apprentissage, je suis retourné sur Babbel et cette fois, j’ai cartonné ! L’avantage de Babbel, ce sont ses cours en ligne avec un professeur. Finalement, je trouve les deux applications très complémentaires. Certes, elles représentent un investissement, mais c’est un choix que j’assume pleinement. Buena suerte !

I am literally heartbroken - mems are gone :(
I used Memrise about 10 years ago to learn country capitals. It was such fun, and I succeeded in learning them all through the excellent pedagogical techniques Memrise used - mostly the mems; user created and in invaluable tool for memory using images and image descriptions. I've re-started now that my kids have flown the nest and I have more time. Have been so excited to start. Why are the mems gone? Can I get a copy of them?

Ich habe seit Februar 2020 Memrise für Japanisch und ich habe die App immer gerne genutzt. Sehr nützlich war die App, um vorallem am Anfang Hiragana und Katakana lesen zu lernen und später vorallem für den Wortschatz zu erweitern.
Man hatte eine klare Ordnung und ich wusste immer, wo ich welche Vokabeln zu finden hatte. Ich habe sogar die Proversion und immer gerne dafür bezahlt.
Seit dem Update hat sich wirklich einiges getan, aber für mich ist es leider ein einziges Chaos und mir ist die Lust leider vergangen. Die Video-Sequenzen, die KI Konversation sind wirklich ganz cool. Aber ich bin mir nicht sicher ob ich dafür noch Zahlen möchte. Wer neu einsteigt und nicht schon so einen Fortschritt hatte, wird die App mit Sicherheit gut finden.

Die Vokabelliste ist unendlich lang und anscheinend nicht mehr in Kapitel unterteilt. Für mich ist alles eine einzige sucherei...
Wurden Vokabeln in Kanji geschrieben und man wusste die Lesung nicht mehr, konnte man die Vokabeln auswählen und sie wurden in Hiragana und Romaji geschrieben. Leider geht das nun auch nicht mehr. Ich kann nicht mal schnell nachgucken, sonder muss gleich eine Übung dazu machen...
Ich Versuche es immer wieder mit der App, aber nach 5 min bin ich genervt und mach sie wieder aus. Denke das Geld werd ich mir in Zukunft lieber sparen 😕
