As Europe’s largest conservation charity, we look after nature, beauty and history for everyone to enjoy. We do it with the help of millions of members, volunteers, staff and donors. Without this, we couldn’t care for the miles of coastline, woodlands, countryside and the hundreds of historic buildings, gardens and precious collections we protect. Your support keeps nature and history flourishing. You help us care for: - More than 780 miles of coastline - More than 250,000 hectares of land - More than 500 historic houses, castles, parks, and gardens - Nearly a million works of art In 1895, our founders, Octavia Hill, Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley pledged to preserve our historic and natural places. Their aim was not only to save important sites, but to open them up for everyone to enjoy. They created the National Trust, and more than 125 years later, their mission is at the heart of everything we do. We protect and care for places so people and nature can thrive. Many millions share the belief that nature, beauty and history are for everyone. So we look after the nation’s coastline, historic sites, countryside and green spaces, ensuring everyone benefits. From wild and precious places to the world outside your window the National Trust offers access, enjoyment and a chance for everyone to help out. Nature and the historic environment are under threat. They’re essential to everyone, they enrich people’s lives and are part of the fabric of society and they urgently need more care. Our shared places stretch across the nation, from Lizard Point in Cornwall, to Lindisfarne in Northumberland and Florence Court in Northern Ireland. As well as looking after the places in our care, we work with communities and partners across the nations to protect nature, beauty and history in towns, cities, villages and countryside.

Paying for parking at Compton Bay

Paying for parking at Compton Bay, Isle of Wight. A total nightmare. If you don’t have phone signal you’re stuffed. And when I managed to get enough signal to call the number on the notice board I was told I couldn’t pay via phone because my mobile number wasn’t registered but I couldn’t register it because I didn’t have any signal! Whatever happened to machine that accept coins and cards?

Two other people left complaining because they couldn’t pay for parking either.

Not good for the National Trust or the Isle of Wight ☹

Hi Jane,

Thank you for taking the time to review.

I'm sorry for the disappointing experience you had with our car parking machine at Compton Bay.

We're aware that our car park machines on the Isle of Wight need improving and we currently have a project in place to do so.

We hope that the new machines we implement will improve the experience for our supporters.

Thank you again for your feedback and valuable support.

Hidden Charges.

First of all, I really like Hardwick Hall estate. I walk through there all the time and the staff are awesome.

The refreshment area is great too. Nice clean, secure and well serviced spot that you can sit and waste an afternoon in.

Now the bad. It is totally ok to charge £6 for parking, so long as I know there is a charge. It is utterly ridiculous to park up and walk into the refreshment area to be stopped by a couple of nice gentlemen and asked to pay per occupant of the car. There is no signage anywhere in the car park to tell you this is expected and also no signs I could see that the whole place shuts at 16.30. I winced at the £12 for three ice creams but that is expected, the car parking charge was not.

I think I will enjoy my expensive ice creams from somewhere else.

**AFTER THE FIRST REPLY FROM CHRIS ***

I write

"There is no signage anywhere in the car park to tell you this is expected"

And you reply

"We feel our signage is clear on both charges and opening hours"

Tell me where is this signage? I have walked through the car park and refreshment area over 150 times, not once have I seen a sign for £6 parking. To repeat myself, the car parking charge is fine. What is not fine is hiding the fact it is to be paid.

***AFTER THE SECOND REPLY FROM CHRIS ***

Your wrote:

"For clarity the £6 is not a car parking charge but the fee to enter our parklands which includes our café"

So if we want to walk up from Glapwell to get an ice cream, it will cost us £6 to get in to buy it?

Hi Big Al

Thanks for taking the time to leave your review and for your positive comments about Hardwick and our team there.

We feel our signage is clear on both charges and opening hours at visitor reception. For clarity the £6 is not a car parking charge but the fee to enter our parklands which includes our café. We’ll take your feedback on board and look to make improvements if we can.

We rely on entry fees, as well as membership subscriptions, to maintain our properties. I’m sorry you feel it’s unfair to have to pay but without such charges we simply couldn’t operate the amazing places we care for.

Thanks again for leaving your review and visiting.

I'm sorry you're disappointed by some of our work.

The word “woke” seems to mean different things to different people so it’s hard to comment on that specifically.

Our work is always guided by our purpose which is to promote the preservation of nature and history for everyone, and we want to make everyone feels welcome.

We don’t necessarily expect everyone to be interested in everything we do, and that’s ok. Different people want different things from their membership. We haven’t stopped doing all the things that made you join in the first place, we’re just doing other things as well.

Very disappointing

Visited Cotehele to see the Daffodils and very disappointed. Hardly any Daffodils around the grounds and the very small display inside the building was also disappointing. £51 entry for 3 adults and no concessions for OAPs is a huge amount to fork out. The annual membership is massive and only affordable to the rich. The cafe was also disappointing with only 2 sandwiches and no vegan choices. We had jacket potatoes which were very small with hardly any toppings and a feeble side salad. Also very expensive. An expensive and disappointing few hours.

Hi Maria,

Thank you for taking the time to review.

I'm sorry you had a disappointing visit to Cotehele.

Due to this being an outdoor seasonal event we do need to rely on the weather to ensure a good display of daffodils, so some years may be better than others. The recent frost we experienced in the days leading up to the festival did not go in our favour, but now the sunshine has been out for the a couple of days we are starting to see more daffodils appear in our gardens. As well as other spring delights such as our magnolias.

I'm sorry you also find our prices to be too high. We understand that there are still many pressures on people’s finances at this time. This year’s prices reflect the continually rising costs of the materials, utilities and labour needed to maintain the day to day running of our places and to conserve them to the highest standards. They also account for the cost of conserving our historic buildings.

I've ensured your comments have been shared with the relevant teams.

Thank you for your feedback and valuable support.

Kind regards

I'm sorry you were disappointed by your experience. Our places often become very busy as the weather improves, and at popular times of the year like Christmas and Easter. It can cause difficulties in our car parks.

Hi mj gladders, thanks for taking the time to leave a review.

I’m sorry you found it difficult to park at Wentworth Castle Gardens recently. We do have an overflow carpark, however it’s on the grass hill next to the main carpark. Unfortunately, because of the wet weather recently, we can’t let visitors park in the overflow car park at the moment. Despite two layers of reinforcement, the ground is too wet and boggy to park on. When the ground is so wet, it can lead to dangerous conditions when people are leaving. It also runs the risk of cars getting stuck in the mud. I’m afraid on 2nd March, we didn’t have a choice but to close the overflow car park. I’m sorry that this impacted your visit, and I hope we can welcome you back again in the future for a repeat visit.

Thanks again for taking the time to leave a review, and for your support.

In December 2024 I order a NT gift

In December 2024 I order a NT gift membership for my daughter and her partner. Temporary cards were emailed to me along with the promise to send the membership pack and actual cards shortly. By 1st March no cards had been received. I phoned NT to find out what was happening. I was irritated and remain concerned about what I was told:

1) I was told the issue was caused by me because I had only entered my incomplete postal address information! I objected because I think that is highly unlikely. I take care with my information, especially online.

2) I was told I had also entered only partial postal address information for my daughter! Again I think that is unlikely and certainly don’t believe I would have repeated the same type of error.

3) NT does have all my correct address information anyway, because I’m a member and it used my email address to tell me it was processing my gift application!

4) NT is legally required to have adequate, up to date and accurate personal information when processing but doesn’t appear to have done that. It must also have appropriate technical and management processes in place, and regularly test those, to ensure only lawful processing of personal data happens. It doesn’t appear to have done that either.

5) NT didn’t check or validate my information when processing or allowed it do become corrupted. Neither of which is acceptable.

Hopefully my daughter will receive her cards (oddly she has received other mail from NT) without further delay. I remain concerned however that personal data is not kept secure and is unnecessarily exposed to loss and corruption. NT please urgently review your systems and procedures.

This site lost my text twice

This site lost my text twice, they are not making it easy to leave feedback...

National Trust family membership was £83 in 2016, raised to £169 in Mar 2025 - way above official rate of inflation.
Do we get more services along with inflated prices? I don't think so. Properties only got older and dustier, cafe food is still mostly unhealthy and even more expensive, children playgrounds are not maintained in many places.. Blossoms are nice though - but there are other non NT parks around as well.

NT management want less visitors paying more to compensate for the loss of working families - good luck with that..

Hi Serg. Thanks for your review. I’m sorry for the disappointment in our prices. We understand there are still many pressures on people’s finances and are very grateful to those members who can continue to support us. This year’s prices reflect the continually rising costs of the materials, utilities and labour needed to maintain the day to day running and conservation of the places in our care. Unfortunately, the costs of conservation typically rise at 2-3% higher than the rate of inflation.

We review our pricing regularly to make sure that we can balance looking after historic places, green spaces and collections to the high standards they deserve with providing high quality days out for visitors. Without increasing our prices this year, we couldn’t deliver our responsibilities as a charity to look after the more than 500 historic places, 780 miles of coastline and 250,000 hectares of land in our care for the nation.

We believe that the new prices still represent fantastic value for money, particularly given the scale of our charity and the number of places that can be visited with membership. They also benchmark competitively against similar organisations and against the costs of products and services. For example, family membership at the National Trust costs the same as buying one takeaway coffee a week. At £8 a month, single adult membership is cheaper than most streaming services such as Amazon Prime and Apple TV (£8.99). Thank you for all your past support.

Hi Phil, thanks for taking the time to leave a review.

We’re aware of a recent increase in discussion on the subject of drone use on or over National Trust land. We’ve taken the opportunity to update our website to clarify our policy.

The use of drones is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority and it is a developing area which is coming under greater scrutiny. Few non-commercial users have the correct training or permission to operate drones, which creates a serious risk to our staff, volunteers, visitors, property, and wildlife. We’ve therefore adopted a strict blanket policy banning the use of drones at our sites. The only exception being contractors or staff who satisfy stringent CAA criteria, have specific insurances and have been commissioned or authorised by the Trust for a specific purpose – and in these cases the activity is strictly controlled.

The regulatory environment regarding drones is rapidly developing. We’ll continue to monitor this development and keep our position under constant review.

Website not user-friendly re: cancelling auto renewals

I want to support the National Trust, but I also expect to be able to go onto their website and cancel an auto renewal without having to go through the hassle I encountered in trying to do so. I received a letter from them telling me they will automatically take payment from my account in March. This was a surprise because I thought I had already cancelled the auto renew; however, in the letter that arrived, the wording stated: 'If you need to make any changes to your membership or do not wish to renew, please call us before March 14.' Excellent that they at least notify members before taking payment (many companies don't), but to have to phone to cancel a direct debit, seems tedious and wholly unnecessary in this day and age when you should be able to cancel an auto renewal simply. I would have been happy to restart my membership at some point in the future, but having gone through this much hassle, I'm not inclined to do so. Having said this, the person I spoke to on the phone was efficient, well-informed and provided me with excellent customer service. All I have, though, is his word that it has been cancelled. I have made a detailed record of the time and date of the call, just in case...

Awful website

For such a big organisation, their website is appalling. Trying to renew my membership online.
I logged in fine, went to the renew page, I need to log in again.
Input the same details I just used, the renew page says they can't find my details, that my email/password is incorrect, despite already logging in with the same details on the previous page.
Then it says if I previously had a 'My National Trust' account, I'll need to re-register.
Ok, so maybe that's the issue.
I go to re-register, nope, you already have an account using these details.
Ok, lets try 'forgot my password', get the password reset link, input a new password, click to submit the new password, page just refreshes. Try again, same thing.
Maybe NT don't confirm your new password has been changed, I'll try to log in using the password I just input on the password change page.
Nope, that doesn't work either.
So I cannot log in using my details, I cannot re-register using my details and I cannot change my password, so therefore I cannot renew my membership online.
And now I'm locked out of my account due to too many password attempts.
I've given up and won't be renewing.
Wonder how many customers you lose because of this...

Very poor

We have been avid NT members for many many years and still keep our membership going even though we don’t visit as often. I read recently there is a senior concession for 60 year olds (not widely advertised). Having rung up twice now over two months to alter our membership we have been told to ring again next month as it’s too late to change it this month! I feel we are being fobbed off; so once again we pay another month at the full rate. Judging by reviews read here the NT are not doing themselves any favours which is a terrible shame.

Try having just a little consideration

Try having just a little consideration for people working at the lower grades. Taking a bonus off grade 11’s because the grade 10 pay is too close. Wouldn’t occur to them to actually improve grade 10 pay to more than a few pence above minimum wage.
Try communicating with upper management! Hilarious! state of shock that you would dare to do that.
Higher management far too happy with themselves. Talk to people on lower grades! their opinion of you is low. Try to appreciate your workers a little more, would not recommend as employers under any circumstances

Hi Kath

Thanks for your comments.

We’re sorry to hear your concerns because fair pay is very important to us and over the last three years we have invested over £50 million in annual pay awards for all our staff.

As of April 2025 when the new financial year comes in, the National Living Wage will have grown by over 55% since 2018, squeezing the difference in pay between our lower grades of roles. We have a project to address this pay compression at the Trust, aiming to create more space between pay levels for different types of roles.

Two years ago, we changed how we rewarded our staff in grade 11 roles and moved to a “spot salary” system. The spot salary is negotiated annually with our trade union Prospect. Each year we ask our staff how they feel about pay levels in our annual engagement survey and we’re pleased that the number of positive responses has been improving, especially for staff in grade 11 roles, since introducing the new spot salary system.

I hope I've provided some useful information and thanks for your support.
