Hi John,

We were disappointed to read your review, especially given that you purchased your vehicle from us in April 2023—nearly two years ago. You reached out in September 2024, 17 months after purchase and after driving over 10,000 miles, to report an issue with the vehicle. Following investigations with BMW, it was determined that there may have been damage caused by water ingress.

At that time, you asked us again about the vehicle’s history, which we had already disclosed before your purchase. As previously explained, the car was a Category N write-off, a fact that was clearly advertised. At the point of sale, you were provided with two HPI reports—one from Experian (AutoTrader’s partner) and another from HPI themselves—both confirming that the car had been written off in 2021.

You also inquired about how we acquired the vehicle. While we typically do not retail vehicles with category markers, this was an exception due to its low mileage, one previous keeper, and full service history. The previous owner disclosed that the write-off was due to a rear-end collision, which aligned with our inspection findings—evidence of past repairs but no concerns about its roadworthiness. Given that you have driven the car extensively, and it has passed two separate MOTs since purchase, we believe this decision was justified.

Now, nearly two years later, you have encountered an issue and are unwilling to cover the cost of maintaining your own vehicle. While we understand that unexpected repairs can be frustrating, it is ultimately the owner’s responsibility to maintain their car over time. We were transparent about the car’s history at the time of sale, and we have fulfilled all our obligations both pre-sale and post-sale.

You previously mentioned pursuing legal action, which is, of course, your right. However, as we have not heard from you in over five months, we can only assume you received the same advice we originally provided—that we are not liable for the current issues with your vehicle. Instead, you have now chosen to leave this review.

Interestingly, three months after your last communication, the vehicle passed another MOT without a single advisory, which raises questions about claims that we 'lied' and the vehicle needs a vast amount of repairs to be roadworthy.

Once again, we are sorry to hear that you are experiencing issues, but after nearly two years and over 12,000 miles, any maintenance or repairs are now your responsibility. We wish you all the best and many more happy miles in the car you once told us you loved.

Typically, I wouldn’t give much weight to such a negative review, but being accused of being "thieves" or "conning" you is both unfair and troubling. I’d like to address the points you've raised, starting with the so-called ‘promise’ made via Motorway.

Motorway is an online auction platform where car dealers can place bids on vehicles listed by the public. The amount we bid was based on the vehicle condition you described on Motorway. At no point was a fixed price guaranteed. According to Motorway’s terms and conditions, we reserve the right to inspect the vehicle before finalizing the purchase.

Upon inspection, we found that your vehicle did not match the description provided. The ‘good cop, bad cop’ scenario you mentioned actually refers to our driver, Jim, who communicated the vehicle’s condition over the phone with our director, who then made any final decisions regarding the offer. Based on the actual condition of the vehicle, we revised our offer accordingly.

The key word here is offer. This was a revised offer based on the true condition of the vehicle, and you were under no obligation to accept it. We do not force anyone to sell us their vehicle. It is always your decision, and had you been unhappy with the revised offer, you were free to decline, and we would have walked away.

Instead, you chose to accept the revised offer, and we completed the sale with you directly. We informed Motorway of the changes to the offer, and the transaction was finalized with your consent.

To now be accused of "conning" or "robbing" you is extremely misleading and disappointing. We value transparency and fairness in all our dealings, and this review does not reflect the nature of our transaction.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your experience selling a vehicle to us. Please accept our apologies for the delayed response; we recently regained access to our Trustpilot account and are now addressing reviews.

I must admit, I was both surprised and disappointed when I came across your review. You listed your vehicle for sale on Motorway, where we successfully won the online auction to purchase it. Given the distance to your location in Scotland, we dispatched our highly trained driver, Jim, who traveled over six hours to inspect the vehicle and finalize the transaction, as outlined in Motorway’s terms.

Upon arrival, however, Jim discovered that the vehicle's condition was not as described. Tools were found in the engine bay, indicating recent work had been performed, and there was a noticeable engine rattle. Additionally, after using diagnostic equipment, fault codes related to the turbocharger were detected. We also noted areas of the bodywork that had undergone substandard repairs. Due to these undisclosed issues, we were unable to proceed with the purchase at the agreed price.

Despite this, we made you an adjusted offer reflecting the vehicle's actual condition, as we were reluctant to leave empty-handed after such a long journey. However, you chose to decline, which is entirely your prerogative, and we respected that decision by walking away without further contention.

Given these circumstances, we feel a 1-star review is not an accurate representation of our interaction. While you expressed frustration about wasting your time and incurring expenses, it was, in fact, our team that bore significant costs. Our transport expenses exceeded £300, including Jim’s return journey to the Midlands (nearly 14 hours round trip) and his wages for the day, all without completing a purchase due to the misrepresentation of the vehicle.

While we understand that not every transaction concludes successfully, it’s disappointing to receive such a low rating in this instance. We strive to ensure fair and professional dealings with every seller, and this experience was no exception.
