I really wish I’d checked the negative reviews before using ASR Gearbox Repairs. From the start, I feel I was completely misled. Their website and advertising give the impression that they have local garages and provide a straightforward, professional service. In reality, they farm the work out to garages that could be miles away — in my case, my car was taken a long distance without me being told where it was.

They charged a high towing fee, and I was shocked at how expensive the repair quote was — almost double what I later found from a reputable local garage. When I said I couldn’t afford it, they offered me just £100 for my car, which is in good body condition with low mileage. That made me feel taken advantage of.

When I decided not to go ahead with the very high quote or sell them my car, I asked where my car was so that I could arrange for it to be collected. However, they wouldn’t tell me where it was until I paid them — it honestly felt like my car was being held to ransom. They then emailed to say that if I didn’t pay that same day, they would start charging me for storage fees. However, when my recovery driver arrived to collect the car, it wasn’t even in a garage — it was parked on a public side street. They were threatening to charge me to “store” my own car on a public road, which is blatantly dishonest.

I later discovered that the garage they used was miles away and had no real connection to ASR (other than one they obviously give work to). To save money, I arranged my own recovery and repairs elsewhere, which ended up costing almost half as much as ASR’s quote. The entire experience left me feeling deceived, stressed, and out of pocket.

If I’d known how they operate, I would never have handed over my car. My advice is to avoid ASR Gearbox Repairs completely and go directly to a genuine local garage and towing company. It could save you thousands of pounds and a great deal of frustration.

Honestly have to say probably some of the best customer service I've ever received. Incredibly fast. Bearing in mind it was such a big job and professionally done. Vehicle collected and dropped back with no problems whatsoever.

Really appreciated the full disclosure of information provided when fixing my Fiat 500L. All the information was given clearly and easy to understand. I knew the parts and labour. I was provided full details of what the problem with my car. I appreciated the customer service and the updates given. My car needed extensive repairs and this was done a really good time. I’m really happy with the overall result and the straightforward process.

The Technical Adviser, Jay, was extremely helpful throughout the entire process. This repair had been ongoing for four months with a different centre, but from the very first call, Jay was reassuring and confident that the issue could be resolved. He clearly explained each step required for the fix, and his communication from start to finish was prompt and efficient. The repair was completed in under a week, and my car was conveniently delivered to my workplace. I am highly satisfied with the service and would strongly recommend Jay and the team.

From start to finish Rockie was extremely helpful and made the whole process very easy. The van was fixed and turned around quicker than expected too. I would thoroughly recommend ASR.

I honestly can’t thank ASR enough for everything they’ve done for me. From the very first call, Jay and the team were professional, patient, and genuinely caring. My car had been off the road for months due to a complicated gearbox issue, and they handled everything — diagnostics, repair, and even delivered my car to another garage for its MOT once the work was complete.

Communication was excellent throughout, and Jay always made sure I understood what was happening and what the next steps were. They treated me like a person, not just another customer, and that really stood out.

My Q5 broke down on the motorway out of nowhere with a gearbox malfunction.

Jay and the team sorted out recovery and diagnosis in a timely manner. Then once I agreed to go ahead with the work, the car was ready in 3 days, and redelivered to me in less than a week, which is pretty rare with the work needed to be done.

Special shout out to Jay for his helpful and professional approach, keeping me up to date with each and every step.

Amazing experience just had my 2009 audi q5 2.0tdi gearbox mess up and can't thank jay and the team enough! They let me know how it was getting on each day with updated and didn't do anything untill I gave them the go ahead! Great customer service and very fast work, i had my car picked up monday and delivered Thursday! And lastly there pricing is extremely fair they did there best to match and gave a better qoute then any other place !

After seeing 3 previous mechanics , i still had the same problem.

ASR thoroughly and correctly discovered the problem and also explained to me in an easy to understand way what was the problem and how it will be fixed,

There was always clear communication and above the norm service.

I cannot stress this enough...please save yourself money and stress and stay away from ASR. Unfortunately, like some others, I fell for the positive reviews on here. While I don't dispute some people may genuinely have had a good experience, for me, the entire process was awful and I have been left feeling scammed out of my money by a company with some extremely questionable practices.

* Firstly, expect the cost to increase several times and without any paperwork to tell you that. The cost changed three times for me, increasing to £3,800 from an initial "worst case" cost of "2,600 + VAT; something which several others appear to have experienced.

* The time estimates will also constantly change. While I appreciate parts can take time, the upfront promise of being kept up to date at every step of the way was not honoured. I had to constantly chase and chase and chase to get updates on when my car would be ready. Each new promise date would come around and guess what.... no car and not even a message to tell me that that would be the case. Through my cars companion app and from my own independent GPS tracker, I could see that my car sat stationary for the best part of 3 weeks on the garages forecourt. If ASR weren't ready to work on my car, they shouldn't have collected it. That's three weeks of making alternative arrangements that could have been avoided. 17 days after collection, and after yet another phone call chasing for an update, the car was immediately unlocked and moved inside the workshop at around 2pm. I then received an email the following morning at 11:49am stating that the repair had been completed and the car was ready. Considering my gearbox was supposed to have been completely stripped, rebuilt, and "thoroughly" tested, I was naturally left feeling suspicious.

It doesn't matter how many times you phone. They are all very polite, but they will not return your calls and they consistently give empty promises.

* Despite the website claiming there is a local ASR garage in your area, there isn't. ASR do not perform the repairs themselves. They are a sales centre based in London, who farm out their repairs to other garages. Whilst this isn't unusual in the motor trade, they are not transparent about that and will not disclose where your car is going. My tracking showed mine was sent to Power Gear Transmissions in Reading, which is not only not local to me in Portsmouth like their website misleads you to believe, but isn't even an area listed on their map of garages. In the first week that I believed my car was being diagnosed, it was driven away from the garage and parked on a residential street outside what I assume to be a technician's house all night, without my permission!!

On the subject of the website, it claims there are over 1,000 reviews. Well, where are they? Because there is only a 10th of that on Trustpilot, and the hyperlink on their website to leave a review is a dead end. They also claim at the bottom of their website that they have social media presence, but they don't. They're just pictures of the Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter logos.

* When my car was finally returned, the interior driver's side was covered in mud, they had unplugged my dashcam, and damaged my driver's side alloy. I showed them thorough before-and-after pictures of my car, and was offered a £60 refund, of which £20 was for an interior valet, and £40 was for an alloy refurb. £40 won't cover the cost of an alloy refurbishment, and on a £3,800 bill? Well, that's just insulting.

* The worst thing, my gearbox feels exactly the same. I had to chase for an invoice, which lacks any detail, and the "technical" report I was promised arrived two weeks after completion and is not technical in any way. I was promised pictures, a detailed diagnoses.....nothing! Just a paragraph saying along the lines of, "we found a problem and now we've fixed it". I still to this day do not know what the problem with my gearbox was or what I've paid for. For a so called "specialist" and for work of this scale, I would expect a comprehensive breakdown of work completed, specific parts used, labour hours etc.

I have subsequently decided to have my gearbox inspected by an independent specialist, who are now looking to determine if any work was actually performed.

I don't often write reviews, but I really hope this'll at least make someone think twice about using ASR. I wouldn't like for others to go through the stress and worry that I did. There are other garages out there, so please shop around first and don't take the risk, especially if you rely on your car or care about it as much as I do mine.

12/11/25, ASR offered a 50% refund, but on condition I remove this review, sign an NDA preventing me from publicly speaking about ASR, and retract any complaints to Trading Standards.
That speaks volumes...

From my very first phone call explaining my problem this has been dealt with very efficiently and with excellent product knowledge in the nicest posable way i hope i do not have to you your services again but will highly recommend you to anyone that have the same problem as me ,

I had a gearbox issue with my 2013 VW POLO, where the garage I was initially towed to quote me £10,000 for the repairs. I then contacted ASR Gearbox Repairs who picked up the car and diagnosed it free of charge (this is because I went through with the repairs, a charge applies if the repair work is not carried out, it was then delivered to me free of charge as well).

Elliot went through the potential price ranges of quotes with me when I first called, and described common issues with the DSG gearbox and their typical repair costs. Once I received the diagnosis and full quote, I approved the works and the turnaround was approximately 2-3 days as they had the parts on hand. Everything took about a week. Definitely on the pricier side, but it seems that the repairs last and are effective with OEM parts.

Elliot was extremely responsive and clear throughout the entire process, explaining the procedure and all the potential factors to consider throughout.

The whole process was all very simple. The car was picked up efficiently and the man was very helpful and polite. The repairs took a little longer than expected but apart from that the car was then redelivered quickly and again everyone was very nice.
It was reasonably expensive, as these things obviously are and you have to trust the initial diagnosis of the faults but I'm confident that I couldn't have done any better had I spent a lot of time looking elsewhere.
