I have had Atticus for several years now. Many times I've had questions and contacted their Customer Support. Every. single. time. they have been incredibly fast at responding. They have also resolved every issue, usually with only one email. And their reply always offers a "next step" just in case their suggestion doesn't solve it right away. It is refreshing to work with a company that stands behind their product.

Atticus is my favourite writing and formatting software. It is not perfect (yet) but it's obvious that the creators are working on it constantly for the usres benefeit.
And their support system is just the best!

A Game-Changer for Indie Authors

I self publish frequently before using Atticus I’ve spent thousands of dollars hiring great support on fiverr. Atticus gave me the confidence to format on my own. Once I got over the learning curve and got the hang of the easeful intuitive interface I began to soar and this is a great feeling for my creative process. Highly recommend. The price point is unbeatable too for the amount of my money I get to save formatting for myself and clients.

I had difficulty with my endnotes and other references printing out correctly in both ePUB and PDF. With their assistance, after only 2 emails, they were able to help me solve the problem, and I was able to do what I wanted to do. Super fast response to questions that were not in the FAQ section

I was having an issue for weeks when it came to exporting the PDF of my books. I kept trying everything I could to resolve the issue. I finally reached out to support for help, and within minutes they got back to me with how to fix the problem, and it worked. I wish I had done this earlier it would have saved me hours of my time.

The Atticus Customer Success team is extraordinary. They respond quickly to technical questions--sometimes within minutes! As with any new software program, there is a learning curve, and they are there to assist the user. I wrote in Word and imported my docx file into Atticus. I have not used other book writing and formatting software, so I am not qualified to compare Atticus to any competitive products. It is likely each has its advantages and disadvantages. However, ease of use is key, and with patience, practice, the help of the Atticus Customer Success team, anyone can be sccessful using the Atticus software.

Extremely convenient and a very helpful resource for authors. They make it so easy to set up and format your book in common formats such as PDF and epub. Template settings and customization options make it even more beneficial and supportive for authors.

Atticus software for formatting books feels like it was designed by people who were tired of fighting word processors instead of writing books.

Rather than treating formatting as a cosmetic afterthought, Atticus forces you to answer a more honest question: What is this content? A chapter, front matter, a reflection, a quote. Once you make that decision, the software gets out of the way and does the rest.

There’s a learning curve if you come from Word — but that curve exists because Atticus is solving a different problem. It’s not trying to mimic traditional word processing. It’s building books the way modern publishing actually works: structured, semantic, EPUB-first, and predictable.

After working through a real project, the payoff becomes obvious: clean exports, no haunted formatting, and far fewer “why did this break?” moments. Atticus doesn’t let you be sloppy — and that turns out to be a gift.

This is a tool designed by people who deeply understand both authors and publishing realities. Once the mindset clicks, it simply works.

I am not great with technology and had never been able to format my own manuscripts before. I watched the Atticus training videos before starting, and was able to master it after a few false starts. I found the help desk very responsive to the few oddball needs I have that I couldn't figure out on my own. I love being able to format my own manuscripts, and save a ton on formatting charges.

In an age where personal service is nearly non-existent, Atticus sets a new bar for tech companies. I have never failed to receive a timely response to my queries--often by a personal phone call from a REAL person. I especially appreciate it when Atticus support members admit to me they haven't been able to fix a problem yet! Their transparency and honesty set them well above their peers in the industry.

Atticus feels like it is still in beta development. Being browser based, it runs very slowly when the page count goes up. When I first started using it, it was fine, but as my book got over 80 pages, Atticus became unpleasantly slow, often taking 2-3 seconds for a typing update to show.

There are features that a person would expect a formatting application to have, such as table creation, but Atticus cannot do that. It also does not support in-line images, such as an emoji. I wanted a small thumb-tack/push-pin to highlight a text box note, but no can do.

Exporting from Atticus to docx is very poor, requiring hours to reassemble the document in docx format.

Exporting to PDF is reasonable for a publisher to use, but do not count on the pdf to be used for online reading, because some fonts are not properly embedded in the pdf.

Great and reliable product. Have completed many projects with Atticus since I purchased it 5+ years ago. The team replies promptly and clearly to any questions and concerns. Highly recommend for all self-publishers.
