Updating my previous 5* review for Fettle. First experience in Hyde Park was good, nice guys and quick turnaround, spent over £250 with new tyres.

This time I had a terrible experience.

I had a rear flat so opted to have the bike collected from work, less than a mile from the Hyde Park store. They told me the bike would be collected and taken to Colindale.

I had no say in this at the time and they didn't suggest the process would take any longer.

I got a call from the repair saying we needed to replace the tyres. I went with the same pair as last time, the Conti 5000s (wrong choice as they're actually heavier if you use tubes than their cheaper version... my bad) and agreed to the prices - £90. The guy said the tyres would arrive on Friday, this was on Wednesday, so fair enough. Although they had them in stock in Hyde Park shop the last time.

I then got an email saying the bike would be dropped off the following Thursday. That was the earliest slot. The whole process took EIGHT DAYS as opposed to the day turn around I got last time.

A bit miffed, I took a look at the receipt. £20 PER tyre change. Tyres costing £20-£30 / tyre more than my nearest central London bike store. I actually challenged this on the call as I was quickly checking prices online to compare. Mechanic said I was looking at different grade of tyres (which I wasnt) but I agreed to the prices. With the drop off and collection charge I'm dropping an extra c. £100 for the above.

So I emailed saying this is all a bit of a mickey take given the duration of time it would take. I totally understand paying someone else for doing something you cant be bothered to do, but that's usually done quickly? I'd asked for them to reply with options, clearly wanting some money off next service or w/e.

They don't reply for several days so I chase. The customer care advisor eventually emailed me back with a 'gotchya!' email saying he'd actually listened back to my phone call with the mechanic and said I'd agreed to the tyre prices on the call. As if I said anything different in my email. Completely missing the point and adding a weird intrusive and accusatory dynamic to the situation, which left a particularly sour taste.

Bike came back with a different fit (making the £250 fit I had in the summer somewhat obsolete). The seat was at a bizarre angle.

Very helpful support from both bike mechanics. Very quick service and they managed to adapt to my requests and needs. Brilliant work.

Always happy with the guys and the service at Fettle. Excellent comms, keep you updated, and swift turnaround. Recommend booking your service a day or two ahead. As they promise, my bike rides like new.

I sent my bike in for a simple gear repair. When it was returned, it had damage that needed rectifying, and on a short test ride the original issue still wasn’t fixed as the gear continued to slip.

I returned the bike again and was told the technician couldn’t find anything wrong, other than a slightly bent derailleur, which they straightened. However, once the bike was returned to me and I took it for another quick ride, there was now a constant clicking noise in one gear — something that had never happened before.

I recorded a video of the issue and sent it, along with my comments, through their online portal. The only response I received was “sure”. That was over two weeks ago. After hearing nothing further, I made a formal complaint via the contact form on their website over a week ago and still haven’t received a response.

I tried calling their main number today to raise the issue, but only got an automated message saying they were busy and would get back to me, before the call was disconnected. There was no option to leave a phone number, so I have no idea how they intend to contact me.

Based on this experience, I would strongly recommend taking your bike to a proper, reputable bicycle repair shop rather than using this company.

I left my bike in the workshop to have a puncture and the brakes fixed. Both staff members were really nice. The process and communication was very clear throughout, and I was really happy with the service. The puncture was fixed and the brakes improved too, and I was given good advice on eventually replacing the brakes. I have Gazelle bike, a slightly unusual model, so appreciated the extra effort.

Friendly and helpful staff and the service and repairs were done both swiftly and efficiently.

Super friendly staff, and made an extra effort to get my bike fixed on time! Also fixed my breaks and oiled my chain free of charge :)

The guys at Fettle Putney are always a guarantee. Been getting my bike serviced here for years now and I always get an honest quote. I had originally booked the most expensive service, but they were honest in quoting for the middle level, as the bike didn't need the more expensive one. They kept me up to date with progress, which was great. Highly recommend.

Fettle Finsbury Park is a bit tucked away, but once you’ve found it, you’ll find an organised looking workshop. This was my first visit (to fix a small problem with gears on my Brompton). The repair was super speedy and good value. Would recommend.
