When my elderly mum, living on her own, called Hemel Hempstead Drains to unblock a drain, First Local Services arrived.

They quoted a lot of money for major excavation works, without proper investigation or considering the most obvious cause.

After 4 hours of mostly digging up the floor in her home, mum suggested they look for a fat ball in the drain as they seemed unsure of what to do. A fatty deposit was then discovered, removed by hand, after which the drain was found to be clear.

They left her with a hole in her floor and a smashed electrical switch, having charged her over £3,000.

Very friendly and polite. Nothing was too much trouble, very knowledgeable and professional. Cleared blockage quickly.

Just had an engineer visit (Steve), to unblock our main drain before it goes into the street…
After a bit of detective work, checking other houses in the street etc, he deduced that the problem is in the main sewer as 6 houses in a row were all backed up.
So I am about to call Anglian Water to get them to solve the problem.

I was also not charged.

Larry was a massive help in a large and not very pleasant job that reared it's head for us at our Hotel with awful timing (as it usually goes). He worked incredibly hard and managed to solve the problem in good time given the severity and was also exceptionally kind and professional to myself, staff and any guests he needed to interact with. Highly recommend him for anyone and will likely be looking to him for future work both professionally and personally!

Service is good but unexpectedly high charge for minor work. £355 for just over 30 minutes work. Unfortunately can’t argue the cost once the work is completed. Will not use them again due to cost.

Returned home to find had a blocked toilet and water had dripped into the room below, sent a request via the website rang me within 30 mins to book to come out, was told £150 + vat per hour then £79 + vat for equipment used after the hour. Made the appointment for them to come back holiday Monday they arrived explained what had happened and first they had no signal to do the online invoice so had to give them the WiFi so they could do it, was told £150 +vat per hour and then £79 +vat for the equipment that will be used in that hour which isn't what I was told the first time I rang up. They started to look at the toilet put the snake thing down and so called cleared it then said if blocks again will need to descale toilet and pipe. They were there 15 mins flushed the loo twice and seemed ok. Then the invoice came he couldn't email it to me as had no signal even though I had given the WiFi code so should have been able to, then told me the amount of £274 to pay for the 15 mins they were here only seeing the amount on the phone screen, asked for invoice to be email across. Later that afternoon used the loo and only to find it's blocked again ring them up tue am and to be told that if they were to come out again would be £580 to descale the toilet! I said they haven't completed the job right as was still blocked and he just kept telling me on the phone that advised to revisit be £580. Well I said forget it not paying that when they haven't done the job properly in the first place. Asked for the report to be sent over via email and the invoice had also emailed them three times finally got the invoice through and the report after ringing them again. Wouldn't use them again totally ripped off and really poor customer service, a 15 min job costing £274 ridiculous when not sorted the issue. Having to sign things on the phone screen and not given time to read it and felt like had to sign it and not question anything.

Larry did a fantastic job. Worked hard to sort out our many drain blockages. Thank you so much for a first rate job.

Nothing went wrong with the work.

But a 3 hour job to unblock a drain, left us with a bill of £1000.

Do NOT use this company, absolutely day light robbery!!!

Larry was superb. Not the easiest job but he took his time to find the answer.

They quoted me two rates on the booking call: £69/hour for manual work, or £79/hour for machinery. On the day, they charged me both.

When I challenged it, I was told I was mistaken and that they "always clearly explain" their fees — though other reviews here suggest otherwise. The office manager then said she'd resolved it by listening back to the recording of my booking call. I was never told that call was being recorded, and they were now citing it as evidence against me.

So I asked for a copy. They ignored the request. I then made a formal Subject Access Request, which the law requires them to answer within one month. They ignored that too. When they later phoned to arrange a return visit — to finish the job that hadn't been done properly the first time — I asked again. "I'll send that by email soon," the office manager said. It never arrived.

I've now reported them to the Information Commissioner's Office. The recording they used to tell me I was wrong is the one thing they won't hand over, and it took a regulator's involvement before they'd even acknowledge the request. Draw your own conclusion about why.

Save yourself the trouble and go elsewhere.

Being in need of a drainage expert i "hopefully" turned to first local services who after a telephone call arranged for an engineer to call next morning between 10.00-12.00am, next morning came and upon returning from my regular dog walk at 08.55am the engineers van was sat waiting outside my property, upon speaking to the engineer he was told no time was decided or arranged upon by his office, he even said that he was given the wrong postal code of my property, so massive lack of communication at head office, but I found the engineer friendly and knowledgeable for the work that needed to be carried out on my stinky drain. I need to now recontact the engineers office to arrange for the work to be completed.
