We’re really sorry to hear about your experience and appreciate you taking the time to share the detail with us.

From what you’ve described, it sounds like you followed the correct preparation steps and achieved initial germination, which indicates the seed performed as expected at the sowing stage. However, newly established grass can still be more vulnerable during its first winter, particularly in prolonged wet conditions, as the root system is not yet as deep or resilient as an established lawn. This can sometimes result in new areas thinning or failing, even when surrounding mature grass remains unaffected.

Our Smart Lawn Seed can be sown from March to October when temperatures are suitable, and the coating is designed to help support germination by improving moisture balance. However, while this helps establishment, it cannot fully protect young grass from extended periods of waterlogging or challenging winter conditions before the roots have had sufficient time to develop.

That said, we completely understand how disappointing this is, especially when you’ve had good results with lawns in the past. This certainly isn’t the experience we want for our customers.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback, and I’m sorry to hear that you haven’t seen the results you expected.

Our Westland Lawn Feed, Weed & Moss Killer is registered for use from May to August, as this is when conditions are most suitable for the product to work effectively. Even if the lawn, weeds and moss are actively growing, cooler soil temperatures and prolonged wet weather can delay the reaction or mean the treatment doesn’t work fully.

For the best results, we would recommend applying the product again later in spring, within the approved usage window and following the on‑pack instructions. Under the right conditions, moss will usually blacken within about a week and weeds will begin to distort and die back.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, and we’re sorry to hear you’re disappointed with the compost.

Our Westland Multi-Purpose Compost with added John Innes is a peat-free compost. As part of this, it contains our BIO3 formulation, which is made up of wood fibres and composted bark. These materials are carefully blended and screened to approximately 10–15mm, meaning you may see some larger natural pieces. These are intentionally included to improve drainage and aeration, making the compost suitable for a wide range of planting uses.

That said, if what you’re seeing doesn’t seem in line with this description, we’d very much like to look into it for you. Please email us directly at customerservice@westland.com
with clear images of the compost and the QA codes from the back of the bags, so our quality team can investigate further.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, and I’m sorry to hear about the issues you’ve experienced.

The small wood pieces you’ve noticed are part of the structure of modern peat-free composts, as they help support aeration and healthy root growth.

Fungus gnats are unfortunately more prevalent nowadays, and while we do everything we can to prevent them from entering our compost bags, there are some external factors that can influence their attraction to the material and, subsequently, into the home.

For indoor plants, we would always recommend using a dedicated indoor potting mix. These blends are specifically formulated for houseplants and are proven to be far less attractive to fungus gnats, helping to minimise the risk of them appearing indoors.

We’d really like to look into your experience properly. If you’re able to contact us directly at customerservice@westland.com with some images of the compost and the QA codes from the bags, our Quality team can investigate this further.

We’re really sorry to hear how disappointed you’ve been, both with your lawn results and with the service you received from us. That’s never the experience we want for our customers.

Grass seed will often germinate within three weeks when conditions are warm and the soil is moist but well-drained. However, colder temperatures and very wet weather, like we’ve seen recently, can slow or even prevent germination. While fleece can help retain warmth and moisture, in these conditions it can unfortunately trap too much water and cause the seed to rot.

From your photos we could see some early signs of growth, so you may notice the lawn thickening up as it dries out, or fully recovering in spring. A light overseed then will help keep it healthy and even.

We did apologise for the condition in which you received the Peckish Energy Balls from the retailer and explained that, due to the timing and the way our products are sold, returning to the retailer for an exchange or refund would be the best course of action.

As a gesture of goodwill, we arranged to send you one of our Ready to Use Pre-Filled Energy Ball Feeders. Before this was sent, we did confirm in our correspondence which feeder would be provided.

I am very sorry that the goodwill feeder arrived in less than perfect condition and for any inconvenience this caused. However, as we do not sell directly to members of the public, we are unable to arrange for an alternative feeder to be sent out. Our Resolva Lawn Weedkiller is fully regulated (MAPP registered) and designed to target broadleaf weeds without harming grass when used as directed.

Overapplication can sometimes cause grass scorching, and weeds can take time to die as the active ingredients work down to the roots.

If you’d like us to look into this further, please contact us with the product details, photos of your lawn, and how and when it was applied, we’ll be happy to advise.

Westland Moss Master is a natural moss treatment, it doesn’t kill moss in the traditional sense but instead breaks it down, returning it to the soil as nutrients that support the grass. Because of this, results can sometimes appear differently to what you’d expect from a chemical moss killer. The product also has two recommended application rates depending on whether you want a gentle feed or are treating a heavier moss infestation.

We’d be happy to look into your experience in more detail and discuss how the product was applied. However, as a different moss killer has since been used, it would make it difficult for us to assess the original results with photos.

When applied at the correct rate and in the right conditions, Moss Master can be used safely without damaging the lawn. If you’d like, please get in touch with our customer service team so we can support you further.

We’re disappointed to hear that the compost did not meet your expectations in terms of texture and composition. This is not the standard we aim to deliver. However, we are currently unable to confirm which specific product you purchased. Westland offers a John Innes range of composts, as well as a multi-purpose compost with added John Innes, each designed for different gardening needs.

To clarify, mushrooms and toadstools are a natural part of the composting process. Our composts are made from carefully sourced organic materials and go through rigorous heat treatment during production, which eliminates fungal spores, pathogens, and weed seeds. However, compost is a living product, and fungal spores exist in the atmosphere in their billions. When conditions are right, such as warmth, moisture, and fresh organic matter, these spores can settle and thrive, resulting in visible mushrooms or toadstools. This is not harmful to plants or people and is actually a sign of active, nutrient-rich compost.

We understand this may be unexpected and even frustrating, especially if you’ve never encountered it before. We always aim to provide clear information and support, and we’re sorry this experience has led you to reconsider your choice of compost.

The speed and effectiveness of Resolva products can vary depending on the specific type used, as each contains different active ingredients designed for different types of weeds and conditions.

It’s also worth noting that applying the product multiple times in quick succession won’t speed up results or improve performance, and in some cases may reduce effectiveness.

Just to clarify, we don’t use spent mushroom compost in our mixes, and our production process involves high temperatures that destroy fungal spores, pathogens, and weed seeds. However, compost isn’t sterile, fungal spores are naturally present in the environment and can settle in compost once the bag is opened or if stored outside. Mushrooms are not harmful and are actually a sign of rich, active compost.

Our range includes both contact and systemic weedkillers, each working in different ways. Contact weedkillers target the visible parts of the weed and can provide short-term results, while systemic weedkillers travel through the plant to kill it from the roots up, offering longer-term control.

While our multi-purpose compost can be used indoors, it is primarily designed for outdoor use. Due to the natural organic matter it contains, it can sometimes attract fungus gnats, particularly in warm, indoor environments. For houseplants, we always recommend using a dedicated indoor potting mix, which is specially formulated to help prevent issues like this.

The mushrooms you’ve mentioned are naturally occurring in the air and tend to flourish in freshly laid compost, especially when kept moist. Anything that survives our high-temperature composting process will be saprophytic in nature, meaning it feeds on decaying organic matter rather than living plants. These are harmless to both plants and people. Removing the mushrooms as soon as their fruiting bodies appear is the most effective way to manage them.

We’d also be keen to learn more about the specific issues you experienced.
