Warning : Conflicting Instructions & Out-of-Pocket Losses

I am extremely disappointed with my 1st experience as a mystery shopper for Ipsos. I strongly advise potential shoppers to be cautious before committing any personal funds to their missions, as their internal communication is deeply flawed.

My first mission resulted in a total financial loss due to three major failures on Ipsos's part:

Direct Misinformation from Support: Before completing the task, I called the Ipsos hotline to confirm if purchasing stamps online was acceptable. The representative explicitly told me it was fine. I relied on this professional guidance, only to have my task rejected later.

Contradictory Written Guidelines: The rejection feedback stated that I must use "2nd Class UK stamps." However, the PDF instruction manual provided for the mission made no mention of 2nd class stamps whatsoever.

Total Lack of Accountability: There is a massive disconnect between the Mission Guidelines, the Support Team, and the Review Team. Each department provides different requirements. When you follow the advice of one, you are penalized by the other.

As a result, I am out of pocket for the postage costs more than 10 pound, fuel for a 21-mile round trip, and over an hour of my time, the stuff I sent as contribution. All because I followed the instructions given by their own staff.

It is unacceptable to expect shoppers to front costs when the company cannot provide consistent or accurate instructions. Until Ipsos takes responsibility for the errors made by their support team and aligns their PDF guidelines with their review criteria, I cannot recommend them. Shoppers, beware of spending your own money on these tasks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All tasks must be completed in line with the specific guidelines provided for that activity, as these are what our review team assess against. While our support team is there to help, their guidance is always intended to support the written instructions rather than replace them.

If there has been any lack of clarity between the guidelines and the information provided, we take this seriously and will review this internally to ensure consistency across teams.

In relation to task outcomes, approval and reimbursement are dependent on all required criteria being met. To ensure fairness for all shoppers, the same process is applied to every submission.

Each month, we process and pay out for thousands of completed tasks across the UK where the requirements have been followed as outlined.

Advice is not criticism.

Working as a freelance mystery shopper / CX Auditor Is rewarding both financially and emotionally. However, it is not a free ride and it requires accurate non biased assessment along with excellent recall and adherence to detail. Very useful non critical but informatve critiquing is used to enhance the auditors report. A must for anyone wishing to succeed and grow within this industry. I recommend IPSOS to anyone considering part time eork or a career.

First task as mystery shopper

I conducted my first ever task for Ipsos thinking I had fully read through their instructions however I missed one thing (there were a lot of instructions) and now my review and any associated expenses have been declined. I wrote to them saying it was my first ever task and I would know to do that next time but just got declined and not getting any money back. Really disappointed as I was looking forward to undertaking other tasks in the future for Ipsos. Now not sure I want to be out of pocket again..

ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING SERVICE.
I completed a task that took a solid hour of my time. My statement was submitted, accepted, and I was clearly told I would be paid on the 1st of December. I followed every instruction exactly as required. There were no issues, no questions, no problems raised.

Now, after all that, they have suddenly decided to claim my task was “declined.”
Let me be absolutely clear: it was not declined. This is a complete reversal of what I was told, with zero explanation and zero accountability.

This company has shown a total lack of honesty, consistency, and professionalism. They are unreliable, they do not communicate properly, and they clearly do not value people’s time or effort.

I have never experienced such careless and disrespectful treatment. If this is how they operate, then people need to be warned.

Do NOT use this company.
They waste your time, change their decisions without reason, and take no responsibility for their actions.

We can see from your time with us that you attempted a task that was for Greater London however you were attempting if from a completely different region. Unfortunately we are unable to accept tasks that are completed incorrectly or from the wrong region/wrong scenario. Explanations for failures are sent to your email.

Easy money

Personally the amazon ID tasks are a great way for me to fetch a couple quid weekly. Support is amazing and payments have always been done on time. Only reason giving it 4/5 and not 5/5 was I ever had 1 issue.

I submitted a task and was told my “pictures” for the survey were “digitally altered” attempted to retake new pictures and try to submit but wasn’t able too. Support couldnt help on this matter which was disappointing. Other than that 1 bad experience it has been great.

Control Freak Auditors

Dreadful experience. You need to jump through hoops to get the payment they promised you.

The give you unrealistic due dates i.e. email you at 10pm asking you to submit by 8:30am. They will even cancel the evaluation while you are working on it (get an error message saying it's invalidated).
Even if you receive any kind of reimbursement you feel like you ran a marathon to earn every dollar.
Their system is designed for those who might be unemployed to make some money but it would be easier to get a full time job.
A very painful experience dealing with idiots who request stupid things from your reviews like "take a photo of the inside of a plastic or paper bag". Leaving you to shake your head in frustration as to why they ask for such ridiculous requests or is it because they can.
Don't bother because they also love to cancel your jobs after you are out of pocket because you didn't take a photo of the inside of a plastic bag.......

VERY GOOD- No idea why so many negative reviews!

Hand on heart have no idea why all the reviews here are so negative. I have done over 50 mystery shops (amazon related), and always been paid within 2 weeks, and if there are any issues, they have been incredibly responsive and helpful. I have phoned up to rearrange tasks, and they have been very useful, and while the pay is not something you can make a living out of, some extra beer money in your 20s isn't bad!

Great way to have fun, learn new things and make some money

It's a really great way to have fun, learn some new things and make some additional money. There are a wide variety of different tasks, including meals out and other easy tasks. You get good briefing from the Ipsos team and quick responses to any queries. There is a pretty quick turnaround on reimbursements as well. You can pretty much do as little or as much as you want, when you want. A great thing to be part of.

They expect you to spend your own money on visits, then fail to reimburse you for various made-up reasons. Stay away from their scammy practices!

We can see from your time with us that you completed multiple successful tasks and the only time you task was declined was in 2021 when you unfortunately did not complete the task based on the clients requirements.

If possible would you be willing to elaborate further on the issues you had while with us in particular to the 'failure to reimburse' and 'various made up reasons'. That way we and other future users can understand further the issues that arose.

Awful, very bad communication

I’ve done mystery shops for numerous companies. Ishopforipsos are the worst one I’ve found so far. They have very badly written instructions and expect you to be a mind reader, then they blame you for it. They don’t seem to be willing to take any responsibility for the absolute mess their booking system is in. I’m appalled by the way they seem to blame anyone but themselves.

Will not pay what the owe

They will say on your profile that your pay is approved and shows green. Then they will decline the report and not pay you. How can a company shows your pay is going through then back track. It's just a con. Reported them to HMRC.

Not sure why the poor ratings

Have done loads of work for these guys, the allocators are helpful at sorting out work for me and always help if I have to change my plans or I’m I’m staying in a hotel in the middle of nowhere with dodgy WiFi.
Pros:
Allocators make sorting out visits easy (Amy,Adrian,Keiren,Tanya,Abbie, Carly).
Weekly Pay
Get to go and visit nice parts of the country.

Cons
Days can be long, but that’s by choice.
Can be repetitive if you do lots.
Get to go and visit places like Luton/Redcar/outskirts of Glasgow!

One month in and very positive so far

It has been easy to get started and earn some extra cash ... But more importantly to feel I can play a part in improving customer service and in particular the service offered to people with disabilities.
Pay has been fast, approval of completed tasks has been quick, no complaints from me so far. long may Ipsos mystery shopping continue to be tasked for these important activities here in the UK

Fantastic company to work for

Fantastic company to work for. I have been with Ipsos many years and have never had an issue with jobs being approved or payment. They are one of the fastest payers in the mystery shop world. Jobs they have on their system range from free food and drink to video shopping phone shops. Great rates of pay and helpful support staff. One of my favourite companies to work for. Keep it up Ipsos
