Having researched Backpacker insurance I called Outbacker today for a quote and to ask a long list of questions. Nicky was very helpful and well informed so I felt comfortable about taking out cover with this company. Hopefully I won't have to claim but should the need arise, I feel reassured that my cover is adequate and that help will be immediately available.

I would not recommend Outbacker to anyone.

Outbacker Insurance has attempted to dodge, duck, and dive almost every claim I have made. If they have paid, it has been after months of emails requesting documents they either don't need or already have. I paid for the premium insurance but they still tried to subtract excess from one of the claims.

I have lost a phone and had injury on my trip and they have refused to pay for either of these, despite clear evidence. They use cleverly worded policy documents which allow them to avoid payment.

I rarely write reviews but I feel that my experience with Outbacker deserves one. I had to claim for a medical emergency (cancer scare) whilst abroad earlier this year. The call handler was extremely empathetic to my situation and all further communication through calls and emails were helpful and made the whole experience a lot less stressful. My claim was handled quickly and efficiently without me having to chase for updates - in fact it was the other way round. I was also pleasantly surprised to be fully refunded for all medical costs incurred whilst abroad as well as my emergency flight home (minus excess). All in all I think it took about a month from first contact to the money being back in my account. I have never had to claim on insurance before and had low expectations but this company was fantastic and I can’t recommend enough.
