The best language immersion program for learning Chinese. Christina is an excellent teacher, and the entire platform is very conducive to learning mandarin.

Having lived in Beijing few years, and started HSK2 with Silk mandarin this semester. It has had helping me navigating communication better.

I've taken several online courses and I've absolutely love Silk Mandarin school. The technique they teach and the videos are all extremely helpful and the teacher was both engaging and encouraging.
My HSK2 teacher was easily accessible via the class chat, WhatsApp, and even WeChat and would answer questions really quickly even though we were in different time zones.

Highly recommend and signing up for the next series.

The first contact to silk mandarin was already great: the team is really going the extra mile to make sure they can meet your required starting date, learning times and find flexible solutions to make sure the course will fit into your life.
Also I really love the blended learning concept: sure you need to invest some time but if you are willing to do that you will have your first successes quickly. I have learned several languages in my life and never came across a better concept to learn one than here. Highly recommend!

Focusing on oral speaking practice as a primary objective really helped me a lot with gaining confidence and motivation to learn. Not putting so much pressure on character learning, but making it the secondary focus, helped me to progress faster. My teacher Christina made it comfortable for me to ask questions that increased my understanding, helping me to grasp the language faster and use it effectively.

Arriving in Shanghai in September 2023 I knew I wanted to learn mandarin, not only in order to facilitate communication in daily life, but also to gain access to Chinese culture in general, this as a sign of respect to the people of this country. For a certain number of reasons regular courses on one of the local universities did not work for me. By coincidence I found the address of SILK MANDARIN online and in some printed expat guide. After the initial contact it took only more or less one day to get in touch with all the relevant people at Silk in order to enrol for HSK1, very fast and very professional. The atmosphere is very friendly, the whole team does its best to make you feel at ease and being part of their "family". Teachers (at least those I know) are doing a really good job, questions are answered almost anytime of the day in almost no time, they are cool, competent and friendly but they are also demanding and insisting in order to get students out of their comfort zone, the only way to succeed with such a different language for westerners. Being in a blended learning course with pre-recorded elements I appreciate the good quality of the videos and the perfect intonations and pace of Jasmine, this is very important when learning a tone based language. I hope my mandarin journey will continue successfully over the next months and years.

At first I tried to learn Chinese by myself. I used video in YouTube, learning apps and etc. But I didn't feel the progress. Then, I found a video of Silk Mandarin School of Chinese and I fell in love with the way information was explained. After that I had a free lesson and I really enjoyed it. My teacher was excellent! I really like her being my tutor. From the very first lesson I got to know about things that I've never heard before. Slow motion technique, for instance. All these things together made me choose Sill Mandarin. Thank you for teaching us properly!

Good Mandarin school in Shanghai

I became aware of Silk Mandarin through the beautiful website and the personal contact was very encouraging. I was at school from April 15th to 26th. CoCo is really a very enthusiastic woman and offers every possible support. The lessons were based on the textbook, but always went beyond; The teacher always patiently answered all questions and problems, even if I was slow to understand something. The exchange about culture and its similarities and differences was also great. We particularly like the very good online teaching material, which is ideal for both preparation and follow-up. The videos using the so-called slow motion technique certainly make problems that we foreigners have when we subconsciously use our language structure in Chinese (and are therefore incorrect) very understandable and avoidable.

I've enjoyed my experience as a student with Silk Mandarin. They offer a lot of different course types, so there is a lot of choice depending on your learning style. Whether you prefer online, in-person, group classes, or private lessons. I really enjoyed the HSK 2 eight week intensive - it really propelled my learning. I'm now taking private lessons and they've been really flexible, which I appreciate as my schedule is so irregular!

Silk Mandarin is conveniently located in a modern tower in the Jing'an district of Shanghai. You can find many options in the area to have lunch after class and a Starbucks coffeeshop to boost you before class!
at Silk Mandarin, the groups sizes are always very small (6 students or less), which is ideal to make progress, participate and ask questions to the teacher. Each teacher has his/her own personality and specific way of teaching of course, but they're all friendly, hard workers and dedicated to their students. A good mix of grammar, vocabulary and conversational skills.

Prior to starting Silk Mandarin’s Blended Learning Course, my learning experience consisted of the hundreds of hours spent on a few of the popular language apps on my cellphone. When we moved overseas to China this past August, I learned quickly that this method is not going to be enough for me to carry out a relatable sentence, yet alone, a conversation with someone local.
I found out about Silk Mandarin through a Chinese New Year ad on social media. CoCo has been a pleasure to work with. She explains the program courses in detail, listens to your wants/needs, any concerns/feedback, & always follows-up. In just a couple of months, 3 hours per week, I’ve learned so much more and have a deeper understanding of the Chinese language & culture. This course has given me a strong foundation to build upon. I just completed the HSK 2 private 1:1 course with my teacher, Yanqin. She is amazing & well-spoken! She knows more about the English speech structure better than I do. Her teaching-style, patience, & humor makes learning Chinese fun. I always look forward to our classes, so-much-so, that I’ve enrolled in & will soon start our HSK 3 lessons.

The classes with teacher Qiying are very helpful, she is a great teacher and the school has great materials to learn and improve Chinese. Highly recommend it!

I signed up for HSK2 with Silk Mandarin after struggling on my own for 3 years trying to teach myself Mandarin. I was learning from apps and even took some other Chinese courses online. I was frustrated. I found Silk Mandarin, did a free trial-course, and really liked what I experienced. I’m glad I did. I love the small class sizes, world-class teachers, and the methodical, consistent, and rigorous curriculum and approach they use to teach you everything you need to know to advance. Though the HSK2 book was the basis of the course I took, it was so much more. My teacher, Qiying was stellar. She was patient, knew how to assess my abilities and improve them, and held me accountable for performance and homework. She went above and beyond what you’d expect in a language course and taught me about the language, not just the mechanics. You can’t help but learn with Silk Mandarin’s approach and the experienced teachers they have. I don’t think there’s any other way you can really learn a language after my experience with Silk Mandarin. I felt like I was back in College, and that was a good thing. As difficult as it is to learn Chinese, Qiying and Silk Mandarin made learning achievable, and for the first time in over 3 years, I finally felt like I was making progress. My teacher and Silk Mandarin gave me hope and helped me realize that I can achieve my goals and learn Chinese with their help and by doing the work. I had one other student in my class so there was no hiding - I had to participate, which made me learn. I also learned from my classmate. My two classes per week became the high point of my week. I was very pleased with the 90 minute classes, small class size, and the teaching points, but above all, the pure experience and teaching abilities of Qiying were world class. She was my guide on this HSK2 journey, and her patience, experience, knowledge, and desire that I learn made all the difference in the world. I don’t know anywhere else that a person can find this kind of instruction and experience to help them, and the price is very reasonable considering what you get for the money. A semester college class in the USA cost more and doesn’t give you the value that Silk Mandarin does. I’m so happy with my experience that I’ve already signed up for HSK3 at Silk Mandarin and intend to follow with HSK4 - HSK6. I don’t know how long it will take me to achieve my goals, but it doesn’t matter because I know I’ll be learning. I’m so impressed with my teacher, Qiying; she’s fluent in English, knew what I struggled with, assessed my abilities, and helped me advance. She is a first-class teacher. I have a lot of work to do to achieve my final goals in Chinese fluency, but I now know it can be done after taking HSK2 with Silk Mandarin. I love Silk Mandarin and my teacher and truly appreciate their help. For the first time since I’ve begun my Chinese learning journey, I finally feel like I’m making progress because of the help I’m getting from them. They are awesome! When I arrived in China last September I knew only a few words and was an absolute beginner. I had had a couple of lessons with a native speaker but was unable to express even the most basic of sentences in a supermarket, coffee shop or at the market.
Silk Mandarin's course has made a difference as it offers a solid grounding in the language which meant I was quickly able to make myself understood in short exchanges and build some confidence. The fact that their online resources are available for revising and reviewing at any time also means students can manage independent study with stimulating audio-visual materials. The most surprising element of these are the 'real-life' dialogue videos which give the learner insight into daily life and tendencies in Shanghai.
The school was recommended to me by a colleague who had tried other schools previously and had particularly enjoyed Silk Mandarin's approach to teaching the tones.
The 1-to-1 course I was offered with Qiying when I needed to change the timetable was highly satisfying as she's a splendid, thoughtful and stimulating teacher who's always available with support and helpful feedback.
Overall, I would recommend the school to those who are committed 100% to learning and want to improve quickly.

Choosing Silk Mandarin school to improve my Chinese speaking skills was the best decision I could make. When I started the classes I had not spoken the language in a long time and felt very insecure, but after just two lessons (of the ten) my fluency and confidence were already improving thanks to my wonderful teacher. Classes often turned into moments of laughing and sharing stories, which made me feel very comfortable and improved my 'everyday Chinese' skills. My experiences with the organization and the lessons have been nothing but amazing. They were super flexible adapting to my schedule as well as my current Chinese level and fully accomodated my expectations from the classes and personal goals. Would highly recommend!

After a couple of months of learning Chinese informally through social media, I enrolled in a course through Silk Mandarin in Suzhou. From the beginning, the staff at Silk Mandarin have been remarkably friendly, as well flexible and responsive to my needs and interests as a learner. My teacher, Sisi, is a skilled language instructor and it is clear that she has extensive experience working with non-native learners—she is able to anticipate common challenges for learners of Chinese and understands how to explain them in terms that make sense to learners. She is also adept at continuously incorporating previous course content into new lessons, which allows me to reinforce the various concepts we have learned. During class, I always feel engaged and appropriately challenged; as such, I’ve felt both my proficiency and my confidence improve throughout my course at Silk Mandarin. As all of the above suggests, I’d highly recommend Silk Mandarin to learners!

Prior to Silk Mandarin I had no knowledge of Mandarin, but I had strong desire to learn.

I came to Shanghai for work in the beginning of 2023, and since I planned to stay in China for a while (more than 3 years), then of course learning Mandarin was a necessity as one cannot rely on phone translators forever. My first experience was with another school, however they lacked enough structure for my taste and the lessons felt very disorganised and structureless. However, my work colleague told me of another school nearby that they and their friend have had great experience with: quicker learning, structured lessons, friendly staff - the full package.

Firstly, the pricing and flexibility of Silk Mandarin gave a very positive first impression and it made the cumbersome non-language-learning part of the process much easier: easy to pay, to plan classes, a lot of flexibility and guidance. Additionally, if I had an emergency or preoccupied with work, switching to an online lesson was incredibly easy, although I preferred offline classes overall.

Secondly, I finally felt an astronomical increase in my perception of the Chinese language and characters. Mainly, the structure and professionalism of the lessons ignited an actual desire to practice outside of class, either with downloading Pleco to practice han-zi, or using DuChinese to practice listening and comprehension. However you feel about "studying by the book", sometimes it is warranted, and the last thing you want in your language learning is a lack of structure. Although Silk Mandarin don't go strictly by the book, i.e. chapter by chapter, they are able to streamline and compress the HSK books into a digestible, easy-to-revise format.

Thirdly, the main methods of revising/homework/practice provided by Silk Mandarin (ClassIn) proved to be the most efficient and easy to use. My only other experience with a Chinese learning school was lacklustre as it only provided a web portal. Having an application like ClassIn on my android phone and Mac made it so much easier to practice on the train/car/office/etc. without the difficulties of websites that sometimes glitch out on the phone.

Lastly, the positive vibes are paramount to a good learning experience. I have difficulties balancing my work obligations with extracurricular activities, being it language learning or just going out, but the positive atmosphere and personal contact from the teaching staff made me *want* to learn to balance these things and actually improve my Mandarin. It's one thing to translate on your phone, but a whole other feeling to speak the language of the land you are a guest in and fully immerse yourself.

I plan to not only continue studying at Silk Mandarin, but hope to return the favour by speaking fluently and fully appreciating their country and culture. Would recommend whole-heartedly.

Yanqin is WONDERFUL! She is a well-prepared teacher and is patient. I always leave the lessons with really useful language to practice and to use. Excellent Mandarin class.
