Product was exactly as described shipping was fast

I have bought 2 bikes from Steel-Vintage Bikes. Communication, shipping, packing were all great. Bikes arrived in good time to the States and were well protected from shipping damage. When I discovered after the first bike that I owed a hefty Customs fee, I felt that that should have been more obvious somewhere on the website. I was expecting the fee on the second bike, so it was not a shock. But one should factor that in if bringing a bike into the United Stateds.
The first bike I bought, a Bianchi Campione del Mondo, had some irritating issues with the way it was set up/ built. All the cables were cut so short that I couldn’t reroute cable housings or even adjust anything; cables were cut practically at the cable anchor. In addition, the bars had clearly been newly wrapped, and the brake levers were not even close to being at the same height. I had planned to rewrap the bars anyway, but I had to unstring the brakes (see the comment about short cables) to reposition the brake levers so they were even on the bars. Most crucially, the rear wheel, which had clearly been built new for the bike, was unridable because of terrible undertensioning. I took the bike out for a ride and had to stop immediately because the wheel was squeaking terribly and the wheel was visibly flexing. In trying to bring it up to tension one of the spoke broke, so I have not been able to ride it. And this newly-built wheel was built with carbon steel spokes; I feel quite strongly that when working on a very high end vintage bike like this one should use better materials.
The second bike I purchased was a late 1960’s de Rosa Strada, again packed and shipped very well. However, there were a number of issues with the way the bike was set up:
-Both wheels were unridable because of undertensioning. I checked this before riding, after my experience with the Bianchi wheel, so I didn’t damage them by riding them as they arrived.
-Both wheels were built w/ 3 different sized nipples, which required me to keep changing spoke wrenches as I brought the wheels up to tension. Whoever built the wheel had apparently just grabbed random spoke nipples that did not match.
-These two apparently newly built wheels were again built with carbon steel spokes instead of stainless.
-The derailleur hanger had to have its threads chased; a great deal of swarf came out the back side. I could not install the derailleur w/o chasing; fortunately I had the right tap. This made me wonder how the bike had even been set up before.
-All 4 cables were again cut way too short; I could not reroute cable housings, which I felt it needed on the brakes because they were routed less than optimally.
-Crucially, the bottom bracket adjustable cup was not at all tight. I checked all the bearings, and this cup was too loose to ride safely.
-There was minimal grease in the bottom bracket. Grease was new and high quality, but there was not enough to smooth out the bearings.
-The front top tube cable housing guide machine screw was stripped and would not tighten, causing the cable housing to move around.
-The expanding-type handlebar plugs were not tightened and could/would have fallen out on the 1st ride.
-Irritatingly the screws for these handlebar plugs had been nipped off, making the nuts impossible to remove and making the screws too short to use. I had to buy new 3 mm machine screws to repair the plugs. Why would anyone make the screws unusable?
-There were no dust caps for the Campagnolo crankset, which I should have noticed in the photos of the bike before I bought it.
-Once again the brake levers were not evenly mounted on the bars. In addition, they were mounted way too low, despite marks on the bars showing where they’d been mounted before, which were higher and even.
-The bar tape, thin cotton, was not tightly wrapped or sticky; it began to move around as soon as I began riding the first time so that I could not grip the handlebars securely.
Steel-Vintage bikes has a wonderful selection of rare, beautiful, vintage bicycles. They pack them carefully and ship them efficiently. However, they are unconscionably lax about the work they do in setting up the bikes. You will need to be a good mechanic and prepared to go over the whole bike before you ride it.

My compliments to the SVB team for the superb service and assistance in sending this Legnano bicycle to the Southern Hemisphere. The machine was very carefully disassembled and boxed to ship the more than 16000 km to its destination in Canberra. Out of the box and assembled immediately on arrival.

The overall service provided by Steel Vintage Bikes is always first rate. Delivery and packaging is always timely and well done. I cannot fault Steel Vintage and have been a customer for a number of years.. Plan to get to Berlin hopefully in the near future, stop in for a some Kaffee und Kirchen and a bike geek mooch around the shop.
