I am really sorry but cats protection in St Helens has gone down hill. We have had three cats from them and checks were throughly done and staff amazing. Now they have given a cat with real specific needs to a 19 yr old girl who has never owned a cat . It now has an old fashioned collar with no safe release, plus eyes are very dirty. Tried speaking to owner said does not like his face touched and needs to go out. It is constantly at mine for food. Left out from 6.30-5.30 if not more with no way in. Spoke to cats protection told not to let my cats out keep all windows and doors shut, in this heat. And not to place any food down in my house for my animals utter ridiculas . I am having to carry the cat up the st in a tea towel to show him he does not live here and to avoid massive starching. I understand they need homes for cats but this is stupid

I adopted a cat nine and half years ago and I wanted to adopt another after that cat unfortunately died, leaving me heart broken. I am very disappointed in how cats protection Oxford and Newbury have treated me over adopting another cat, in my last house I lived with my last cat for 5 years, this house was on an A road, I moved 5 minutes away 4 years ago still on an A road. No danger came to my cat as it's not a majorly busy road and cats are clever. I was met with a solid no from Newbury because of where I live and Oxford cats protection just ignored me in the end, I'm disabled and I can't get up stairs easily if there are no rails, and they won't even bring them down in a carry case for me to meet them. Oxford cats protection said they won't even let me meet any cats because of this, a bit of discrimination going on against me being disabled it feels. Both places have stopped a cat coming to a lovely home. Seriously I can look after a cat, my last cat proved that and my last cat died from an illness not from where I live.

Absolutely abysmal. Seems like it’s a scam to get money for a ‘charity’ I’ve had a colony of cats in my garage since 2020. Have tried multiple times to get cats protection to help with TNR with no success. The amount of cats is now 15 + year after year they have kittens, and I’m unable to do anything without traps or assistance.

They claim to care about cats, but they care about the money raised than the wellbeing of cats.

I decided to hold off my review of my time volunteering at Cat's Protection because I was hoping that they would allow me to come back, but seeing as they won't let me back because of my mental health, here is my review. I was volunteering at the Scotland Centre and I loved volunteering there. I was there from Oct 2025 to March 2026. I had a small anxiety attack during March and because I went to a member of staff I trusted for help and then later wanted to say goodbye to because they were leaving and I wanted to say thank you for all the help they gave me while I was there my volunteer role was paused and then eventually stopped because I was given an ultimatum to do something I found uncomfortable and so instead of helping me they forced me to leave the role myself as I was becoming more stressed and they weren't listening to me. They didn't even want to meet and speak to me about it. They also ignored the advice of a professional mental health expert.

So, if I were you and are like me, and you suffer from mental health issues, I would hold off volunteering at Cat's Protection. The current volunteering team seem to have no idea how to handle people with mental health. They can't seem to grasp that we become more stressed when asked to do something we are uncomfortable with, like for example, being forced to have a support worker even though you don't need one and are capable of the work, and if you disagree with them, they will leave you with the choice of either agreeing with them or leaving the role, which is an awful way to treat someone. No middle ground. They won't even bother listening to you. No speaking with you to see how you feel. It's either their way or leave. And once you have left, you're not allowed to come back because they think we will either be an issue for the staff or they don't trust you with the cats. You get treated completely differently from everyone else. It's disgusting. It's a shame because the staff you work with are such nice and supportive people. It's just the volunteer team that let it all down. I'm better now but they still will not let me back and they come up with different reasons each time I ask.

I registered my rescue cat as soon as I adopted him thinking he would be safe if anything happened to me. Since then my cousin has said she will take him in but I wanted him still registered with CP in case my cousin was away at the time so they could not collect him immediately - thinking they would collect him and contact my cousin. Apparently they will not do that. Also I was told it could take 1-2 weeks to collect him so would want neighbours to feed him until then. They issue a key fob on registering - stating “ there is a cat at home waiting for me” - I presume in case of an accident so someone knows to contact CP. I now have no faith that my cat will be looked after by them. I will no longer make donations or leave a gift in my Will as I wanted peace of mind about my cat and they have definitely not given me that.

This review goes for the Hendon branch. I was advised by Harrow branch to contact Hendon about two cats that my neighbor abandoned in the flat without any food or water. RSPCA was there and supposed to take them, but a week later the cats are still there, abandoned, some of us still trying to feed them. I thought I contact this branch and ask what could be done. To my surprise I got a very rude reply. "Go back to the RSPCA something must have prevented them from coming back" I pointed out that the email came across as rude, basic manners like greetings are important. And the reply was; "This was not a rude reply and I cannot understand why you should say so
You obviously have no understanding of the current situation concerning cats and how overwhelmed all rescues are."

I exactly know. I myself was a foster and volunteer for years. I'm donating around £100-130 worth of foods and other items that's needed to Harrow branch. They've been nothing but lovely and I adopted my cat from them. I recognized their hard work and friendliness. That unfortunately did not apply to Hendon.

Got nothing to say other than, what an amazing experience! - not only that but being paired with kittens of our own, seeing them in person, and really shown how well they’re looked after there!

We were left knowing how to care for the kittens properly, the fact they’re already neutered, chipped and vaccined blew our mind, like I said previously goes to show how much cats protection really care about the welfare of their cats!

A big thank you to Joe, who has helped us in finding our two gorgeous babies! Wouldn’t recommend anywhere else!❤️

Three years after a newly adopted cat attacked my face, I have finally regained the confidence to be around cats again. It took a PTSD diagnosis and therapy to get to this point.
Before the cat attack, I was an ardent supporter of Cats Protection. I donated regularly and genuinely believed in the charity. Sadly, the way they handled my case changed that completely. Neither I nor my friends and family will support what now feels like a corporate machine rather than a compassionate charity.
After the attack, Cats Protection failed to properly respond to my formal complaint. I wrote directly to the CEO after 6 months and received no response or acknowledgement. The Charity Commission would not investigate an individual case, so I ended up asking my MP to intervene (the Charity Commission reports directly to Parliament). Only then did I receive a partial apology, 8 months after I made my formal complaint. It took the letter from my MP for them to respond.
If you are struggling with how Cats Protection is handling your complaint, involve your MP. I would also encourage people to support smaller local rescue charities, where donations are more directly used for animal care and community support.

Not very helpful when I tried to get help with neutering

I am genuinely angry after dealing with Cats Protection. I contacted them after rescuing three kittens from a dog attack. I explained the situation clearly, including the fact that I already had safe homes lined up for the kittens and that there are multiple stray pregnant cats in the area that urgently need catching.

Their response was honestly shocking. They told me they have known about this situation for two years and have only managed to rescue 12 cats in that time. Two years and that is all that has been done while the problem keeps getting worse.

Instead of actually focusing on the pregnant cats and stopping the situation from escalating, they were far more interested in taking the kittens off me so they could rehome them themselves. It felt like they were completely ignoring the bigger issue.

What made it worse was the way they spoke to me. I was treated like I had done something wrong for stepping in and saving kittens that had just been attacked by a dog. I was even made to feel like I had taken them from their mother, which is ridiculous given the circumstances. There was no appreciation at all, just attitude.

Then I was basically told I could go and catch the pregnant cats and deal with it myself. That is literally their job. Passing it onto someone who is just trying to help is unacceptable.

To top it off, they said they don’t have cat traps and would go out with cat carriers instead. Anyone with even basic knowledge knows you are not catching feral stray cats with a carrier. It just showed a complete lack of understanding or effort.

Overall this was a frustrating and disappointing experience. The lack of action, the poor attitude, and the refusal to deal with the actual problem is not what you expect from a charity that is supposed to protect cats.

My son witnessed a dog killing kittens on one of the traveller sites yesterday and now has four 4/5 week old kittens that he is struggling to keep alive and one still outside that he hasnt managed to catch yet. RSPCA are worse than useless and cats protection havent been much help either. He cant just put them in a box outside and hope that the mum comes back because of the danger of the dogs. It seems as though nobody will come out because they are scared of travellers.
Not good enough!

Adopted a 1 year old cat that had been removed from it's previous home. He arrived having had presumably no medical care with horrible diarrhea. We were then suddenly advised to return him to his previous owners. CPL have either caused 2 owners (us and previous owners) heartache by removing a cat unnecessarily, or returned a cat to a known abusive situation.

Absolute disgrace!!!

I ve reported many stray cats on near by where I live street in Walsall. People who live there told me, that they have reported these cats to CP long time ago, and they said they will come, but have done nothing so far. Cats are multiplying and nobody does nothing about it.
So, I ve reported these poor cats again to CP. Among pregnant females there was also disabled blind cat.
I volunteer sometimes for small rescue, and lady who run this rescue said, if CP doesn't do anything, she will help with neutering. I just managed to get blind cat(thank God!!!) and CP Walsall Lisa called me and started accusing me, that I am pretending to be from CP. And she had a problem, that I've reported these cats,how dare I, because I don't live on that street!!! I ve explained to her, that I volunteer for little rescue sometimes, but she was on and on.... Shouting :stop going and pretending you are from CP !!!🤣Seriously guys.
This woman is absolutely vile, delusional and mentally unstable,highly manipulative pathological liar. She has got her own narrative in a head and reality doesn't get through her. Even some vets rolling eyes when mentioning her calling her difficult.
She doesn't give a damn about these animals at all!! I ve told her I ve got blind cat, I took it of this street and guess what??? Not even question if cat is ok, if may need any help!
How on earth, you could of put such vile person in run of animal charity is beyond me.!!No concerns AT ALL for the poor blind kitty(But anyways, kitty is in good hands now).
They've said again, that they will come and neuter them in a week.Let's see...

Uptade after 2weeks....she still didn't came.

We recently adopted our beautiful Sally from Cats Protection, Chelwood Gate and can’t praise the centre and its staff highly enough. Within an hour of submitting our application, we received a phone call inviting us to meet Sally. Donna was amazing, talked us through the cat’s history, allowed plenty of time for play and cuddles and gave helpful tips on keeping her safe and happy. 3 days in and Sally (now Willow!) is very much part of our family. Lovey experience and clear the staff really care about the cats. Thank you

I adopted Lily a DSH 5 weeks ago and can’t praise the system enough. Everything from my introduction to her at the vet’s at handover to today. Nothing is too much trouble. They check to ensure you both are compatible as Lily is only 7 months old. Quite traumatic for one so young. She is a little madam but she’s mine. I contact CP regularly and update them with pictures of her progress. If there is any question’s I want answered they are there for me and Lily.

A wonderful charity doing all it can to protect cats.

My neighbour sadly passed away. She left behind her cat that meant the world to her. I rang cat protection and explained the circumstances. I told them once the keys were handed in the cat would be homeless. They asked if I could take the cat in. I told them I have 2 cats and 2 dogs of my own. This cat is used to being a only pet. They basically said there's nothing they can do. My experience with cats protection is they don't care. I'm disgusted and will never ring them or donate to them again.

I contacted the Southampton helpline last year about a stray cat who I was worried about in the harsh winter season, and had an eye infection (I couldn't take him in as I had a cat who does not like anyone in their space).
My multiple emails were ignored, so I rang them and their very 'helpful' volunteers talk you through a long, gruelling form and any time I tried to add an extra sentence, they'd say to stay 'on topic' and to add it in at the end of the conversation. ( they dont even listen properly).
So I did this very long form over the phone to someone who was robotically asking me tick box questions, to then be told the charity can't help this cat as you've been feeding him and he seems friendly, so he's not classed as a stray???? Then proceeded to say that because he has an eye infection, you have to call rspca.
No other concerns were heard i was shut down and sent on my merry way; they wanted to just hang the phone up. I wasted my time.
I then called rspca who were no help because an eye infection wasn't serious enough, and then they sent me back to useless cats protection.
So round and round they send you in to get some help for poor, defenceless cats.
Cats protection once again started with their robotic form without listening to me, then I said I've been redirected and been sent in endless circles, please just help this poor cat in the cold; they said they'd ring me back.... did they ring me back? Of course not! I neveer even got an ounce of help from this useless place.
The stray cat today was run over. I am shattered. If cats' protection provided any protection, this wouldn't have been the case.
Disgusting charity, waste of time, no one should trust them. For one of the biggest charitites improve your policies and training for volunteers? Get on the field, get out there and help the cats!!!!!!!!!

Joe was very knowledgeable and friendly throughout my visit, took time to answer my questions and help alleviate some concerns in relation to the Cats I've adopted. I really love the fact that it was done by appointment, meaning the cats were calm and relaxed, not overwhelmed by overstimulation and free to choose whether they wanted interaction or not. The appointment system is a definite improvement for the sake of the cats, staff who are trying to assist and for me as the adoptee. Excellent work team ☺️

I have just adopted a kitten from Chelwood Gate Cats Protection and I can honestly say the whole process has been absolutely amazing.
After meeting 2 prior kittens which weren’t quite right for us, Joe advised me to hold on for a kitten born at the centre. This was the best advise, she is now home & is content, playful & so affectionate. This is due to being raised by her mum & the caring & loving staff.
The whole process from start to end has been so good, friendly, helpful staff who obviously love their jobs & all the cats.
Even though I pestered Joe about news on a kitten he always replied quickly & nothing was too much trouble.
Thank you do much to all the staff, keep doing the amazing work, you are wonderful

I would highly recommend adopting from Cats Protection, Chelwood Gate 🐱🐱
