spent a lot of many for an unprofessional knife

Ordered a knife which cost 60 euros and paied to come with japan post after calculating my duties to Greece (30 euros).
They sent it with fedex even if I paied for japan post without letting me know or asking me first. When the knife arrived fedex asked me 100 euros duties so I denied. In so many emails they refuse its their mistake and when I asked about money back they said fedex got 60 euros for item back to japan so I will not get any money back. Watch out before buying from them and consider all those reviews. They are so unprofessional (I dont want to say worse things).Just watch out they dont care about customer and they dont have responsibilities at all.I will move by law.

I Bought a mioroshi deba knife from this website for $117
The item came in defective with a wavy blade, which made it useless and would be impossible to sharpen, as any deba knife should be layed flat onto a sharpening stone.
After sending multiple pictures, and explanations why this knife cant be used, the company keeps denying and saying that's normal for the products from them, and the item is not defective.
After requesting a refund they only return 40% of the money coming up with multiple different charges.
Would definitely not recommend buying from them

Zero stars if I could. I ordered a couple knives 5 days ago that totaled about $1,000. The following day I get an email stating one of the knives is no longer in stock... asking if I agree to a shorter version of the knife plus a $2 refund (yes, $2). This particular knife I need so I reply with a very upset email (since there is no other way to contact them) telling them I don't understand how they are out of stock on an item I ordered hours before... and specifically state they *leave me no choice* but to accept the shorter version that I don't want. 3 days later they finally reply apologizing for the "inconvenience" - I'm sorry, but charging me nearly USD $600+ for a knife in the size I don't want is MORE than an inconvenience.
Before receiving their reply it was easy enough to check their site several times a day to see if the knife was back in stock... then when going to bed I look on the site for the last time that day and the size of the knife I originally ordered was in stock again... a few mins later I received an "order shipped" email with the knife they substituted instead of the one I wanted! Literally.
A simpler way of stating it: I ordered a very specific knife I needed. The next day I received an email stating the knife I ordered was "now out of stock"... they offered a different knife. Since I would have been charged nearly $400 to cancel the order (they charge 30% to cancel even if nothing shipped- see below), I HAD no choice but to accept and replied telling them they left me no choice and how unhappy I was. 4-days later, the knife I originally ordered was listed back in stock and within minutes of seeing that I received an email that my order had shipped. Never received a reply to my email.
I will NEVER order from Hocho again.
It's important to know that there is absolutely NO PHONE NUMBER or any way to contact them except via email and it takes days for Hocho to respond... IF they respond.
Edit:
The knives were shipped, including the knife I didn't want... not the knife I originally ordered that was listed in stock the same day my order was shipped. I NEVER received a response to my email telling them not to send me the knife I didn't want.
I received the order so I sent an email telling them I received the order with the knife I didn't want and requested instructions on how to return since the website does not have any information on how to return. I finally received a response that said my email was "impolite and threatening"... huh?! Which, of course, it was not impolite OR threatening... unless telling them that if they continue to ignore my emails I will contact the FTC... which seemed to resonate with them as that got a response.
It gets better...
In order to return the knife I DID NOT WANT, I have to pay for shipping... fine... to be done with this debacle I'll pay the shipping and that's not unusual. BUT, what is unusual is they will also charge me 30% of the total amount to accept the return. So I will have to pay nearly USD $400 to return unopened, unused knives.
Here's the fine print buried in their site... and yes, if you cancel an order an hour after placing customers pay 10%... it goes up from there... from hocho-knife.com:
"[Cancellation Penalty]
- If you must cancel it, we regret to say that it is needed to accept to deduct the following percentage from what you paid, and we can refund the rest.
10% (from 1 hour after placing the order)
20% (from 24 hours after placing the order)
30% (from 48 hours after placing the order)
- In case that the parcel were returned to Japan because of your responsibility"
There is a TON of fine print that is not typical in my experience... including listing the same penalties if a customer decides to cancel an item that is backordered. So if a customer orders an item that is backordered and decides to cancel it before it ships, the customer pays a 10-30% penalty depending if it's 1 or 48 hours after ordered. These are NOT custom, made-to-order items.
There are A LOT of additional customer penalties that I won't list and I never would expect these days... so customers should be aware of so be aware and READ ALL THE POLICIES of Hocho Knife BEFORE submitting an order. It's easy to spend thousands of dollars for a few knives so be sure you are comfortable with the most customer unfriendly policies I can recall.
I have NEVER been a customer of any business online or in person that charges such amounts to cancel or return items. If they were selling custom, made-to-order items, I'd completely understand, but Hocho Knife sells standard retail consumer items.
So I've learned a very expensive and hard lesson ordering from Hocho Knife... which is a "front" for Japan.com (which I just learned). I will NEVER do business with Hocho Knife or any Japan.com related business again... ever and I will make sure I warn as many as I can with my own personal experience.

I ordered over a month ago and the Knife never arrived. Had to open a case with PayPal to get a refund which is taking forever! Very poor customer service - they do not care.

Ordered a "69 layer" yaxell - chef petty knife that is "handmade in japan". With labeling all over the packaging touting its japanese origin. What I received is a cheap, stamped, chinese knockoff, with fake laser etched damascus pattern that is nowhere near as dense as my 37 layer iseya. This pattern is clearly not caused by grinding away the edge. What they are doing is highly illegal and should be banned from selling anywhere. I bought my iseya from the same site but I think going forward I will never do business with them again. They are liars!

I bought a ko deba but it's wooden handle was craked. I ask them to solve the problme but they denied service and ignored this issue. They said I may fix with glue myself. Terrible costumer service ever. Don't buy anything here. There are many other resonable knife stores in Japan.

I bought a knife for about £70. They didn't ship it, gave me a fake tracking number and then didn't reply to my customer complaint (having to go through paypal now to get my money back) SCAM!!!!

People from UK and Europe!!!!!
Donât order any of the items from them.
They have hidden costs and lots of scam.
For example, I place a order for knife case. Came in good condition after maybe 2 months, however on Top of it after 3 months I have been charged for international item transaction what cost me extra 30£ (to UK)
On the really beginning I ignored letter because I thought itâs a mistake, because I paid for everything. However now I need to pay to control account over a 100£.
Donât order from it. In the kitchen where I work many people had same issues( hidden costs+scam) donât go for same trap as we did.
Shame

They suck.
They sold me a knife for $185 which I then saw on the "Cutlery & More" website for $116.
I wouldn't quibble if it was a little bit higher, but almost double? Why? It's exactly the same product.
I cancelled the day after I ordered and they charged me 20% for "cancellation fee" -- the knife hadn't even shipped yet so it wasn't a return or restocking fee, but just a line-on-the-invoice fee. That must be how they do it in Japan.
Even after screwing me out of 20% "Cutlery & More" is still cheaper. I learned my lesson!
Buy your knives right here in America where you might have some recourse. What are you going to do if it never arrives -- fly to Japan?
I have had similar experiences buying from China and Germany and Italy and UK -- once they have your money they feel like you are on the other side of the World and can do whatever they like. They're right. You really have no recourse. Even if it costs a little more it makes sense to buy it here -- if it's almost half price it's a no-brainer.
LOL! I wrote the review in November of 2020 and they responded in July of 2021. Great service!

I placed an order with Hocho Knife for a Sakai Takayuki Aogami Super Kurouchi Hammered WA Japanese Chef's Gyuto Knife and 2 whetstones. The knife was incorrectly shown on the website as in stock. Sales emailed me to say it was out of stock and not due in for a month, would I like to wait, take a smaller knife or cancel the order. After 3 days I realised there was no definite date I would receive the knife, so emailed to say I would accept their offer to cancel the order for a refund
At this point, they introduced me to their T&C's and used it to justify withhold 30% of my money?
Note the T&C's are not referenced during the buying process, there is no link dusting that process and you are not asked to tick a box saying you have read and accepted them.
These T&C's are illegal in the UK and many other countries, yet they advertise heavily in the UK and sell here....
After some digging, I discovered Hocho Knife are a Marketing division of Japan. com.... who are registered in HONG KONG
There are many reviews on trustpilot accusing Hocho Kinif of selling fake knives. There are a lot of fake Japanese knives made in China.
Do you really want to do business with a company that seems to take joy in penalising customers, pretends to be Japanese when in fact they are Chinese and have multiple accusations of selling fake knives and charge you a penalty after you ask for a refund for buying a knife they claim is in stock when is not?
Personally, I will never shop with Hocho Knife again.
PS: I placed a new order with Burrfection.com (US Based, much better laws). They had packed my order and had it picked up by Fedex in under 24 hours in Hong Kong! The company has a 5* rating on Trustpilot and I will certainly be buying from Mr Ryky Tran again.
I have also since placed an order with Cutlery & More in the US, again great service, but they don't ship internationally so have to wait for my friend to deliver from SF in July.
Both Burrfection and Cutlery and more are dramatically cheaper than Hocho for comparable knives by the same manufacturer, except you know a) you will receive them, and B) they are not fake.
Update
Having Read Hocho#s reply. You can see what scam artists they are. The sold a knife shown as in stock on their website. After the purchase they say it is not in stock and they don't know when it will be in stock, and when I cancel becuase they made the sale under false pretences they chared $70 becuase that is what is in the T&C's I was not shown and not asked to agree to during the sales process. You will not be able to find a manned office in US or Hong Kong in order to sue them. This is how they get away with what in many countries they sell into, would be criminal.

I bought a Iseya Series 1 knief in May 2020. It cut well in initially. But In Sept 2020 the handle guard split in 2. I emailed them with pics and a video as I figured they would have a warranty on the product no such luck. The knife was used once or twice a week and put back in the box so it was not due to heavy use mainly vegetables no meat so no chopping. I was disappointed that the company did not stand by the product although touting Japanese tradition on blade smithing. Its a shame as most products from Japan are well made. I was looking forward to starting a collection of Japanese knives but will have to look for a better manufacturer. The best part is they offered me $5 discount to buy glue to fix the knief. I would definitely stay clear of this product line.

Hocho-Knife ããã®åç
I was anxious after reading these trust pilot reviews as delivery took two weeks. The Seto Iseya knife when it arrived however exceeded my expectations and was 50%, yes 50%! less expensive that the same knife from U.K. on-line retailer. I would recommend the risk of buying direct from Japan for the saving.

My $233 order was lost. Fedex Confirmed they lost my order and advised I request a refund or exchange and use their email to evidence the loss.
I sent FedEX's email to Hocho and requested a refund. I received a $60 ''partial refund'' from Hocho. I emailed to confirm when I would receive the remaining refund; I later received an email stating the refund I received is he maximum amount available as this as the standard insurance value for Fedex goods. I was not made aware that the refund would be limited, if I had known, then clearly I would have requested the order to be replaced. I'm $173 out of pocket and Hocho won't answer my emails!!
AVOID

Hocho-Knife ããã®åç
The handle on this $689.45 knife started to split after a few days of use despite following explicit directions of washing and drying. After close inspection, the blade was not completely set into the handle. When I brought this manufacturing defect to the attention of Hocho-knife, their response was that the knife did not come with a life-time warrantee! Although they offered to possibly repair it, I would be responsible for the charge estimated to be $50 -$100 + repair fee. In addition I would be responsible for shipping charges back to Japan and then back to the USA. This is atrocious customer service. I will not buy another knife from this company and a recommend that others beware.

Hocho-Knife ããã®åç
Egregiously the most horrible customer service ever. Life lesson learnt. Don't get sucked in to the awesome looking pictures that have been edited. Also the cheap knifes are not from made by hand in japan. They're Chinese made and branded with jaoanese names! Be aware! I personally think it's a scam to a certain extent.

Hocho-Knife ããã®åç
I have bought from there twice. First time smooth albeit late. Second time was an absolute disaster. This site has the worst customer service I've ever seen. They only post good reviews and sieve the bad ones. They will literally ignore you if you have something to say and it is infuriating. If something goes wrong they have no intention of solving your issues. They just want your money. It is not worth the risk. The owner hides their identity for this precise reason. They scatter their business over multiple countries to make it difficult to report them. DO NOT use hocho-knife!
