Torn - 3-star mishap, 5-star guides.
I am a little torn is giving that rating. We completed 3 Walks of Italy tours with some good and some less than perfect experiences.
The 5-star experience
-Reservation easy online, with lots of details on where to start the tours.
-Experienced guides with lots of interesting historical facts. All three guides made these tours a must-do for anyone. I really enjoyed their stories.
The less-than-perfect
-One tour was a late tour and we ended up having to leave the park because it was closing. Maybe starting the tour 30m before would have been perfect with more time to explore.
-One was an early entry to Sistine Chapel with extra costs for 3. Unfortunately, King Charles decided to go at the same time. Not the tour operator’s fault. I convene. But, we couldn’t visit the Chapel and the Basilica after all. We lost lots of time in the crowd, just trying to get in, and to go wait in line to see the Chapel and the Basilica. We finally abdicated and left.
The guide did her best. Where I am a little frustrated is that the tour operator did not offer anything in compensation, nor in contacting us to offer an apology. We finally ended up going the next day to the Basilica by ourselves.
Just disappointed that the tour operator has no plan B for such a mishap. Offering us a tour in comp, or to join another group the next day would have been awesome.

However, I want to sincerely apologize for the frustrations you encountered. Regarding your visit to the Vatican, I am incredibly sorry for the disruption caused by the state visit. As noted on our website: 'Starting December 2024, access to St. Peter's Basilica may be limited due to the Vatican's Jubilee Year 2025, which includes special events and ceremonies. These closures are determined by the Vatican and are beyond our control.' Because the Vatican requires us to purchase tickets under specific names in advance, we are unfortunately unable to provide next-day changes to this tour. Additionally, as these circumstances are entirely outside of our control, we do not typically offer compensation for Vatican-mandated closures.
That said, you are a returning customer, the notice was unfortunately very close to your tour date and you also mentioned a tour that the timings did not quite go to plan.
We highly value your loyalty to Walks. While we couldn't change the circumstances that day, we would love to welcome you back. Please reach out to us at info@walks.org before your next purchase, highlighting your previous booking number, and we will be happy to offer you a discount for a future tour of your choosing.

We found the guides to be friendly…
We found the guides to be friendly professional people, that shared their passion and knowledge. We learned a lot and often it was presented in a unique personal way that was fun and made you want to learn more afterwards. I also felt more connected to the cities we visited from the tour guide’s talks… thank you.

Superior to most other of the guided…
Superior to most other of the guided tour options. Offered so much depth to our trip in the cities we visited. St Marks Basillica Venice and walking tour of Florence were stand out experiences.

Great guides, clunky experience flow, too many guests
Our guide for this tour was incredible, a longtime employee of the Vatican who was so intelligent, friendly and knowledgeable about the Vatican and Sistine Chapel. Unfortunately, the group size felt a little too large for it to feel like a truly intimate, exclusive experience. I would strongly encourage Walks of Italy to limit the number of people who join. It was difficult to hear the guides at times with two groups talking over each other. Everyone gets a chance to use a key to open a space in the Vatican which in theory is nice, but when there are 40 people, there is a lot of waiting around and of course everyone going it wants their photo and video taken in the action. I'd so much prefer less focus on key opening, and more focus on the artwork and history.

Vatican and Colosseum
I had tours of the vatican and the colosseum/forum (on separate days). The guides were friendly, experienced and very knowledgeable of the history of these sites.

Outstanding tour
It was an excellent tour of the vatican, sistine chapel, and basilica. Anna was an excellent guide. So knowledgeable! The meeting point was in front of a café near the vatican. There was someone there checking people in for various tours and time slots. Very well organized. 100% recommend it!

I did the Vatican early morning tour with Maddy and it was great! If you can only see one thing in Europe, let it be the Sistine Chapel.

The guide was especially knowledgeable about the site and informed the group of relevant historical facts. We took a self tour last time we were there and this was much better and more memorable . Highly recommended
