The ID.3 itself delivers exactly what I was looking for: a modern, reliable, and efficient electric vehicle. It’s smooth to drive, offers excellent range for everyday use, and the build quality is up to the high standards you’d expect from Volkswagen.

From the very start, we found Paul to be friendly, professional and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble and he was very knowledgeable and efficient.

I want to tell you about our journey. Not the literal journey as VERTU was less than 40 minutes away. More of a recap on a month long search for my daughter’s first car as well as why VERTU would have been a good place to start. I hope this review saves others a lot of time and petrol money.

So my daughter was 100% set on finding a decent used VW Polo within our combined budget and after passing her test, the hunt was on.
I had already scoured a number of Autotrader searches so it wasn’t long before we hit the road.

Now, to spare you a tonne of individual accounts, the theme was:
* Traders - Full of stories of how well they know the industry and “would never sell dangerous cars to our kids” (personally, such assurances had the opposite effect on my level of trust)
* Small Independents - “Trading for 35 years” etc. (albeit under different trading names in many cases). Many examples of fake reviews after digging around for background checks online. Many hidden costs, the favourite being almost worthless yet seemingly essential third party warranties.
* Car Supermarkets - Some shockingly bad stock after buying anything and everything from auction. Ranging from unreasonably expensive to unusually cheap (yet always for good reason). Virtually run by children, nearly always a mass production line for vulnerable, uneducated/time starved buyers.

So then we arrive at a couple of franchised dealership options, one of which is the white Polo we ended up purchasing from VERTU Volkswagen (Nottingham South).
This is the second ‘Approved Used’ car we have bought in the last couple of years (the other being my wife’s Mini) so I would first like to dispel some common misconceptions in regards to what you would expect and might hear when buying a 5-10 year old car from a dealership.
1. “They’re expensive” - They’re really not. If anything, I would say they’re more competitive on price and service than any other type of retailer in 2025. In addition to efficient comms, they bring a network of mechanical, body and wheel care specialists to the table to address even the smallest concerns before handover.
2. “They only care if you’re buying from new, taking out finance, extended warranties or other commission-based incentives” - Simply not true in my experience. Quite the contrary. What they really want is repeat business, which will only be found through quality service and being treated with the same amount of respect as any other customer.
3. They’ll justify poor condition through the old excuse “well, you have to expect a lot of wear and tear on a 10 year old car.”

I’m going to conclude with a summary of our customer experience at VERTU whilst addressing that last point.
- Called to arrange a viewing on a weekday evening. I must confess to not remembering the name of the lady who answered the phone but she was extremely welcoming and professional. We were offered the option to pay a deposit to hold the car but decided to take our chances. Absolutely no pushiness or scaremongering. Just a realistic laugh over a fairly low-risk scenario.
- Steve made a courtesy call to introduce himself and looked after everything around the viewing and sale thereafter. Bear in mind that upon first viewing, we arrived less than an hour away from closing time, yet not once did our visit feel rushed or pushy.
Absolutely lovely/genuine bloke who later proved successful in humouring and handling my mother-in-law (often asks for the moon on a stick whilst knowing she’s being daft)
- Luke handled some subsequent queries. We were even told when Steve was likely to be busy with other customers ahead of both visits (viewing and collection). Yes, there were the obligatory pitches to sell aftercare services and products but he didn’t take up any more of our time explaining these than necessary, or his employers would expect.

THE CAR WAS THE STAR
To use an old Motors Trade cliche, the first to view WOULD have bought this car without doubt.
Steve had had some enquiries. I’m just glad we were there early enough to snap this one up.
The car was a 2015 (65 plate) 1.2 litre Polo in white, and when Steve brought it round, I knew our search was over. Near perfect condition externally and even better inside than my car which is 5 years younger. Rarely have I seen a car of any age that’s been this well looked after. From the plastics and upholstery to the almost ring binder worthy paper records of its entire service history. Really quite a rare gem.

Needless to say, I would highly recommend VERTU (Nottingham South) to any prospective buyers and would like to thank the whole team for making this purchase such a memorable and pleasant experience for our hard-working and truly worthy daughter.

I’ve had 3 cars from these guys and my experience gets better each time. Megan was so genuine from the get go, I explained my budget and what I wanted and I had options right away. Although I have had to accept the fact my monthly’s would be more the team did their best to give me the best price and I ended up with my first brand new car. Megan is a credit to you.
