Excellent
Very pleased with my new Hotbin, I t took a while to get up to temperature, so I used the hot water container. I checked it the following day and the temperature was spot on. I can now compost all my kitchen waste along with my garden waste.
I’m glad I purchased it.

Impressive!
Just want to say how impressed I am with my Hotbin composter. I’ve had it coming up to 3 months, am getting about 100/150ml of liquid feed from it a day(!) if not more, plus I’m about to harvest my first batch of compost. Well worth the little amount of effort I think!

You'll struggle to get it working in the winter
I left a review for this product on 16 January and said I would update it once I had given it more time. It has now got up to temperature but it has taken a long time. It doesn't work for egg shells and even long grass, removed after no mow May, is not breaking down. The compost I have used took 6 months and where I put it, effectively as a mulch around new plants, was attracting flies. You can tell that I remain to be convinced, for example the wood chip I put in came out as wood chip. Removing the compost is also quite messy. There's no real alternative but to use your hands. The liquid constantly pours out and whilst I found a little china pot that fits under to collect it, it quickly fills and so if away it overflows. For all of these reasons I think the reviews are too uncritical given the price point. I was expecting more. I would certainly not recommend buying it in the winter as it took months to get it going.

In regard to eggshells, they are a natural source of calcium which although difficult to digest by bacteria in a cold compost heap, is susceptible to heat. This exposure to heat causes the shell to soften and weather resulting in it becoming brittle.
If adding eggshells into the HOTBIN it is recommended that they are crushed into smaller pieces and when exposed to temperatures of 40-60°c the heat will cause the pieces to become brittle. It is not uncommon when harvesting a batch of compost to see small bits of shell – brittle in nature these will soon break down releasing beneficial calcium into the soil.
Grass is great for a heat boost in the HOTBIN but as with any waste we recommend chopping it up to increases the surface area available to bacteria inside the bin which speeds up decomposition. It might be worth lightly chopping this up with some shears.
Your feedback suggests that your first harvest was 6 months after starting the bin – if so, this is your initial base layer and as such may need additional processing. This is perfectly normal, as this is the material used to generate the heat in the HOTBIN and so wont have been subjected to the same high temperatures as the material above. The base of the heap will always tend to be the coolest zone especially during the winter because cold air is drawn in through the base plate. The hottest and most active layers are the mid and top zones where breakdown and composting occurs the quickest. So even if the top layer is running at 60°C, the very bottom of the heap will be cooler.
Removing compost can be tricky sometimes depending on the contents – one trick to try is, as you are facing the material in the base, remove the central part of compost first ‘core’ and then remove the material on either side, one side at a time. Inevitably some material may fall down from above due to the weight.
Finally in regards to liquid, if you are experiencing a lot of liquid constantly coming from the HOTBIN it suggests that the contents are too wet – this could be due to the grass so we would recommend mixing in some paper and woody material to control moisture and help aerate the heap.

Foxes ate my Hotbins
I own and use 2 Hotbin Composters on my allotment. Foxes had chewed and destroyed the inner inserts on the top of both Hotbins in order to eat the red fireworms inside. I ordered 2 replacements from Hotbin. Delivery was swift. Both Hotbins are back up and running hot. This time I have placed old dustbin lids on top. So far, this has defeated the Foxes.

The hotbin is working like a dream
The hotbin is working like a dream. It has made an immediate difference to the waste disposal problems of an average family house in hot weather and produces rich compost and an even richer liquid manure which the vegetables love .

Easy ordering delivery and set up
Easy ordering delivery and set up. Seems to be working and has reached desired temperature several times but needs to be kept stoked to sustain the process. 4 weeks in and we have some liquid feed. The bin is some way away from filling up so I am planning more garden waste twice a week. Pleased with this purchase.

Waste of money
Purchased the HOTBIN Mega (700 ltr) after waiting months on end (following the instructions) the waste at the top never turned into compost. When I ask why the Hotbin never had a door or hatch to allow extraction from the bottom like the smaller models. I got told that you need to dismantle the whole box. I then asked what do you do with the material at the top as its not yet turned into compost. answer "You then skim off the top waste until you get to the lower layers that have composted. Put this to one side, then once you have removed the composted waste add this back into the bin to continue its cycle and continue to feed the bin as usual" what!!!
So you need 2 people also every time you want to get to the compost at the bottom, as you say its a 2 man build for this size of Hotbin (website and instruction)
I have been left with a very expensive lump of polystyrene that isn't fit for purpose!
Save your money!

We are sorry to learn that you are unhappy with your HOTBIN Mega. The HOTBIN Mega is a batch composting system designed to be filled with waste and then compost removed in around 3 months or when it suits your requirements. The timeframe can vary depending on the mix of waste and how well chopped up it is.
Like the other HOTBIN models, due to the composting process, there will likely always be some material in the upper part of the bin that isn’t as well broken down because the material has been composting for the least amount of time. The process for dealing with this material is the same for all HOTBIN units whereby it is removed and added back into the unit once all the usable compost has been removed to continue breaking down.
When removing the compost from the HOTBIN Mega, it is possible to just remove one wall rather than all of the walls but some find harvesting easier by removing all.
We hope that despite finding some un-composted material that you were able to make good use of the rest of the harvest.
