Wish I would have never bought it

I've had a horrible experience with the Japan Karup bed and the company itself. The item came defective and I decided to return it because of this and also seeing how extremely cheap it is for the price. I remember reading the reviews about how a few planks of wood should not cost $800; I bought it anyways since I liked the design and knew I'd never build something like this myself. After seeing it in person though it became so apparent that this company is a scam. I wont deny the nice designs, but they are making a KILLING from having you put together a few pieces of wood, which by the way the Japan bed requires you to drill nails into the frame without any holes which just seems like something they should be doing not me. I've been trying to return this bed for almost 2 weeks. I've been ping ponged back and forth between their US and Denmark teams. Finally, I was told I have to return the bed myself to UPS. This bed is HEAVY, I don't have a truck, and on their website it says they themselves pick up the bed frames. Dropping it off myself would cost over $200, on top of the $800 I spent. Ridiculous. I would highly advise you to not waste your money.

Ein Seitenteil und ein Fuß des Bettes schienen besonders gekrümmt/schief.
Das macht mir etwas Sorgen, auch wenn der Aufbau erst mal geklappt hat.

Für das Geld habe ich ehrlicherweise eine hochwertigere Verarbeitung erwartet.

Umso verständlicher ist es, dass Sie enttäuscht sind, wenn einzelne Holzteile beim Auspacken gekrümmt oder nicht sauber verarbeitet wirken. Gerade bei einem Produkt in dieser Preisklasse sollte der erste Eindruck stimmen.

Fik rigtig god betjening hos Pernille fra kundeservice. Jeg ringede ind til dem om en del af min seng der var gået i stykker. Efter meget få dage fik jeg allerede besked om jeg ville modtage delene der var gået i stykker.

Een jaar geleden een Karup root 160…

Een jaar geleden een Karup root 160 gekocht. Prachtig design en mooi bed. Helaas is de bed/bank in de praktijk een flinke afknapper.

- De hoes is niet afneembaar, de knopen zijn doorgestikt en de vulling is geperst, geen matras. Bijna niet schoon te maken
- Door het vouwen steken de knopen uit en breken ze makkelijk af
- Het hout wat is gebruikt is dun. De zijkanten breken makkelijk af, zeker als er een noest nabij de schroeven zit
- Ligcomfort: welke? Voor een volwassene niet te doen.

Al met al, mooie bank maar absoluut niet praktisch en als bed waardeloos.

Looks nice but don't buy it.

Not only are the Danes miserable at the Winter Olympics, they are also abysmal in terms of quality and even worse when it comes to customer service.

The product didn't even last 24 months.
The wood is of poor quality and looks cheap.
The customer service is useless and refuses to take any responsibility. If I didn't have enough to do, I would contact the EU consumer protection.

Bett-Zusammenbruch

Zusammenbruch.
Mein „Japan Bett“ hat nicht lang gehalten. Nach ziemlich genau einem Jahr brach der erste inner Bettfuß ab. Als ich dem Service-Team geschrieben hatte haben Sie mir lediglich den Tipp gegeben es erneut mit Holzkleber zu festigen. Jetzt ist die Mittelleiste komplett gestern durchgebrochen nach knapp über einem Jahr Nutzung als einzelne Person. Für den Preis gottlos.

vielen Dank, dass du deine Erfahrung mit uns teilst. Es tut uns leid zu hören, dass dein Japan Bed beschädigt ist und dass dies für Frustration gesorgt hat.

Das Japan Bed ist so konstruiert, dass Holzleim ein fester Bestandteil der Verbindungen ist. Daher ist es üblich, dass wir in einem ersten Schritt empfehlen, eine gelöste Verbindung erneut zu verleimen, da dies in vielen Fällen eine passende Lösung ist.

Nach etwa einem Jahr Nutzungsdauer ist es für uns jedoch schwierig, genau zu beurteilen, welche Faktoren letztlich zu dem Schaden geführt haben, da über die Zeit verschiedene Einflüsse eine Rolle spielen können.

Du bist herzlich eingeladen, dich direkt an unseren Kundenservice zu wenden, gerne mit deiner Bestellnummer und Fotos des Bettes. So können wir deinen Fall im Detail prüfen und individuell darauf eingehen.

I have retreat bed

I have retreat bed. I give it 2 stars because its really pretty...but otherwise design fail at its finest. Did you guys test this bed before launching? The headboard is a pretty nightmare. If its not against 100% straight wall it starts to wobble and creak and squeak at your every turn. Eventually screws come loose and it sqeaks if you move an arm. I am used of wooden beds and i am aware that they all squeak, but trust me...this is different. Its the deisgn. The headboard is a separate peace fixates on top of the frame with few screws and doesnt reach floor or has its own legs for support...So it really needs straight wall. Now i live in a 300 years old house. Walls are nit straight. Did i ever think it will be a problem? No. But this is why a company needs to test it at few different circumstances to see how it works. Especially at this price point....
Now for me...i will probably have to remove headboard. But you know...i bought it because of that. If i would want a frame and 4 legs i could get local carpenter to do it...

Your comments regarding the headboard construction and its dependence on a straight wall are both fair and clearly explained. Retreat is designed with a wall supported headboard solution, and while it is tested under standard conditions, we fully understand that homes are not always standard. Especially not historic houses with uneven walls. In situations like yours, this can unfortunately lead to movement, noise, and the issues you describe.

We agree that furniture should work well in real life settings, not just ideal ones. Your feedback highlights an important use case, and it is exactly this kind of input we use when reviewing and improving our designs and product information.

We are sorry that the solution you are now considering removes the very element that made you choose the bed in the first place. That is understandably disappointing. While we cannot change the construction after purchase, we would very much like to ensure that your experience and feedback are shared internally with our product and development teams.

Absolute disaster and outrageous excuses – Avoid at all costs!


​This company is arguably the worst furniture manufacturer on the market right now. My experience is identical to the other horror stories posted here.
​I ordered and paid for a bed on September 28th, 2025, and to this day, it hasn't arrived. What’s even worse is their constant gaslighting. Karup Design repeatedly claims that "they" don't have a problem and that the fault lies solely with the third-party retailers. This is a blatant lie and total arrogance. It is YOUR factory and YOUR product; therefore, it is YOUR responsibility.
​Twice I was told the bed had been dispatched, but it was never actually sent because the delivery was "rejected" at the source. It feels like this company is either a financial black hole or they aren't paying their staff, leading to strikes or a total halt in production. There is no other logical explanation for why an order from months ago still hasn't been fulfilled.
​To top it all off, looking at other reviews, even the lucky people who eventually receive their furniture after months of waiting often get it broken or in terrible condition.
​Save your money and your sanity—stay far away from Karup Design. They are unprofessional, dishonest, and clearly incapable of running a business. Matej Bloksa

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We are genuinely sorry to read about your situation and the frustration it has caused. This is not the experience we want anyone to associate with Karup.

In your case, the order was unfortunately not placed directly with us, but through one of our retailers. This means that the retailer is responsible for handling the order, payment, delivery, and the direct customer dialogue, and is therefore the correct party to resolve the matter and see it through to completion.

That said, we take your feedback seriously. Long waiting times, unclear communication, and lack of progress understandably create mistrust, regardless of where in the chain it occurs. The experience you describe is not acceptable, and we use reviews like yours to address issues with our retail partners and improve our collaboration.

We therefore recommend that you contact the retailer where the purchase was made directly, so they can review your order in detail and work towards a resolution. Should any technical clarification be needed from our side, we will of course support them.

Thank you for your honest feedback. It is important to us, even when it is critical.

I’ve never seen a service so bad

I’ve never seen a service so bad in my entire life. Truly unbelievable. I’ve also never written a review before, so this says a lot. I’ve ordered a bed in JULY! It arrived in November. And as the long wait wasn’t enough, the pieces were SOOOO badly packaged that they were all damaged. Even broken… then they sent new pieces and, of course, they only arrived today (January). Again, all damaged. Unacceptable. I don’t even have more words. I’m so tired of this situation and of writing emails. Never buying from them again and telling everyone how bad their service is.

We would like to clarify that your purchase was made with our retailer That Cool Living. As they are the seller, they are responsible for the order, delivery, replacements, and all customer communication related to your case. Unfortunately, this also means that we do not have a direct contractual relationship with you and are therefore unable to resolve the case independently.

That said, we want to be transparent that we have, on several occasions, tried to assist by reaching out to the retailer on your behalf in order to help move the situation forward. Ultimately, however, it is necessary for the dialogue and resolution to be handled directly between you and That Cool Living.

We fully agree that the situation you describe is unacceptable, and your feedback has been noted and shared internally, as we take issues related to packaging and product handling very seriously.

We sincerely hope that the retailer will bring this matter to a proper conclusion for you as soon as possible.

Livraison très longue, galère à monter

Délais de livraison très longs… Après plusieurs semaines d’attente, on nous confirme enfin une date. Mais le jour J, le transporteur annule la livraison en dernière minute pour un problème. Ils sont finalement passés la semaine suivante, plus tard que l’heure annoncée.
Nous n’avions pas été informés que le canapé (modèle Unwind) serait en kit. Énorme galère pour le monter… Beaucoup de pièces, des explications peu claires, bois abîmé. Le produit fini est sympa, mais loin de ce que nous avions imaginé et clairement pas au niveau du prix et du standing défendu par la marque.

We received a wrong bedside table - no reaction from the service desk

We received a wrong bedside table. Karup admitted their fault and told us they would solve the problem and give us a new delivery date. After more than 4 weeks - we had still not received a new delivery date. We then contacted the service desk again - and they are not replying to any mails. We have asked for a refund and have had no reaction neither. DO NOT buy here - they do not comply with normal and good business practice - and do not handle errors at all.

Three Years with the KARUP Roots 90: A Love Story Gone Beige

I bought the KARUP Roots 90 chair about three years ago, seduced by its minimalist charm and “design” promise. Fast forward to today, and the green fabric has gracefully faded into a soft yellow, not from sun exposure, but seemingly from sheer disappointment.
The cushions? Filled with what I can only describe as shredded moving blankets. Cozy, if you’re a cardboard box. Let’s just say: it’s a chair that dreams of being a bed, but never quite makes it.

Then there’s the zipper. Not YKK (because why use the industry standard when you can be edgy?) and sewn in *inside out*. A bold choice apperantly the goal was to make unzipping a philosophical exercise.

All in all, you could go to IKE* and get something similar if not sturdier for less, or spend a bit more and treat yourself to a chair that doesn’t slowly morph into a sad beanbag.

Nice idea, poor execution. Still, it did teach me patience and how not to judge a chair by its press photos.

Fast and efficient

Quick delivery, product simple to deploy and with a rather raisonnable confort level (for occasional use as bed). I didn’t hang it up yet (not sure I will do indeed)
