After years of struggling to try and understand the confusing world of leasehold policies and getting nowhere trying to get through to the local council and freehold owner of our property, we finally found Monarch Solicitors. They were the only solicitors we ever spoke to who actually understood what is required to purchase the freehold for a house (not flat). Leah Whitehead was the most competent solicitor we’ve ever worked with. She was a very good communicator and handled the purchase of our freehold in a way that took all the burdens off us and within a great time frame as well. The fees we paid were reasonable and we cannot be more happy that we are finally freeholders and Leah made the process so easy for us in the end. We didn’t have to keep chasing Leah for progress updates like is so often the case when dealing with legal processes. Warning: Please be extremely cautious before instructing Monarch Solicitors and particularly solicitor Ian Bowen.

In my experience, this firm does not act in the best interests of its clients. Instead of resolving matters efficiently, Ian Bowen repeatedly escalates cases unnecessarily, filing multiple civil claims — six different claims within just six months — when the issues could have been properly combined or addressed through one amended claim. Claims that should never have been brought in the first place.
The particulars of those claims were completely false, incorrect, and misleading.
They were not based on any real legal foundation but were issued purely to harass and pressure me. This conduct has the effect of significantly increasing legal costs for the client, often without proper justification or strategy.

On 11 March 2025, the Rent Repayment Order (RRO) Tribunal ruled against Monarch Solicitors and Ian Bowen, finding that their conduct was unreasonable. The tribunal supported my argument that the claims they issued were baseless, harassing, and should never have been brought. Despite this clear ruling, they continued to pursue repeated false claims against me, abusing the court system and increasing pressure on me.

Furthermore, Monarch Solicitors have demonstrated a disturbing lack of regard for vulnerable individuals, including those with disabilities. Despite having full knowledge of my medical conditions and vulnerability, they continued their aggressive and unreasonable conduct without any accommodations or sensitivity. This shows a total disregard for the obligations solicitors have towards fair treatment and non-discrimination.

This firm appears to operate with only one aim: to extract as much money from their clients as possible, regardless of the strength of the legal case. They intentionally create extra work — by filing unnecessary and duplicate claims — and then charge the client for the additional work they themselves caused. If you instruct them, please demand full transparency:
• Ask for a detailed breakdown of all actions taken,
• Ask why multiple claims were filed instead of combining them,
• Ask whether simpler, more cost-effective routes were considered.

Importantly, Monarch Solicitors are currently under investigation by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) for their conduct.
This official investigation reflects the serious concerns about their behaviour, their respect for professional obligations, and the way they treat clients and opponents alike.

Additionally, Trustpilot has issued warnings suggesting that many of the positive reviews about Monarch Solicitors may not be genuine. This raises serious questions about the firm’s credibility and honesty.

Please, if you are considering using Monarch Solicitors, or have already instructed them, proceed with extreme caution.
• Insist on seeing evidence of the work done,
• Question why certain actions were taken,
• Scrutinize every invoice carefully.

In my honest view, this firm appears to be motivated purely by profit. Monarch Solicitors prioritises increasing fees over achieving fair and efficient outcomes. I have never encountered a law firm behaving in this way. Protect yourself — be very, very careful.
